Global Awareness Society International 24th Annual Conference Program Freedom, Liberty, and Humanity in a World of Socio-Economic Disparity Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 21-24, 2015 The Hilton Inn at Penn Global Awareness Society International The Global Awareness Society International, Inc. is a non-profit organization composed of people and organizations of various backgrounds that recognize that the world is no longer made up of independent nations and cultures. This technological induced change affects everyone. We, as an organization, wish to explore the exciting potential that globalization of the world’s cultures and societies presents to each and every one of us as citizens of this planet. Established in 1991, our membership includes both academic and non-academic based professionals and individuals from various organizations and nations including the United States. Globalization has made possible what was once merely a vision: the peoples of our world united under the roof of one Global Village. Yet, despite increasing interdependence, human conflicts continue to blemish the landscape of our planet. We believe that a vital step toward achieving peace, harmony, and cooperation among the diverse peoples of our globe is to promote mutual understanding and appreciation for one another. Global Awareness Society International strives to turn a global vision into global reality. Purposes of the Global Awareness Society International To promote awareness of the diversity of cultures within our community. To enhance our understanding of the political, economic, social, demographic, technological, and environmental issues among members of the global community. To increase sensitivity to issues related to rapid globalization. To develop a mutual support network of scholars, professionals, interested people and organizations. To provide multiple forums for the exchange of research, knowledge, and expertise on people oriented issues related to globalization. To help people recognize the diversity and interdependence of the globe’s peoples and the process of globalization. To develop and expand the number of national or regional Global Awareness Societies under the direction of the G.A.S.I. to pursue our common goals. Proceedings The Proceedings of the 24th Annual Conference will be assembled and published online under the editorship of Dr. James Pomfret of Bloomsburg University. Guidelines for submitting papers are at the end of this program. Whether you are a student attending your first GASI meeting, or one of the founding members, your participation and contribution are invaluable to fulfilling the mission of our organization. This year’s conference theme “Freedom, Liberty, and Humanity in a World of SocioEconomic Disparity” represents the multidisciplinary academic pursuit to address many of the difficult global issues through the varying expertise and skill sets of our membership. The impact of globalization has reached every corner of the world and has touched the lives of billions of people. Access to life sustaining needs, health care, and education is now being viewed as a basic human right instead of a privilege. Despite these changing attitudes in our societies, there is still the harsh reality that the rapid globalization the world is experiencing is no cure for many populations enduring oppression, covert racism, marginalized political representation, and growing economic disparities. Societal ills are continuously unfolding worldwide. The citizens of the world have witnessed the alarming prevalence of the use of deadly force by police in the United States, the ongoing conflicts that diminish the opportunity for peace in the Middle East, the lack of interest in migrants’ welfare by many of the European Union’s governments, and the imbalanced trade and economic relations that first world powers maintain with small countries such as those in the Caribbean. These issues represent only a fraction of the problems that people are facing throughout the globe. It is important to note that the struggles of our brothers and sisters in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania are not overlooked. As GASI’s president, I am proud that many of these international and interpersonal concerns have been studied by our scholars and will be presented during the conference. I encourage all participants to pursue sessions outside of their respective academic disciplines and to engage in dialogue with researchers from other fields of study. Exposing ourselves to new topics and methods of investigating issues related to globalization is a hallmark of the GASI experience and represents one of our core values: “to promote awareness.” Geoffrey Palmer GASI President (2014–2016) 3 Conference Headquarters The Hilton Inn at Penn Registration, presentations, and all official conference activities will be based in the conference facilities at the Hilton Inn at Penn Presenters will have computers with Power Point and the MS Office Suite and computer projectors with screens available in each room. Brogan Chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Friday May 22nd 10:00 - 10:30AM Coffee Break St. Marks Foyer 6 24th Annual Global Awareness Society Chancellor Frank T. Brogan Keynote Speaker at the 24th Annual Conference of the Global Awareness Society International May 22, 2015 in Philadelphia at the Inn at Penn Mr. Frank T. Brogan became the fourth chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education on October 1, 2013. A lifelong educator, Mr. Brogan previously served as chancellor of the State University System of Florida, was president of Florida Atlantic University and was twice elected lieutenant governor of the state of Florida. As PASSHE’s chancellor, Mr. Brogan serves as the State System’s chief executive officer, which operates 14 comprehensive universities with a combined enrollment of nearly 115,000 students. The chancellor works with the Board of Governors to recommend and develop overall policies for the System. Mr. Brogan began his academic career as a teacher at Port Salerno Elementary School in Martin County, Fla. After working his way up through the Martin County School System—including serving six years as superintendent—he was elected Florida’s Commissioner of Education in 1995. As commissioner, he spearheaded passage of a law to strengthen criminal background checks for all educators and led the effort to establish the Bright Futures Scholarship Program. He continued his advocacy of education issues as lieutenant governor — steering education policy as legislative liaison for Governor Jeb Bush. Upon assuming the presidency of Florida Atlantic University in 2003, Mr. Brogan’s top priority was to elevate academic standards at the institution, which resulted in stricter admissions criteria, higher retention rates and improved time-to-degree. He also helped raise more than $120 million in private funds and matching grants for the university, while increasing its focus on research and establishing a four-year medical education program. Mr. Brogan was named chancellor of the State University System of Florida in 2009, and immediately went to work to successfully repair strained relationships between the System and the Florida Legislature. As chancellor, he led the development of a new strategic plan that includes 39 distinct benchmarks — an integral part of Florida’s nationally recognized accountability framework that tracks progress of university and system goals. Mr. Brogan also led the Florida system’s efforts to develop a performance funding program with goals similar to those of PASSHE’s nationally recognized model. The program utilizes key measures to reward universities for excellence and improved performance in areas that support both the institutions’ unique missions and system-wide goals for improved quality, accessibility and accountability. A native of Ohio, Mr. Brogan was the first member of his family to attend college, earning a bachelor's degree in education (magna cum laude) from the University of Cincinnati and a master's degree in education from Florida Atlantic University. He and his wife Courtney have a son, Colby John. 7 FRIDAY MAY 22nd Friday May 22nd 10:30 - 11:20AM Plenary Session University Presidents’ Panel The Relevance of Global and International Education in Difficult Financial Times Regent/ St. Marks Room Panel Moderator Peter Garland Executive Vice Chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Panelists: David Soltz, President of Bloomsburg University Marsha G.
