Every Hero Has A Story: Youth Summer
Reading Club
June 13 – August 22
Children ages 5-12 are invited to be part of our Every Hero Has a Story
Summer Reading Program. Babies and toddlers ages 0-4 are invited to join our Rubber
Ducky Read to Me Program. All registration and record keeping for these programs will be
done online. For more information stop at the Youth desk or go to orionlibrary.org/youth/.
Why should your child participate in summer reading at the library? Research shows that
children who continue reading through the summer maintain progress made during the school
year. The number of books read during the summer is consistently related to academic gains.
Children who read six or more books over the summer gained more in reading achievement than
children who did not. Plus, it’s fun!

From the Director
I am very pleased to report that our lobby
and youth area renovations are completed,
and I am grateful to all of you for your
patience as we worked through these
projects. We heard from all of you during
our 2013 strategic planning process that our
space needed to be updated and that selfservice options needed to be added, and we
prioritized these projects in 2014. We worked
hard with a designer to create updated
spaces that better meets the needs of our
community. We are pleased with the results
of our renovation, and we have heard from many of you that you are as well.
In fact, I wanted to share with you an important statistic. Since we launched
our self-checkout systems in December 2014, we have been watching to see
what the usage of these systems is. In December, about 33% of our checkouts
were done on the self-checkout systems. In January, that number increased
to 40%, and in February, we were just over 50%. This tells us that the selfcheckout systems have received a great amount of usage in the first few
months, and we are thrilled that patrons are finding them so helpful!
We also know that many patrons prefer to checkout items with a staff
member, and we still have many staff members available to assist you with
any of your library needs. Please do not hesitate to talk with any of our staff
members for assistance or if you have any concerns. We are here for you.
Spring and summer are my favorite seasons, and we have many things
happening at the library to celebrate! First, on Saturday, May 16 from
7:00p-10:00p, the Friends of the Library will be having their Passport
to Spring fundraising event, Mexico: an evening of colors, flavors, and
traditions! Do not miss this opportunity for a fun evening at the library
with food, drinks, entertainment, and information about Mexico. Tickets
are available now online and at the library. Then, on Saturday, June 13 from
11:00a-2:00p, we will kick off our Summer Reading program with family fun
at the library. You can enjoy a wide variety of activities and sign up for our
Summer Reading program, which has opportunities for all ages throughout
the summer! We look forward to seeing you and your family at the library
very soon!

Mexican Fiesta Time!
The Friends of the Library, in
collaboration with the group
Mexicans en Michigan, invite you
to join us for Passport to Spring:
Mexico, an evening of colors, flavors and traditions, from 7:00p-10:00p
on Saturday, May 16 at the Orion Township Public Library (library will
close at 2:00p). Experience a festive and magical evening as our library is
transformed into five of the most traditional and colorful states of Mexico.
Original paintings by Carmen Fernandez,
Andrea Ballina and Veronica Diaz will be on
display during the Fiesta. When you arrive
in Mexico City (the library lobby), you will
receive a complimentary drink ticket for one
margarita or other alcoholic Mexican beverage.
All food and non-alcoholic drinks are included
in the price of your admission ticket, and
additional alcoholic drinks may be purchased.
Then, prepare to enjoy a live mariachi band,
traditional Mexican folk dancers in costume,
authentic Mexican food and drinks, and
vendors selling traditional Mexican items. Stroll through the five different
states of Mexico, and don’t forget to purchase tickets for the wonderful
raffle prizes. Winners will be announced that night. Because alcohol will
be served, this event is for adults only. Suggested dress for the evening
is casual or Mexican attire. All proceeds from this event will be used for
library services, programs, projects, and resources not provided for by the
general library budget. Tickets are $35 each, or $40 at the door if still available.
Tickets can be purchased at the library circulation desk or online at:
orionlibrary.org/friends. Enjoy an evening out while helping to support
your library!

All Books Half Off
Bag Day – Fill a grocery bag
provided by the Friends for $5
(There are carts next to the Friends Gently Used Book
Store in the lobby to accept book donations any time the
library is open.)
If you are interested in helping with the book sale please
contact the Friends at 248.693.3000 x350 or at otpl.friends@
gmail.com. We need volunteers for sorting and moving books
before and after the sales as well as volunteers to work during
the sale.
Used Book Store
Don’t forget to stop by and browse our new and
expanded Gently Used Book Store in the lobby of
the library. The shelves are restocked several
times each week with popular titles,
including children’s books.
Auction basket contents are themed around, and include, a book. Look for
baskets featuring summer fun and Independence Day themes at this basket
auction.
Kroger
Another way to help the library through the Friends is to register for the
rewards program through Kroger. It’s very easy to register, just go to
kroger.com/communityrewards and click on the “register” link on the
home page to create an account, then follow the online instructions. If you
have a Kroger Plus card, you will need that number. If not, one will be
issued to you. Then, every time you shop at Kroger using your card, you
will be helping the library. The Friends receive a check quarterly from
Kroger with a percentage of sales.
A Sign of Friendship
The logo of the Friends of the Orion Township Public
Library is used throughout the newsletter to denote
programs that are fully or partially supported with
funding from the Friends.
