A Little Bit of S Email: [email protected] Web Site: www.oslcpearfish.com nshine April 2015 . So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (2 Cor 5:17) This may sound rather odd, but the truth is, I’ve never been a really big fan of spring. As a season, spring would appear to have much to commend it: warmer weather, more sunshine, longer days, grays and browns becoming green, etc. However, there’s a flip side to all of that: incessant wind, roller-coaster weather that tempts you with summer only to throw you back into winter the next day. And then there’s the aroma wafting up from the yard of thawing dog crud (a testament to my own lack of fastidiousness when it comes to cleaning up after the hound. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again: if not for my wife and her regular attempts at kennel cleaning, I’d be getting letters from the EPA). Turkey season’s not quite here, the deer and the pheasants are safe for at least six months, and I still have the Christmas lights to get off the house. Spring can indeed be a cruel season. I myself am a product of spring. Hence, every Springtime I’m reminded of the fact that I’m another year older if not necessarily any wiser. It’s interesting how what used to be, in childhood, an occasion for excitement and celebration becomes in adulthood pretty much just another day on the calendar, a day to avoid looking in a mirror for fear of what might stare back at you! I suppose we often dread our birthdays because they stand there as an unrelenting reminder of our mortality, of how our youth so quickly passes, bringing us one more year closer to our own “passing away.” Boy, could I be more depressing? But there is an antidote to this melancholy. Each year, on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox, we Christians become new again. We fill this church and we proclaim the very strange mystery of love’s victory over death. We sit under an empty cross and sing hymns of resurrection, Jesus’ resurrection and our own! And we confess that this new life is not simply waiting for us after we’ve exhausted this one. If indeed we are who we say we are (who God says we are)... if we belong to Jesus, then we are new today. We are no longer the same. We are more than aging bodies and thinning hair and expanding waistlines! What we were has already passed away! It’s dead. So why should we be afraid of life’s changes any more? We are free to live unafraid! And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; {4} he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Rev. 21:3-5 God is busy making all things new. Springtime is certainly a testament to that. Easter is the proof of it! Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! A Little Bit of Sonshine 2 Our Savior's Lutheran Church Council Minutes Trea$urer’s Report By Wendy Soulek As of March 23, 2015 March 10, 2015 6:30pm Submitted by Pam Englund, Council Secretary The March meeting of Our Savior’s Council was held in the church conference room on Tuesday, March 10. All twelve members of Council along with Pastor Stephan and Laura Campbell were in attendance. A few members shared news from the past month which was then followed by opening devotions led by Pastor Stephan who shared scriptures from John. The agenda for the evening’s meeting was approved as were the minutes from the February Council meeting. Treasurer, Wendy Soulek, reviewed the finance report which showed we are about $2000 ahead of where we were this time last year with offerings about $1350 over budget. She then recommended, on behalf of the Finance Committee, that some of our budgeted Mission Support obligations be paid before the end of the year. The group voted to approve paying our Bear Butte Contribution in full as a lump sum payment and Mission Partners’ commitments be paid out monthly. Pastor Stephan and Laura both gave brief reports on their activities over the past month and upcoming events in the church. Both commented on how well the Wednesday evening meal and worship are going. Laura invited Council to attend the New Members dinner Thursday, April 23. New members will be welcomed at both worship services Sunday, April 26. Also on that Sunday, members of Our Savior’s will participate in the Adopt-a-Highway clean up program, led by Holly and Jim Van’t Land. The Property Committee updated the group on the water line break which happened earlier in the month. They also reported a crack in one of the stained glass panels in the sanctuary. Worship and Arts Committee used money from Memorial Funds to purchase new communion chalices. The Nominating Committee has received responses from some of their candidates to fill Council vacancies. These candidates will be presented to the congregation at the annual meeting of the congregation in April. Wendy Soulek led the group in closing devotions. The March meeting then closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Council will meet again Tuesday, April 14. Women’s Retreat at Outlaw Ranch: April 17-19, 2015 “Rubber Band Emotions” Face it ladies - God, in His infinite wisdom, created us with a whole slew of emotions that are often tangled together like a wad of rubber bands. We will get together and try to untangle these emotions, name them and claim them as part of who we are and then turn them over to God and God's unending grace. With help from Patsy Clairmont and her book “I Second That Emotion,” we will spend the weekend laughing, reflecting, rejoicing, and recognizing that we are in this business of a turbulent emotional life together. Our session leader for the retreat is Pastor Deb Grismer from Hot Springs, South Dakota. Pastor Deb, Brownie (the dog) and her rubber band wad of emotions moved to Hot Springs last fall to join her husband and begin a new adventure in her life as an unemployed, empty nester.
