Cen ral Wellington Sacred Heart Parish, Thorndon 4th Sunday of Easter Pastoral Area Otari Parish St Mary of the Angels Parish, CBD Volume 4 Issue 3 26 April 2015 On Reflection D ear Parishioners, It’s worth asking ourselves why Anzac day has come to resonate so strongly for us as a nation. Why the battle of Gallipoli and not the others? One of the less obvious reasons, behind the selfless heroism and sacrifice of the day, was the the sheer scale of the human cost of the 1st world war as a whole. As the first “technological” war, the sheer number of casualties involved, its destructiveness and depravity of conditions, meant barely a person or country involved was unaffected. The “cost” of this war cut across the social and cultural boundaries of the day and affected everyone in an unprecedented way. There was a deep human need to remember this cost and honour those who had fallen. As a consequence of this deep desire to remember those fallen, Sir Fabian Ware founded the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in 1917. Its purpose was to mark and maintain the graves of the members of the forces of the Commonwealth who were killed, to build memorials to those who had no known grave and to keep records and registers, including, after the Second World War, a record of the Civilian War Dead. In large part, it is due to the creation and maintenance of these visible reminders of those fallen that the human cost of war was kept tangible. By recognizing the wider human cost of war, Anzac Day does not glorify war, but recalls something much deeper about the underlying spirit of humanity. Its desires and dreams to live its potential, and the precarious nature of the conditions needed to see it flourish. From a perspective of faith, humanity left to its own resources, without the graced presence of God, is doomed to repeat its mistakes. The consequent wars between these times and our own would seem to serve as a reminder to this truth…lest we forget. God Bless, Fr.
