Pre-spot and Degreaser, diluted at 1:15 (1 part concentrate plus 15 parts water) and brush lightly. Pre-spotting and brushing greatly enhances the effectiveness of the cleaner and reduces the time needed to remove the stains later in the process. 4 INSPECT AND PRE-CLEAN 3M™ Automotive Reconditioning Guide INSPECT & PRE-CLEAN Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner to the wheels. Use the following steps to achieve maximum performance: 3. ApplyStep3M™1: Determine which concentration to use based on experience. - Use a 1:2 dilution for lightly soiled wheels (1 part concentrate plus 2 parts water) - Use 100% concentrate for heavily soiled wheels (undiluted). Step 2: Spray 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner onto a DRY wheel. Pre-rinsing the wheel dilutes the product, reducing its effectiveness. DO NOT use 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner on glass, engines, anodized wheels and/or wheels with no coating or with coating cracked or in poor condition. Glass that is stained by the 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner can not be repaired and will need to be replaced. Note: 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner does not contain hydrofluoric or other strong acids. 4. Apply 3M™ All Purpose Cleaner and Degreaser, diluted at 1:15 (1 part concentrate plus 15 parts water), to the engine and engine compartment (lightly), tires, wheels, wheel wells, rocker panels, door and trunk jams, etc. Let stand for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse or wipe down engine and engine compartment surfaces with towel. Note: 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner works best on brake dust, while 3M™ All Purpose Cleaner and Degreaser works best on other soils. For best results, use both products on wheels. 5 HEAVY CLEANING 3M™ Automotive Reconditioning Guide HEAVY CLEANING tires, wheels, and other heavily soiled areas as necessary. A medium stiffness bristled brush works best on 1. Polishing Step WET • Removes defects such as deep scratches, dust nibs or excessive orange peel • Dry sand with Dual Action Sander, foam interface pad recommended for contours OR wet sand by hand Caution: Sanding through clear coat will require repainting • Follow with Scratch Refinement Step and/or Compounding Step 2. Scratch Refinement Step • Damp sand with 3M™ Trizact™ disc on Dual Action Sander • Use foam interface pad for contours • Produces Semi-polished finish • Follow with Compounding Step 3. Compounding Step • Removes imperfections, such as car wash scratches, medium to coarse scratches, medium oxidation and stains • Use wool pad for faster and more aggressive cutting • Use foam pad for slower and finer cutting • Follow with Polishing Step 17 • Removes swirls, fine scratches and very mild stains • For Dark Colors use finer polish and finer foam pads • For Lighter Colors use more aggressive polish and foam pads • Note: Swirls and imperfections remaining after this step will reoccur after waxing step products wash or wear off • Follow with Waxing Step 5. Waxing Step • Waxing fills swirls, very minor scratches and imperfections by leaving a thin layer of wax protection • Wax does little to further refine paint after the polishing step. After wax is washed or worn away, the imperfections remaining after polishing will reappear • Apply a thin even coat • Apply by hand on a damp pad • Apply with a Dual Action Sander using: 05729 3M™ Perfect-it™ Foam Polishing D/A Pad - 6 in. 05739 3M™ Perfect-it™ Hookit II Foam D/A Glazing Pad 05732 3M™ Perfect-it™ Hookit™ II DA Foam Application Pad - 6 in. While polishing and waxing a vehicle, you may have noticed that some fine scratches became less visible or even disappeared, only to reappear after the vehicle has been washed a few times. By using the correct system of products and procedures, many small paint defects can be removed and will not reappear when the polish and wax are washed and worn away. To remove a defect from the paint surface, you must remove the very thin layer of paint that contains the defect by spending enough time with a compound or polish. By removing this thin layer of paint, you actually remove the defect. See Illustration 1. Some scratches, acid rain pits, or other more severe defects may not be able to be removed completely. If a defect goes too deep into the clear coat, sanding to the bottom of the defect may result in inadequate clear coat thickness, or may even require a repaint. See Illustration 2. Generally speaking, if you can feel a scratch with your fingernail, you should not attempt to remove it completely. However, even without sanding, many deep scratches or other more severe defects that are compounded, polished and waxed will be less noticeable. 3M™ Perfect-It™ Foam Pad CORRECT 3M™ Perfect-It™ Foam Pad INCORRECT 3M™ Superbuff™ Buffing Pad CORRECT 3M™ Superbuff™ Buffing Pad INCORRECT 3M™ Perfect-It™ Foam Pads Instructions for Use: Recommended speed — 1500 to 2000 R.P.M. Do not exceed 3000 R.P.M. Use only with 3M™ Hookit™ SBS™ Backup Pad, PN 05717 or a 3M™ Perfect-It™ Backup Pad, PN 05718. To Install: 1. Center the compound pad on the backup pad. 2. Press firmly and twist to insure good contact with backup pad. IMPORTANT: Use caution around trim or moldings to avoid snagging or tearing the pad. Keep the pad flat, or nearly flat, on surface being compounded. To minimize the possibility of burning, reduce pressure over sharp convex/concave areas such as detail lines, fenders, etc. and keep surface wet with compound. 3M Foam Pad Care and Cleaning Instructions: If pad becomes clogged, remove and install a clean pad. Clean clogged pad as follows: 1. Rinse in warm (up to 115˚F) water. 2. Set wet pad face up on a flat surface and allow to dry. IMPORTANT: Rinse under water faucet. Do not use soap or cleaning solvents. Do not machine wash or dry. Do not clean pads with a buffing spur or screwdriver. 3M™ Superbuff™ III Buffing Pad (double-sided wool pad) CAUTION: 3M™ Superbuff™ III Buffing Pad can spin off air-driven polishers due to tool’s rapid stop. To avoid spin off, firmly tighten buff onto adapter. Use 7/8 in. wrench to hold adapter while tightening buff. Buffing Pad Care and Cleaning Instructions: Periodically rake pad with buffing spur or air nozzle to remove excess rubbing compound or glaze. If pad becomes clogged, remove, turn over, reinstall and continue buffing, allowing used side to dry. Washing pad causes shrinkage of wool fibers. If washing is desired, use only cool (60–80˚F) water. Do not use hot water, strong detergents or solvents. Use washing machines with gentle agitation only. Machine drying is not recommended. 18 BUFFING DO’S AND DON’TS Hiding vs. Removing Paint Defects PAINT REPAIR PROCEDURE Paint Condition Sanding & Scratch Refinement Diagnosis New or Like New Virtually no imperfections Swirls and Very Fine Scratches Scratches / Swirls / Imperfections Visible only in sunlight Heavy Swirls Fine Scratches Mild Stains Light Oxidation Imperfections that can be seen in shade or fluorescent lighting, but appear as swirls in sunlight. There are two keyholes at the top of the plate and a slot hole near the bottom, left side. CAUTION Eye hazard. Flying particles and dust. Wear safety glasses with side shields when drilling or hammering. 4. Drill holes for screws. - Use a 5/16” drill bit to make holes for the 3 wall anchors. You may need to use a masonry drill bit for some types of wall. 5. Insert wall anchors. - Hammer the anchors flush to the wall. 6. Insert top two screws - Screw in the top two screws, but leave the heads out about 1/4” from the wall. - Do not install the third screw yet. 7. Secure the backplate to the wall - Do not over tighten the screws. - Place the console backplate on the wall. The keyholes at the top should fit over the two screw heads in the wall and slip down into the keyhole notches. - Install the bottom screw and then tighten all three screws. 8. Attach the water supply. - Thread the end of a standard garden hose to the connector on the right side of the control console (as you face the unit). - Note: The cap on the connector on the left side (as you face the unit) should normally remain in place. IMPORTANT Inspect to be sure the tubes are attached securely. The tube for supplying glass cleaner concentrate to the diluter is a special tube and must be used for the glass cleaner concentrate. Do not switch tubes. 9. Snap the front cover into place. - Press in on the two side tabs while pushing the cover on until it snaps into place. 10. Arrange concentrate containers below diluter so hoses are neatly arranged. - Each supply tube has a label on it to identify the concentrate product it supplies. - Insert each concentrate supply tube into its correct concentrate container and fasten the lid. 23 DILUTER USAGE IMPORTANT Make sure the supply tubes are inserted into their correct concentrate product containers. Using the Diluter Dispense Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner: - Place a correctly labeled detailing spray bottle onto the corresponding product tube coming out the bottom of the diluter console. - Press and hold correct button until bottle is filled. Dispense Glass Cleaner or All Purpose Cleaner & Degreaser: - Place a correctly labeled detailing spray bottle onto the corresponding product tube coming out the bottom of the diluter console. - Press and hold correct button until bottle is filled. Dispense Car Wash Soap: - The long tube on the right bottom of the console is for dispensing soap into a bucket on the floor. Place the end of the tube in a bucket. - Press and hold the right button, labeled Car Wash Soap, until you’ve dispensed the amount you want. The chart above shows the dilution ratios of water to various 3M detailing products. The eductor, labeled at the top, can be brown, grey, or yellow. The eductor is the part in the assembly that the hoses attach to. Find your eductor color and look below it to find the product you are using. In the column below your product, you will see various dilution ratios. Find your ratio and follow it left to determine which dilution tip color you will use. Example: Brown eductor with a black dilution tip has a dilution ratio of 1:2 of 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner to water. Depending on your hose fitting size you may have a snap tip or a threaded tip. If you are using a threaded dilution tip, it is important that you screw hand tight plus a 1/4 turn. If you are using a snap dilution tip, fully insert it into the barbed fitting (be sure not to squeeze the tip). **Requires 3M™ Diluter Conversion Kit for Glass Cleaner (PD111) (Shopware 1-800-877-9344) 24 DILUTER USAGE 3M™ Detailing Product Diluter TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE PROBLEM: SOLUTION: Excessive foam in 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner (when filling, bottle is more than 1/2 full of foam) Tighten the fitting where the 3M™ Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner suction hose meets the diluter 3M™ Car Wash Soap not sudsy enough Replace yellow orifice tip with brown, orange or green orifice tip No siphon on select product(s) Ensure all fittings are very tight and secure.
