Director’s Corner
The long-awaited summer season is upon us. It’s time
to prepare for the hot weather which is ahead. Make sure
your fans and air conditioners are in proper operating
condition. Don’t be caught short and have the lengthy hot
weather arrive and not be ready. Check that all of your
windows open properly and screens are in good shape.
Good ventilation is important in the warm weather.
Thanks to all who helped with our Take-Out Spaghetti Dinner and
Spring Breakfast fundraisers. We made a little money and had a good time.
We could not do these things without all of you.
See the info below regarding our Hoagie Sale on Thursday, June 26th.
Orders need to be in by Friday, June 19th. Call the Center to order your
hoagie. Thanks for supporting our fundraisers!! The Jennersville YMCA
Senior Leadership team will again assemble the hoagies.
I want to thank a few individuals for devoting their time and energy to
your Center by serving on the Participants’ Council. Alice Buckley, Laura
McKinney and Elsie Gehron are finishing three-year terms on the Council.
Floss Duvall and Grant Troop are finishing one-year terms as Alternates.
The Council makes recommendations on activities and helps with
fundraisers. Their help is invaluable. Please thank them when you see
them.

“INDEPENDENCE Day Picnic”
As a summer fundraiser, we are having a
“Hoagie Sale”
On Friday, June 26, 2015
Hoagies must be ordered ahead of time so we know
how many to prepare. They can be picked up
between 11AM and 2PM. Orders need to be in by
Friday, June 19th
Large Ham or Turkey hoagies are available.
You can see any Participants’ Council Member, Staff
or Board member or just call the Center to order your
hoagie.
WEATHER PERMITTING, Our
Independence Day Picnic will be held in the Oxford
Memorial Park on Thursday, July 2, 2015.
Fun and games start at 10 AM. We will have
coffee & refreshments, cards, shuffleboard and
scrabble.
12:45 pm - Luken’s German Band will entertain us
If by chance we have inclement weather, we will
be at the CENTER.

INFORMATION & REFERRAL
Spring! It’s that time of year. Seems everyone is preparing for something
- graduation, weddings, sports events and trips. Be sure to use sun screen when outside
for long periods of time, as well as drinking plenty of water. Just learned that one of the
causes of depression is dehydration. Preventive action is far better than treating sun burn
and dehydration after the fact!!
People are asking a lot of questions regarding the Health Reform Law. The new law
addresses Medicare in a number of ways. Many effective dates of parts of the bill are still
yet to be determined. Dates that are definite are: Sept. 30, 2015 you’ll receive your
Annual Notice of Change & Evidence of Coverage documents from your Part D Plan.
Beginning Oct. 15. 2015 until Dec. 7, 2015 you’ll be able to add, drop or switch Part D
Plans. After Dec. 7th you’re locked in to your plan for all of 2016. The plan becomes
effective Jan. 1, 2016. Even with all the warnings last year, some didn’t check their plans
and are stuck with bad plans this year. Don’t delay this year!! A great plan one year can
be the worst plan the next year!! Plan ahead!
If you or someone you know is turning 65 in the next several months, now is the time
to start planning your Medicare coverage. Even if you plan to work for a while, some
company plans will not cover you if you’re eligible for Medicare. Medicare eligibility is age
65, no matter when you begin drawing Social Security. You will automatically receive your
Medicare card before your 65th birthday only if you are currently receiving Social Security
benefits, you just need to decide how you need to be covered. Clarification of your
coverage with you or your spouse’s employer is the first step in the process. I’ll be glad to
answer any of your questions concerning this - just don’t wait too long, there are periods
of guaranteed coverage and eligibility. Don’t miss yours!
Medicare 101 classes are scheduled to be held here at the Center during the day on
Monday, June 22nd and Monday, October 12th at 12:45pm and evening classes on
Wednesday, August 12th and Monday, September 14th at 7:00pm. We’re offering day and
evening classes to accommodate those still working. This is the time to get prepared for
the changes you and/or your friends will experience turning 65. We will address signing
up for Medicare and the various options available for prescription, medical & hospital
insurance coverage. Mark the dates now and tell your friends. Call for an appointment
anytime you have questions.

shows income limits for this year. Take
advantage of this offering.

pleased to introduce Refer Web, an Information and
Referral web-based application. Simply visit their website at www.chesco.org/human. Once on the site, locate

Senior Center membership is not required for those 60 and older to participate in the lunch program. Chester County residents 60 and older
are invited to attend their local Senior Center to enjoy a noon time meal. There is no cost for the meal but you must reserve your meal two
days in advance of meal service. A voluntary confidential contribution of $2.00 is appreciated toward the cost of the meal but is not required.

State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania, 1 (800) 732-0999. Registration does not imply endorsement.

Since the June newsletter is the final
edition of our fiscal year, it seems only
proper to thank all of you who so
diligently share your time with us.
The Center staff spends much time planning and
scheduling all of the various activities that we provide to
the senior community. However, without the many hours
that the volunteers spend assisting us, these activities
would not be successful.
So, from all of us to all of our dedicated
volunteers,
The Annual Meeting of the Oxford Area Senior
Center Board of Directors will be held on Tuesday,
June 16, 2015 at 3PM in the lunchroom of the senior
center.
The Nominating Committee will present a slate of nominees
who will be elected to the Center Board of Directors.
The Nominating Committee will also present a slate of
officers including President, Vice President Recording Secretary,
Treasurer and Corresponding Secretary to be elected to one-year
terms on the Board of Directors expiring on June 30, 2016.

We sadly announce that after a
very brief illness, our Hostess
Lynn McGhee passed away on
Tuesday May 5th. She is survived
by five very loving daughters, ten
grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. A Memorial
LYNN McGHEE Service was held at the Oxford
Nazarene Church on Saturday May
9th honoring her life as a mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and dear friend. Lynn joined the Senior
Center staff on November 21, 2011 and brought her
smile and tremendous personality to work for 3 1/2
years. She will be missed and certainly not forgotten
by all whose lives she touched. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to her entire family.
With great sadness we

Strohmaier passed away on
Wednesday April 29th at
her home after a battle with
cancer. Her five children,
six grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren will
deeply miss her. Alice was
a fixture at the Senior

Center from May 1991
thru June 2010 where she was the bookkeeper for all
twenty years. After retirement she returned to the
Center to volunteer at our many food fundraisers. She
was always willing to help in any way she could. She
too will be missed but certainly not forgotten Our
thoughts and prayers go out to the Strohmaier family.

LEARNING CENTER - The Oxford Area Senior
Center is a Learning Center. Check your newsletter for
information on activities, workshops and informative
programs. Also check online at www.oxfordseniors.org.
We are always open to suggestions. Please use our
suggestion box.
PARKING - You are able to park on the streets of
Locust, Hodgson and Maryland. If space is limited, we
have permission to park in the Nazarene Church parking
lot as long as there is no activity happening there. They
are located just one block away.
COATS/SWEATERS - In recent months we have
accumulate many coats and sweaters left here by
attendees. Any of these items that are not claimed after
one month will be used as Bingo Prizes. If you are
donating items to us, please check with Sally to make
sure she needs the items for Bingo. We cannot use them
for any other purpose. If Sally does not need the items,
please donate them to Neighborhood Services or
Goodwill. Thank you.

attorney available to senior residents of Chester County on the
2nd Wednesday of every month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
This service is free to senior residents of Chester County.

Healthways’ Silver Sneakers Fitness
Program is a comprehensive older-adults
physical activities program that addresses the needs of the 60 +
year old population. Muscular Strength & Range of Movement
is the core class of this Program and the focus of this creative
multi-level conditioning exercise class. Senior Center
membership is not required for individuals 60 and older to
participate in the Silver Sneakers class.

This class will be a basic introduction to the night sky. No telescopes or equipment will be needed. We will talk about and
identify planets, stars and a few surprises in the night sky. Everyone has heard of constellations and we will talk about some
of them and their history. The class will go on rain or shine.
Computer simulations, like you see in a planetarium, will be
used indoors if the weather is bad.
Some of the things we will discuss:
1. How can you tell if you are seeing a star or a planet
2. What is a star anyway? How many are there? How far
away are they?
3. What is our sun? How far away is it? What makes it hot
and bright? How much fuel does it have left?
4. What is Orion’s belt?
5. How do I find the North Star?
6. What is the brightest star in the sky?
7. What is a black hole?
8. How fast does light travel through space?
9. What do you mean you are sure I have never seen the little dipper?
10. Is the Big Dipper a constellation?
11. What is the Milky Way
We are sure there will be many other questions as well.

We have structured computer classes on a variety of subjects from the Basic course that covers a
little bit of everything to specific topics. These classes are 4 week and 12 week long courses. In addition, we
offer a time for you to stop in several times each month to just get answers on specific issues such as what is
Facebook, how do I send an email, how can I print out driving directions to my friends house, etc. Come to
any of the Q&A sessions and Colleen can help you. Do you have problems understanding your cell phone,
smart phone or tablets (iPad, Kindle, Nexus, Samsung, Google , Microsoft Surface)? Then come to one of the
Technology Help Open Sessions and learn how to use your device.

PRINTER INK CARTRIDGE RECYLCING PROGRAM
The Oxford Area Senior Center has a Staples Rewards Card which entitles us to receive monies for every ink cartridge we recycle.
We are allowed to recycle 20 cartridges per month and we receive $2 for every cartridge. This means we can earn up to $40 per
month to use towards our purchases of office supplies. Help your center today by bringing us your ink cartridges for recycling.
