This year’s Pan-American Research Day (PARD) is not
to be missed. This exciting event is scheduled to take
place on Saturday, May 2, 2015, from 12:30 – 6:00 pm
at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver,
Colorado. This event is sponsored through a generous

present their ARVO accepted abstracts at this year’s
meeting.
There will be two keynote lectures:
 J. Bronwyn Bateman, MD (USA) – The
ophthalmologist in the modern world of
genetics
 Alfredo A. Sadun MD PhD (USA) – How a
Giant Brazilian Pedigree Helped Solve 3 Great
Mysteries in LHON
A total of four travel awards and three research awards
sponsored by industry leaders and private foundations
will be awarded this year.
Afterwards speakers and attendees can relax and discuss
the business of the day at the wind-up cocktail party,
which is immediately to follow.

Dr. Bronwyn Bateman is a board-certified
ophthalmologist who specializes in pediatric
ophthalmology; she is also board-certified in clinical
genetics. She attended the University of California,
Berkeley for her undergraduate degree and moved on
to the Columbia University College of Physicians and
Surgeons for medical school. She did a residency in
ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at
UCLA and became a Professor of Ophthalmology and
Pediatrics. She went to the University of Colorado
School of Medicine in 1995 as Professor of
Ophthalmology and Pediatrics, and Chair of
Ophthalmology, the first woman in any department.
Her research has been in the genetic bases of
hereditary cataracts. She became the first woman
President of the Association of University Professors
of Ophthalmology. She has been President of the PanAmerican Association of Ophthalmology and is a
member of the American Ophthalmological Society.
She raised over $12 million to build the Rocky
Mountain Lions Eye Institute and establish an
endowed Chair. She is currently a Clinical Professor of
Ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of
Medicine, UCLA. Dr. Bateman has had a long-term
interest in Nicaragua and serves as the Honorary
Consul to the state of Colorado.
Dr. Sadun graduated from MIT (1972) and after
obtaining his Ph.D. and M.D., completed his residency
in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School followed
by a fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology. He joined
the full-time faculty at Harvard, Department of
Ophthalmology in 1983. He was recruited to
USC/Doheny where he remained for 30 years. He
helped lead Doheny in its transition to UCLA in 2014.
His research has centered on the clinical,
psychophysical and laboratory studies of diseases of
the optic nerve. In the 1980’s, Dr. Sadun was one of the
first to apply a new tract-tracing technique in order to
establish nine anatomical pathways between the eye
and the brain. He was the first to describe a human
retinal projection to the hypothalamus that subserves
the visual entrainment of the circadian rhythm. Dr.
Sadun was the first to identify an optic neuropathy
associated with Alzheimer’s disease. In 1993, he was
selected and sponsored by the United Nations to lead
an investigative team to determine the cause of an
epidemic of optic neuropathy in Cuba. He is author of
about 300 peer-reviewed publications (H-index: 47).
