The Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission
(AUC) in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in
Ethiopia

African Union Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Old Building Plenary Hall
Objective:
The objective of the commemoration is to continuously awaken greater
awareness of the African peoples and the international community about
the value of life and humanity and help to renew the collective
commitment to protect and uphold the fundamental human rights.
Participants:
Expected participants to this important event will include:
Representatives of the Republic of Rwanda, the Federal Republic of
Ethiopia, AUC, AU Organs, Members of the AU Permanent
Representatives Committee (PRC), Diplomatic Corps, Regional and
International Organizations, Human Rights Institutions, civil society
organizations, academia, youths, the Rwanda Community in Ethiopia and
invited guests.
Background:
The Commemoration of the Rwanda Genocide is an annual event of
the African Union held following the Decision to commemorate 7 April as
a day of remembrance of the victims of the genocide and reaffirmation of
Africa’s resolve to present and fight genocide on the Continent. It is also
in accordance with the objectives and principles of the African Union on
the promotion of good governance, human rights, rule of law and ending
impunity as enshrined in its Constitutive Act.
The event will be organised jointly by the African Union and the
Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda.
