African Union deploys 43 observers to monitor the 25th April
presidential election in the Togolese Republic
Lomé, Togo, 23rd April 2015: The
African Union Election Observation
Mission (AUEOM) deployed 43
observers to monitor the 25th
Presidential
elections
in
the
Togolese Republic after a two day
training session which took place
from 21 to 22 of April 2015 in Lomé.
The training session aimed to
provide observers from across Africa
tools and guidelines to understand the political context in Togo and the
African Union methodology necessary to ensure a fruitful, professional and
independent observation. It is with that perspective that the observers were
briefed on a range of topics including the legal framework governing
presidential elections in Togo, the African Union observation methodology,
the media coverage of the electoral process, a briefing session on the
political program from the different candidates, among others.
The briefing session was conducted by the African Union Observation
Mission (AUEOM) with the collaboration of experts from the Electoral
Institute for Sustainable democracy in Africa (EISA) and other national
stakeholders involved in the electoral process including the Ministry of
Home Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Independent
Electoral Commission (CENI), the institution in charge of Media regulation
and representatives from civil society and media organizations.
In the same vein, the African Union Electoral Mission attended a briefing
session for international observers organized by the Government and the
Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) and met with key stakeholders
involved in the electoral process, especially the High Authority for the
Regulation of media in Togo, Medias and the Independent National
Electoral Commission. The AUEOM Head of Mission, H.E Kabiné Komara

took advantage of this opportunity to reiterate the commitment of the
African Union to a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
H.E Kabiné Komara, addressing the observers at the end of the training
session, stressed on the critical role they have to play for a credible
election that will improve living conditions of people living in Togo as well
as Africans living across the Continent.
The 16 teams of the African Union Election Observatory Mission were
deployed in the all 5 administrative regions of Togo, namely Maritime,
Plateaux, Centrale, Savanes, Kara. It should be noted that some the
observers were deployed on the 22nd of April to monitor the early voting of
the soldiers.
