People started Earth Day to increase public awareness of environmental issues. It began in the United
States on April 22, 1970 when U.S. Senator Gaylord A.
Nelson suggested that a day of environmental education
be
held
on
college
campuses.
Lawyer\environmentalist Denis Hays, a recent graduate
of Stanford University, led hundreds of college students
and teachers in organizing the observance of Earth Day.
The same year Congress created the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, and passed the Clean Air Act of
1970. That law limited the amount of air pollution that
cars, utilities, and industries could release into the air.
Tips To Help: Recycle, pick up trash,
save energy, pick up after pets, do not
burn trash, start a compost bin, save
gas, turn off your computer, use both
sides of your paper!
SPRING....AROUND
THE WORLD
These pictures were taken at the Barnyard Carnival,, an event where the 4th grade students from Paoli, Springs Valley, and Orleans went to learn about farming, animals, and
science. The photos show what happens when pollution gets into the water. There areat
least 5 differences in the two photos.

Spring is the season of blooming and new life. Many
cultures have festivals to celebrate the arrival of spring.
It’s the season after winter and before summer. In the
Northern Hemisphere,(North America, Europe) spring
starts in late March and lasts through May. In the Southern Hemisphere,(south Australia, South America) it starts
in September and ends in November. A major event in
spring is the March Equinox. The equinox happens normally on March 20, 21, 22, or the 23. An equinox occurs
when the sun crosses the imaginary line in the sky above
the equator, when the tilt of Earth’s axis is exactly perpendicular to the sun’s rays. The daylight hours increase in
Polar Regions around the world. Night and day are almost exactly the same lengths, about 12 hours long all
over the world!

Ms. Nice is sure harmonizing the world! In Ms. Nice‘s
room, there is no voting, they compromise. Her students
learn strategies to evaluate ideas with specific criteria and
negotiation. Most of the time, they reach consensus. Ms.
Nice‘s students are always giving their all in her classroom. Ms. Nice says that the work that they do is for the
whole world to see so you want to make it right. They share
their work by newspaper, television, and the web.
Title I is jumping into spring! Mr. Hollan talks
about how he cares for the people around him by listening, responding, treating others the same way he would
like to be treated. Title I helps with I-STEP by doing instructional practices that students can use during I-STEP.
Title I is on going for reading comprehension, and reading
strategies. Title I helps harmonize the school by having
the same literacy groups in K-5. Title I is reading specific
books on Earth Day. He also said that during I-STEP that
they cannot lose an I-STEP booklet.
Mrs. Newkirk and her students have been harmonizing the world by recycling homework after it is completed
and checked. This month Mrs. Newkirk is busy scheduling end of the year conferences which are called ACRs.
She is also testing her students, and attending conferences. Mrs. Newkirk and Mrs. Vincent take a big part in
Kindergarten screening every year. They will be doing
the language, speech, and hearing screenings together.

In Mrs. Apple’s
class there are 7 kids that recycle. She has 2 kids that are
allergic to peanuts, 2 are allergic to grass, 1 is allergic to
dogs, 5 are allergic to tree pollen, 3 are allergic to cats, 3 are
allergic to poison ivy, and one
person is allergic to dairy! Her
kids calm down by when Mrs.
Apple says SLANT Her class
cares for people around them
by collaborating, talking, listening, giving time, and making cards. She wanted to add
that they are having a class
play about the constitution and
they are letting other classes
see. Parents are allowed to
come too. They did research
on the Convention delegates.
Mr. Bledsoe’s class
is working hard for I-step. The
class is working on area, volume, Government, the Constitution, solar system, and
genres of reading. The class is
recycling and reducing paper.
Mr. Bledsoe’s class sold 12
McDonalds peeler cards. The
class has mostly plant and
medicine allergies. His class is
trying to cover every topic
before I-step. They will also
review them. Mr. Bledsoe said
they were working on time
lines, and are reading a book
about time travel.
Mr. Schmaltz and
his class are ready for spring!
They are to getting better at
working together. They are doing that by working with partners or in pairs. Also they work
on projects. He encourages his
students to work harder or give
it their all by letting his students take the lead of their
work. He thinks that his students have improved in different areas like with dealing with
more difficult problems. Mr.
Schmaltz interacts with his
students by letting them
talk about their interests.
His students will not be
celebrating Earth Day but
they bring in paper, plastic, and cardboard on a
daily basis. The main
skill they are working on
is math and creating
equations.
For
McDonald’s peelers they
collected $40.00. They
are not taking any field
trips in April but in May
they are going to go to the
Louisville Science Center. They are having a
great year. He said the
year is going by fast.
This is a class
that’s going green! Mrs.
Stroud’s class recycles.
They are currently studying Earth Day in her
class. Every time they
leave the classroom, they
make sure the lights are
turned off so they help
conserve energy. They
also do class discussions
on how to conserve energy at home too! To harmonize Throop School
they participate in school
activities such as the
Read, Write, Walk-a-thon, Coin
Wars, and the selling of
McDonald’s peeler cards.
They are currently studying
many things. In Math, they are
doing algebraic expressions
and equations and in reading
and science, animal adaptations. The Revolutionary War
is the topic in Social Studies
while spelling words have
Greek and Latin roots. Mrs.
Stroud’s class sometimes has
arguments or disagreements.
She has a certain way of dealing with them. She has the students write down on a piece of
paper what happened in their
own words. Sometimes she
tells them to use it in their sentences instead of what someone
else did. They sometimes have
to go to conflict managers to
settle them. Mrs. Stroud prefers to use this method because
it allows her students to calmly
express their feelings where
they can see the other person’s
point of view.
a few videos to show his
class about Earth day. They
have been doing some
reader’s theaters projects
where his students are acting out scenes. He encourages his class to do their
best by giving them rewards and prizes and also
has his students motivate
each other. He energizes
his class by creating activities that gets them up
around the classroom. In
the morning, they focus on
math and reading, and later
during the day, they work
on social studies, spelling,
grammar, and they finish
with science. They use
computers to play spelling
and grammar games and
often get on their class
website. They sold about
250 dollars worth of
McDonalds peeler cards.
Mr. Walker’s class is
rising to the challenge of studying for ISTEP. Right now they
are focusing on getting prepared for ISTEP to the best of
their abilities. Mr. Walker has

Do You Believe There Is Or
Was Life On Other Planets?
by River Fleming
Mrs. Johnson’s
class is harmonized! They
help harmonize the world in
their classroom, by saying
kind things and making sure
no-one is left out. Mrs.
Johnson’s class goes green
by recycling and using both
sides of the paper. Her class
has improved by becoming
better readers and work together by going in groups
and working with partners.
They are working on puppet shows for the preschoolers. They have been
doing algebra in math. They
have been reading the book
“Hatchet.” Mrs. Johnson
and her class balance their
time by trying to get the most
important things done.
For Earth Day
Mrs. Sears’s class will be
playing some Earth Day
bingo. Her class saves energy by turning the faucets
off when they wash their
hands, and pick up any trash
around the school. The
project for spring is hatching chicks. Mrs. Sears keeps
her students from having
disagreements by using visual charts and picture
choices for their behaviors.
Mrs. Sears estimates that
they do two hours of math,
two hours of reading, and
one hour of habits of learning which is how to behave
in class and other things
that they need to know
about behavior in class. She
says that her students have
definitely improved on
learning to communicate
with others, and they are
currently learning about
their personal contact information.
Mrs. BenhamStarr’s class is working to-
gether on career project and
getting ready for 7th grade.
She interacts with her kids
face-to-face, on phone and
email. The class is helping
to harmonize the school by
working together on a service project and preparing
for 7th grade. They will be
doing critter projects this
month, where they make a
critter out of different
shapes. Her class will celebrate Earth Day by reading
a story and having a reading selection about being
responsible with resourses.
The main skills that her class
is working on this month are
research projects in writing,
learning about myths in
reading, and working on
solving equations in math.
Mrs. Weikart is
having a good last grading
period. Mrs. Weikart’s class
is working on counting by
two’s and writing complete
sentences. They are working on counting money together.
Mrs.
Cessna
shows harmony to everyone around her. Whether
it’s with a smile, a greeting,
or a small token, she shows
that she cares. She wants
her students to be the same
way. So, she teaches them
to be patient with the people
around them and to think
before they speak. Mrs.
Cessna conserves energy
by keeping her lights at half
turn, she turns off the electronic devices that she isn’t
using, and she uses a wood
stove instead of a natural
gas stove. To help harmonize her life and balance her
time Mrs. Cessna tries to get
everything done at school
that needs to get done at
school. This month her students are working on a book
about silly things, so she
has been able to accomplish
her goal this month. Her
student’s attention spans
have been increasing, so the
instruction has become
easier. This makes her goal
easier to reach.
Earth day is coming up and Mrs. Unger’s
class is getting ready! For
earth day she has nature
themed activities. Mrs.
Unger’s class “goes green”
by recycling. She conserves
energy in her classroom by
keeping it cold. She energizes her class by movement breaks and she mixes
up activities. She also uses
IPads daily. She harmonizes
her class by teaching them
behavior comes before content. Mrs. Unger also
teaches them social skills
between the different students.
Mrs. Bosley’s
class is being washed away
with harmonization. She
says that her class is harmonizing with each other.
Mrs. Bosley said that the
class get over disagreements by role play and talk
through them. They work
together on many different
things, whether it is with
pairs or with the whole
class. She said that they
work together on oral reading and also work book
pages. She energizes her
class, “With chocolate.” As
for the updates on the technology for her class room
she says that the only problem she has had is that the
buttons are falling off of the
computers.
Mrs. Donaldson
and her students work together by working in small
groups depending on her
student’s grade level. She
interacts with her 6th grade
students
and
their
Chromebooks to share and
talk about their choices.
Mrs. Donaldson encourages her students to work
harder or give it their all by
rewarding students with
texts and calls to parents to
tell them that their child is
doing a good job. Also she
gives her students treats for
good grades and they get a
daily percentage. The students in Mrs. Donaldson’s
class have improved so
much alot of her students
have been able to go back
to their regular classes. Her
main focus for each grade
level: kindergarteners are
working on place value,
second graders are working
on multiplying; third graders are into fractions while
fourth grade is multiplying
mixed numbers and sixth
gradeare studying integers.
Mrs. Kemple’s class is
making Earth day sun catchers. She is energizing her
students by making fun
projects. Her students are
working on two main skills
hand muscles and following
directions .Mrs. Kemple’s
students are working on
taking turns, sharing, and
respect for what others
built.
