Welcome to College for Kids!
The College for Kids program at Northwestern Michigan College in
Traverse City stimulates and nurtures the minds of young people ages
3–17 with 186 learning options. The 8-week program is designed for
highly motivated students to explore an area of interest; parents should
read descriptions carefully to find the best fit. Most classes are formatted in a week of 4 or 5 half days. One week, Kids on Campus week –
July 21-25, offers an optional supervised lunch break (bring your brown
bag lunch) and lets you choose morning and afternoon
classes for full days of fun (see page 18).

Amazing Alphabet Animal

Bonkers Over Bugs

visit as we listen to bug stories, sing songs, and

Go on a nature walk in search of bugs then
get creative making totally buggin’ art projects
like a spider mask and your very own insect

A Pirate Adventure

place on our own ‘island’ where we’ll create a

cool animal projects like a fabulous frog and a
“moving” snake. Build your own rainforest in a
jar, create a rainforest recipe book, and try new
fruits. Every day is a play day—in the rainforest!

week of hands-on discovery. You’ll paint, shape,
squish, print, sculpt, and glue—and still have
time for stories, songs, and movement. Moms
and dads: this week of art exploration develops

different kinds of dance like jazz, ballet, and

balance your body as you leap and twirl. You’ll

group. No dance experience is needed. Wear

stickers to give your friends a sniff of what you’ve

Meet Me at the Ranch—
Horseback Riding
(Grades 3–6) ENTERING GRADES 3-6

They gallop and trot, whinny and neigh; they
are massive and beautiful—and they capture
our imaginations. Get to know horses in this
three-day camp where you will be assigned your
own horse. At the Circle H Stables at Ranch
Rudolf, you will learn how to safely groom, care
for, handle, lead, saddle, and bridle your horse.
You will also learn basic western riding. Each day
includes riding lessons—from corral, to pasture,
to the last day’s trail ride. Wear heeled shoes or
boots and bring a snack, water bottle, and clothes
for inclement weather. Helmets provided.

Climbing trees is not only fun, it’s a sport! Using
arborist’s ropes and harnesses, you (and your

safely. You’ll even learn how to camp there.

exploring interesting building techniques used by

and test your own model-size electric car. You
will explore electricity, run time trials, and use
collected data to determine the hypotheses for

car running at its peak performance. The grand
finale is the ultimate race, testing your car for

adventure takes you to a different place each
day where you will discover useful backcountry
hiking and survival skills. Learn to plan and pack
for a camping trip, store food, pitch a tent, and
cook on a camp stove. Learn skills for wilderness
safety, map and compass reading, tracking, and
emergency shelter-building. Bring a backpack
with a water bottle and snack. Wear shoes for
walking (not flip flops).

Experience the world of scuba diving! Through
classroom work, confined water training, and
open water experience, you’ll learn about the basic
equipment, physics, physiology, environment,
and safety practices of the sport of scuba diving.
Students must be able to swim efficiently and be
comfortable in the water. Upon completion, you
will become a certified diver. Minimum age is 12.

Model Boat Building

Workshop (Grades 10–12) EEYW111
Learn the time-honored skill of boat-model
making in the Maritime Heritage Alliance’s
woodshop. Boat-hull models are used by boat
builders to examine the lines of the hull before
construction starts. They also make beautiful wall
decorations. Build a 17-inch half-hull model
of the 33’7” keel sloop, “The Witchcraft”, and
mount it on an oak backboard for display. The
last day includes a tour of the Maritime Heritage
Alliance’s boat fleet.

A Spoken Word Boot Camp

Have you ever wanted to take the stage and
change the world by what you say? Learn to craft
and deliver a powerful spoken word piece ready
for story slam competition. Live Spoken Word
venues have gained international popularity.
NPR has The Moth Story Hour, and TED
Talks: Ideas Worth Spreading sponsored its
first TEDYouth in 2013. Traverse City has its
own Here:Say Storytelling. Learn a process to
turn your unique life experiences into riveting
stories that audiences will not forget. Culminate
the week with a Story Slam competition and an
opportunity to perform for a local live listening
audience.

How to use ONLINE registration
Registration is easy—register online or fill out
a registration form, then phone, fax, mail, or
stop by the NMC Extended Education (EES)
office. Registration begins March 21 and continues throughout the summer. Take as many
classes as you like. For additional registration
forms, make copies or download them from
the website. Full payment is due at the time
of registration by credit card/debit card,
check, or cash.
•Remember that you must use your child’s
NMC ID and PASSWORD when using
online registration, not your own. Every
child who has ever taken a class at NMC
has an NMC ID.
Many classes fill quickly, so early enrollment
is encouraged. Please register by June 9 or
at least seven days prior to the start date of
your course. Some classes with low enrollment after June 10 may have to be cancelled.
When registering, please note the dates,
times, and locations of your classes. You will
be notified if changes occur or a class is filled.
Written confirmation will be sent only if you
include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

•If your child has taken classes before at
NMC, but you don’t know his/her login
information, contact the NMC Technology
Help Desk, (231) 995-3020. Once they
verify your child’s identity, they can give
you your child’s NMC ID and Password.
•If your child is a brand new student, an
NMC ID and Password are assigned when
you create a new account.
•If you can’t remember whether your child
has taken classes before, call the Help
Desk (231) 995-3020 or Extended Education (231) 995-1700.
•Your credit card is charged upon completion of the online registration process. If
you do not pay at the time of registration,
the class(es) in your cart will be dropped.
Refunds
A 100% refund will be given if a request is made at least five business days
prior to the class start date (call 995-1700) or if a class is cancelled. If you must
drop a class 2 to 4 business days prior to the class start date, you are eligible
for a 50% credit toward another College for Kids class, valid for one year.
Classes dropped the business day prior to class (usually the Friday before) are
not eligible for refund or partial credit. See full refund policy at nmc.edu/kids.

Financial aid scholarships
Limited funds are available to assist families meeting low-income requirements. To
receive an application, please call Extended
Education at (231) 995-1700.
1. Financial aid awards typically cover half
the cost of each class for a maximum of
three classes per child (as funds allow).
Awarded amount does not exceed $60
