Footprints in space and time
Sixteenth Conference of the Pacific Regional Branch of the
International Council on Archives
7-10th September 2015, New Zealand
Invitation
On behalf of the PARBICA Bureau and the Archives and Records Association
of New Zealand (ARANZ), we extend a warm welcome to you to participate in
PARBICA’s Sixteenth Biennial Conference from 7 to 10 September 2015 in
Auckland, New Zealand.
PARBICA 16 provides an opportunity for the archivists and records managers
of the Pacific Islands region, Australia and New Zealand to renew professional
contacts and share experiences with others who often work in isolation. We
look forward to welcoming you in Auckland, which is home to many Pacific
Island communities and several institutions with a shared interest in Pacific
Island records and archives.
Ms Amela Silipa
President, PARBICA
Conference Theme
A nation’s collective memory must be secured in these turbulent times of
surging technology along with the unforgiving waves of growing public
expectations and plummeting awareness of the need for strong
recordkeeping. The stakes are high, and the environment is evolving faster
and faster.
Pacific archives and records institutions also need to evolve. We need to build
resilience in this networked society, in order to meet the needs of its
citizens. This requires us to go above and beyond the basics of archival
management. It means being strategic advocates for the value of our
holdings and our institutions and better connecting our communities with
their records, using the technology and the channels now available to us.
Digitization, online access and outreach activity are key tools for achieving
this and yet many of us are scattered geographically and operate with limited
resources. A key opportunity for progress can be to form international
partnerships and harness the momentum that global initiatives provide.
We invite you to come and be part of this discussion at PARBICA 16. Together we
will discuss ideas, share experiences and look for partnerships as we explore the
best way build this resilience.
Programme Overview
The programme will be structured with a mixture of conference sessions and
practical training workshops. Conference content is expected to include
topics such as strategic influencing skills, digitisation of archives, and making
collections available online. Workshops will cover topics including; how to
assess the significance of your collections, managing your collections with ICA
AtoM, and disaster preparedness.

...the Pacific Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives.
PARBICA was formed in 1981 and carries out the aims of the International
Council on Archives (ICA) in the Pacific Region. PARBICA represents
government agencies, non-government organizations, and individuals
working in the field of archives or records management in over twenty
nations, states and territories in the Pacific.
Delegates will also have opportunities to take part in visits to archive
institutions with an interest in Pacific archives.
We hope that this bilateral exchange of knowledge, skills and experience will
benefit members of both associations and facilitate the formation of
partnerships that can help build resilience.
Conference Objectives
PARBICA has held fifteen successful conferences since its foundation in 1981.
Knowledge gained at the conferences is taken back to the islands of the
region by participants to inform their work and to provide in-country training
for other archives and records staff. PARBICA 16 is an opportunity for:
•
Training, professional development and identification of concrete
implementation plans in areas identified as most necessary by PARBICA’s
members
•
Strategic planning for the next two years of PARBICA’s work to improve
the conditions of archives and recordkeeping in the Pacific
•
