August 2015 - Parents and Family

Student involvement can be key to your student’s success at Missouri S&T. “Involvement” is defined as any activity outside the classroom which enhances and contributes to student learning (Astin, 1993) . Involvement can help your student discover their passions and
strengths, build their resume, and assist with personal and professional development. Involved students report higher levels of satisfaction with their overall college experience. There are over 200 ways to connect with other Miners and build community. Encourage
your student to meet with a Student Life Peer Involvement Advisor or visit the various Recognized Student Organizations (RSO’s) at
Miner Rama on Friday, August 28th at the Puck! For more information on involvement, visit studentlife.mst.edu.

Each year hundreds of employers recruit Missouri S&T students for internships, Co-ops, and full-time positions.
Employers expect applicants to have a good GPA, related work experience, and involvement in leadership activities. The Career Opportunities and Employer Relations (COER) staff complied a Professional Development Plan for
students to follow at every stage in their academic career. To assist students through every stage COER offers a
variety of events and services to students. For more information visit , career.mst.edu.

“Let your student grow up. They have to make their own choices regarding their future. They will need a sounding
board and some guidance throughout the process and they will come to you if they trust you are going to do just that
- offer guidance, not make decisions for them. If the decisions are wrong; they'll figure it out and correct the path.”
