In those days, the muleteers from Varzi travelled for weeks to bring back oil and salt from the Ligurian coast. The women of the valley sent them on their way with this typical cake, which was ideal for long journeys because it kept so well. Thanks to the abundance of almonds growing on the surrounding hills, the women of Varzi gradually perfected this unique tasting, easy to make product. The recipe has been passed down over generations, and we continue to make the cake by hand using only the best, natural ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, almonds) that result in the inimitable aroma of this dry yet crumbly, longlasting delicacy.
