CAT Cover Model Winner

Arthur and I
are honored
to be
chosen as
the cover
model
contest
winners for
the May
issue. He
wasn't as
nervous as I
was on the
way to the
photo shoot.
Getting a
5-month-old
kitten to sit still for more than a few seconds
at times can be a difficult task. Most of the
pictures we take at home are a tan blur!
Little did I know, that I was in the hands of
three professionals: Kelly, Diane and Mr.
Parrott are AMAZING! They were able to
truly capture the essence of Arthur in the
photos and it was a blast. It was apparent
that they care immensely for animals
and have gigantic hearts.
Cheers!

URGENT, URGENT!
My Time Is Running Out!
I’m happy, friendly and
playful - how can someone
who loves life so much be
running out of time? I once
was part of a family, but the
landlord wouldn’t allow me
and my owner brought me
here in tears, telling everyone what a fantastic boy
I am. My name is Diesel
(A015687) and I’m a
2-year-old Terrier who is
ready to brighten your life
and make your house a
home. I get along great
with everyone - adults, children, dogs and cats - and I love to go for walks. My former
owner said I am great with the neighborhood dogs. I’ve been
melting the hearts of all who meet me because I have such a
light-hearted and playful approach to life and I enjoy meeting
everyone. Won’t you please give me a second chance at a
loving family? Dogs arrive every day and there’s just not
room for us all, so please hurry! My adoption fee includes
Distemper/Parvo vaccine, Kennel Cough vaccine, Rabies
Vaccine, deworming, and 30 day flea/tick treatment. The
shelter is now open on Sundays, from 1pm to 4pm, in case
you can’t come during the week. It’s also open on Saturdays
from Noon to 4pm. For info, call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484 or email [email protected].
I am sponsored in loving memory of Hank Harrington.

My name is
Koah and I’m
looking for a
real, honest-togoodness forever home. I
had a home that
I thought would
be forever but
they turned their
back on me and
viewed me as
disposable. I’m
approximately
4-years-old,
house-trained,
crate-trained,
walk very nicely
on a leash, and
know basic obedience! I am up
to date on all vaccinations, I’m spayed, I’m very healthy
and I tested negative for heartworms. Additional training
for me will also be provided in your home! I will do best in
a home where I’m the only pet and I want a fenced in back
yard to run around in and play. If you would like me to be
part of your family and would like to know how you can
adopt me, please call 917-841-7319 for more information.

My name is
Kori and I’m
the mother of
Bowie
(pictured on
page 42). I
had a home
but was left to
fend for
myself when
everyone
moved away.
I’m a beautiful
Calico who’s
3-years of
age and I’ve
been spayed and vaccinated. Unfortunately, I’m having a
much harder time than most abandonded pets. I’m so
upset by it that I pulled some of the hair off of my tail (insert
sad face emoticon here). When I do feel safe, I’m a purry
girl and expert biscuit maker. I’m also one of those kitties
who will lift up to meet your hand to be petted. Please save
me and help heal my broken heart. If you would like to
know more about me or inquire about the adoption process,
you may also call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or

URGENT, URGENT!
My Time Is Running Out!
I do hope my sad eyes are
melting your heart - you
see, I’m a fantastic girl and
I’m running out of time at
the shelter. My name is
Boo (A015651) and I’m a
brindle/white Terrier mix
who is just 2-years-old. I
once lived with a family, but
they moved and couldn’t
take me. I keep a very
clean kennel which suggests I’m house-trained or
crate-trained and I’m soooo very friendly to people! I get
along fine with other dogs and they say I have such a
sweet demeanor that I’d probably have no problem with
cats. I can sit on command, too, as my photo clearly
shows. And here’s even more great news: I am sponsored, which means my adoption fee is already paid!
Won’t you give me the second chance I deserve? Dogs
arrive every day at this shelter and there’s just not enough
room for us all, so I hope you’ll hurry to meet me! My
adoption fee includes Distemper/Parvo vaccine, Kennel
Cough vaccine, Rabies Vaccine, deworming, and 30 day
flea/tick treatment. If you can’t come during the week, the
shelter is open on Saturdays from Noon to 4pm and on
Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. For more information, please

SOUTHERN REPTILE SAVIORS RESCUE
My name is Rico, however
I’m really a girl. I’m a few
years old but still kind of
small. I’ve been at Southern Reptile Saviors Rescue for several months.
I’m still not very cuddly but
if you've got some food, I'll
be happy to share it with
you. I really prefer to free
roam and I’m pretty good about coming back to sit under
my lights for a while each day. Other iguanas and dogs
don’t bother me at all. I sure would love to find my forever
home. To learn more, call Nicole at 910-470-6299. View
other available iguanas at www.thepamperediguana.com

My name is
Oreo and I’m a
10-month-old male
kitty looking for a
forever, safe, inside-only, loving
home. I just want
to be loved, however, I will be very shy at first as I’m scared in new surroundings. I will try to hide until I get to know my new family. I love to play with my foster sisters and brothers so you
can be sure that I’m good with other cats and dogs. I’ve
been neutered, vaccinated, tested negative for Feline Leukemia/FIV and have been microchipped. To find out more
about me, call 910-200-0612 or email [email protected].
PENDER ENDANGERED
ANIMAL RESCUE
My name is Meenu and I am an
elegant lady with so much love
to give. After 15 happy years, I
found myself homeless, so I am
looking for a new home where I
can spend the rest of my years
warm, safe, and loved. My
favorite thing to do in the world
is sit on laps. I'll sit on your lap
all day if you'll let me. I may be
15, but I have lots of time and
love left in me. I am spayed,
microchipped and up to date
on vaccinations. I am also eligible for the “All 4 Cats
Seniors 4 Seniors” program - a great way for me to meet a
distinguished person! Please call 301-943-4029 to set a
time to visit with me in my foster home!
Hello, will you give me a second chance? My name is
Rosebud and I am an American Staffordshire Terrier. I
am a young lady and just as
beautiful as I can be. I love to
be around people and am full
of energy and love. I was
dumped here at the rescue,
just thrown away like I was
nothing. Luckily, the rescue
wanted me and now I am
safe. I am up to date on all shots and ready for my new
family. I won’t take up that much room and will give you
lots of attention in return. Please email my friends at

My name is Smush
but maybe I should
have been named
Mush because I’m
super loving and
easy going. I’m a
very handsome 14
pound guy who is
just 5-years-old. I
have gorgeous long
hair that you’ll love
to run your fingers
through. I lived in a
home so I have
good house manners, I’ve already been neutered and vaccinated, I get
along with other animals and I love being around people.
Please call 910-383-2100 for more info about how you can
adopt me.
Dax (A082193) is my
name and having a family
is my game! I’m an outgoing, loveable guy who
ended up in the shelter
due to no fault of my own.
Now, I just want to get
out of here! My mates
here are great but they
sure are a noisy bunch.
My breed is called a
Dutch Shepherd and I am
1½-years-old. I’m a very
special companion who just loves to lay at your feet and
adore the person you are. I love to romp outside, chase
after sticks, and fetch things for you. I’m neutered and
vaccinated and I’m as faithful as they come! Come see me
soon. The shelter is located at 244 Georgetown Road in
Jacksonville. To adopt me, please call 910-455-0182.

My name is Buffy. I am a
beautiful, Tortie girl who is
spayed and approximately
6-years-old. I was rescued
when I was a kitten and had
to have both eyes removed
because of an infection. I
had to be surrendered when
my family could no longer
keep me. I am able to find
my way around my foster mom's house and do all the normal cat things - I just need to know where my litterbox and
dishes are located. I am very clean and love to cuddle
with my foster mom. I get along with other cats and dogs.
I would love a forever home with lots of love. If you’re

PAWSITIVE PARTNERS PRISON PROGRAM
Hi! My name is Curry and I am a
spicy mix of Labrador Retriever
and Shepherd. At almost 70
pounds, I am a big boy, but even
though I am energetic, I am also
eager to please and very smart.
When I graduate from the PPPP
on May 14th, my inmate trainers
and the volunteers from Monty’s
Home will have taught me doggy
manners, all the basic commands, and how to walk well on
a leash. I am house-trained, neutered and up to date on
shots. If you are looking for a new best friend to spice up

Hi, I'm Stanley!
I am beautiful
4-month-old Angora
rabbit in need of a
foster or permanent
family who is willing
to work on socializing me and providing me the diet required for my breed.
I am currently using
a litter pan regularly and like to be petted in between my
long beautiful ears. I love to run free in my foster home, so
I would like to be a part of a family who keeps me safe
from other furbabies in the house while allowing me time to
exercise. Please call my guardians with RescueConnect at
www.rescueconnectnc.com or at 910-302-7290.

My name is Sparkles and I
was found as a stray. I’ve
since been spayed, vaccinated,
tested negative for heartworms
and take heartworm/flea prevention. I’m crate-trained,
house-trained and very happy.
I'm only about 23 pounds, 2 to
3-years-old and purebred Beagle. I love to run around in the
back yard and chase butterflies.
I also like to take walks, ride in the car, play with my foster
brother and play with my toys. I would love to have a
fenced yard and maybe another dog to play with or even a
little girl or boy, but will do alright with just a mom and dad
to love me. Call Pat at 910-207-2071 to meet me.

I know you have not
seen anything cuter
than me - my foster
mommy tells me so all
the time! I am Poppy
and I am 10-years-old.
I had a really rough life
before the rescue
found me. I was skin
and bones and had to
get some teeth pulled but I am so happy now.
I like to talk (I don't call
it barking - I converse if
you will listen!), eat
treats, sleep in the sun,
and run around the
house. A while back, I
developed a cough
and did not feel well.
My foster mom found out I had congestive heart failure. I
was put on medication and have never felt or sounded
better. I have a new ‘leash on life’ and I will enjoy every
moment because I’m moving and shaking better than
ever. Okay, so maybe it wasn't the greatest news but I
won't let that get me down - and it shouldn't stop you from
meeting me! To adopt me, call Carolinas Russell Rescue
at 910-821-3504 and leave a message or you can send an
email to [email protected].
I am sponsored in loving memory of
Oscar and Madison Pour, two very special,
life changing Jack Russell Terriers.
My name is Einstein and
I am as smart as my
namesake! I came in to
rescue in 2014 when my
mommy of my entire life (I
can't count all the years
on my paws, but they tell
me I am about 11 now)
was no longer able to
afford to care for me. She
was moving to a shelter
and knew I needed a better life! You see, I have
canine diabetes. The cool
thing about rescue is they
helped me get it all under control! I was once taking twice
the amount of insulin but with a low sugar diet, I was able
to kick that habit! Folks think it is hard to care for a diabetic dog, but I am so EASY! The rescue has gotten my
diet down to the BEST food for the lowest expense, so that
my new family won't have to spend any more than if I was
a young pup (which I am inside). My insulin lasts months
and is easy to find (and only $25 a bottle). Otherwise, I am
a normal dude who loves hoarding toys, chasing rodents
and butterflies, and snuggling with my foster mom. I have
all my vaccines, I’m neutered and I tested heartworm
negative! Could you be my new family? To adopt me, call
Carolinas Russell Rescue at 910-821-3504 and leave a
message or email to [email protected].
I am sponsored in celebration of Rocky Pour’s
6th Gotcha Day Anniversary with hopes that
you’ll adopt a senior dog, too.

◄Hi, my name is Jinx and
I'm full of spunk. I am a
special needs girl since I
am deaf. Even though I
can't hear how special I am,
it does not stop me from
feeling love. I'll always
show you how happy I am.
I love running around a yard
and I love all animals and
people, even kids! I get so
excited! I may be better
with older kids because I
get a little overjoyed and
just want to sit on little one’s laps. They don't always like it.
I sleep in my crate every night, I am potty-trained and have
learned a few commands with sign language! I am smart
and would love someone who doesn't mind taking time out
to teach me more! I'm so eager to please.
◄My name is Tip and I am
a middle-aged Lab mix who
is about 7-years-old. I have
some premature grey on my
muzzle, but that’s because I
am a distinguished fella. I
am quiet, laid-back and
super easy. I don’t pull on
my leash and I rest quietly
at your feet. I am a turn key
kind of dog. I am neutered,
heartworm negative, vaccinated, house-trained and do well with cats, kids and dogs.
Did I mention I am deaf? Don’t let that scare you at all. It
actually makes it easier. You can play music loud and I am
not afraid of thunderstorms at all. Keep a consistent routine
and throw in some hand signals and I will do fine. I am the
last dog to be adopted from that hoarding case in Shallotte.
My owner was arrested and I am ready to move on with my
life. Will you help me with that?
►My name is Peter and I have
the most handsome smile. I absolutely love people, I am outgoing and I have a bubbly personality. I am neutered, vaccinated
and heartworm negative. I was
at a local shelter that was overcrowded. I was a stray and you
can tell I didn’t come from the
best background, but I am willing
to learn and I am a quick study.
So, it shouldn’t take me very long
at all to learn how to become
your pampered pet. Come see
me at Petco every weekend.
◄My name is
Izzy and I am
a 5-year-old,
mid-sized
Rottweiler. I
am pretty close
to being purebred as you
can tell. I am
almost housetrained and
I’m spayed,
vaccinated and
heartworm
negative. I was
diagnosed with
juvenile cataracts and I cannot see out of one eye. This
limited vision does not seem to bother me at all. I do really
well with other dogs, but I do not live with a cat in my foster
home, so we can’t say for sure how I would do. If you are a
Rottie fan, you will love my sweet, even temperament and
my beautiful perfect markings.
◄Would you be interested
in adopting an inside-only
cat who is spayed, vaccinated and has lived with
other cats? My name is
Frannie and I’m 6-yearsold and ready to move in
with you today. My owner
surrendered me because
they could no longer afford a pet. I’m a sweet
and loving girl and I really
enjoy being held. Please
consider opening your
heart and home to me. I
really need you.
►My name is Cowboy
and I love to wrestle up
fun. I am 3-years-old
and I am a beautiful
American Pit. I have
been homeless for as
long as I can remember.
A local vet office took me
in after I escaped from a
group of dog abusers. I
had cuts and bites all
over my face. The kind
people at the vet’s office
nursed me back to health
and made me beautiful
again. I have a great smile and I love other dogs and cats. I
do well with women and most men but some very strong,
muscular men scare me. I try to get along with everyone. I
am up to date on my shots and I am neutered. Please help
me find my forever home. I am a lover and not a fighter.

My name is Celeste (A082170). Just take a look at me!
Aren’t I the most gorgeous feline you’ve ever seen! And
not only am I gorgeous, but I come with loads of great
feline qualities, too. I’m litter-box trained, I am up to date
on vaccinations, I tested negative for Feline Leukemia,
I’m spayed, I’m already declawed, and I’m a pure treasure to hold on your lap. I keep my fur in great shape with
my sandpaper tongue and have no problem helping you
with your grooming needs as well. I’m very congenial
and loving. Come on by the Onslow County Animal
Shelter to play with me and you’ll certainly want to take
me home with you on the spot! I’ll be waiting for you.

◄Hi there! I’m
Tracie (A077956)
and I am the loving,
confident, intelligent,
and brave Labrador
Retriever mix you've
been looking for. At
just 9-months-old, I
am learning basic
manners and how to

Please come on out

are a match!
◄I’m a true lover boy
named Prince Simon
(A078086). When you
talk to me and give me
attention, I’ll roll over so
you can rub my tummy.
Now how many princes
will do that? I’m also
extremely handsome
with my medium-length,
silky gray fur. I’m looking for someone to
share my kingdom.
Hurry on over and let
me invite you in!
►Hello there! I’m
Trish (A077769) and
I’m a 1-year-old Tabby
girl. In my photo, you
caught me making
biscuits on this soft
blanket. Blankets are
nice, but I’d rather be
making biscuits in your
soft lap! I am already
spayed, so you don’t
even have to worry
about getting that
done. Won’t you come
over to the shelter and
listen to me purr as
you rub me? There’s
no finer sound!

they come. I recently behaved
beautifully at an
adoption fair but
I’m still waiting for
my forever family.
I’m just 8-monthsold and already
spayed. Hurry on
over and meet me!
►Greetings!
My name is Mitzi
(A078004) and, as
you can tell, I am an
impressive young
lady. I enjoy the
small things in life
such as spending
time with my human
companions and running around with my
furry friends. I am
approximately 40
pounds, 9-monthsold, spayed and a Labrador Retriever mix. Come see me!
◄Orange Tabby
boys are some of
the finest cats
around, and I’m no
exception! My
name is Robin
(A078155) and I’m
a 1-year-old boy
with a sweet and
friendly personality.
I’m hoping someone
reading this will see
what a gem I am
and come get me!
I’ll be waiting to purr
when I see you.

You'll always be
our best boy
Hello there! My name
is Buddy Boy, and I’m
a 1-year-old Tabby with
striking tiger stripes.
My personality is anything but ferocious,
though. Handsome as
can be with gorgeous
golden eyes, I am a
genuine sweetheart. I
will roll over so that you
can scratch my belly.
And if I see you in the
doorway, I will meow
until you come in and
pet me. Yes, I just love
people! I also get
along well with the
other cats at the shelter
- some cats are dominant but I’m laid-back and relaxed.
I’m also neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Hurry
over to the shelter and see for yourself why the volunteers
say I’m “simply a great boy.” For driving directions or more
info, call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022 today!

I am Rickie Bobby
but you can call me
your best buddy. I
love playing with
other dogs, going
for long walks and
riding in the car. I
am a healthy young
man who needs a
great family to call
my own. I won’t be
out on the race

7th you can get
more of me, and

Please call 910-792-9014 to adopt us!
◄Still recognize me? I'm
Neon, a male Tabby, and
I'm now about 7-monthsold. I was featured in a
previous issue of PawPrints and was adopted,
but now I'm back again.
My adoptive mom broke
up with her boyfriend and
had to move, so I was
brought back to the CAT
adoption center. That's a
lot of upheaval for a sweet
rescue kitten like me, but
I'm adjusting well. Please
come meet me at Petsmart in Wilmington and consider
making me your new best friend for life!
◄Hi, my name
is Ernie! I'm an
8-month-old boy.
My brother,
pictured below,
is Bert. He's
basically my best
friend and protects me just like
a big brother, so
it's really important to me that you adopt us together. I was very shy
when I first arrived, but I’ve really warmed up and made
a lot of progress in the past few weeks. I'm a very calm
lap kitty, and I love taking naps! If you can be patient
with me, you'll quickly see how very sweet I am. Hope
you're ready to let two sweet boys into your life!
We’re at Petsmart 7 days a week.
◄Need a little
sunshine in your life?
Adopt me and I will
brighten your days with
my sweet, beautiful
presence. My name is
Sunshine and I'm an
8-month-old orange
Tabby girl. I am very
affectionate, gentle and
sweet, but I am not
happy at all being in a
cage at Petsmart. Please do me a big favor and take me
home with you so I can get some peace and quiet and lots
and lots of love. You won't regret it!
◄Hey there, I'm Silver!
I'm a gray Tabby girl,
about 1 to 2-years-old.
I'm kind of shy, but with
lots of love, I can become the wonderful cat
the people here know
that I am. I also love
playing and appreciate
being petted, but I
would probably do best
in a mellow environment
where I can warm up to
you and your family at a
pace that feels comfortable to me. If you want to see just
how pretty and lovely I am, visit me at the adoption center!

▲I'm Bert, an 8-month-old boy. Ernie, my brother,
is pictured above. We're best buds. Of the two, I'm
the more playful one, but I'm also sweet and loving.
I'm a bit protective of Ernie because he's still a little
shy. Please adopt us together! It would make me
so sad to leave my brother behind. Will you make a
little space in your home for the two of us?
Wilmington, NC
◄Hey, I'm Cagney! I'm
a 6-month-old Calico girl.
My former roommate and
cuddle buddy Rinna has
been adopted, so I'm all alone
in my cage now, patiently
waiting for a home. I'm very
shy and don't like coming out
of my cage much, but I love
being petted. I need someone
who will be patient and loving
with me. I would be happiest
in a quiet and mellow environment, so my new home should
have no small children or loud noises, please.

Wow, talk about a readymade family dog! I’m
that and more! My name
is Max and I’m a 2-yearold Bernese Mountain
Dog mix. I have all the
qualities everyone looks
for in a dog, just keep
reading: I’m housetrained, I’m good with
children, I like other
dogs, I stay in a fence, I
never try to dig, I know
how to use a pet door, I
can ‘sit’ and ‘shake’ on
command and I’m superfriendly to everyone! As
for my health, I’m neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I love soft
treats and I love spending time with humans. Do yourself a
HUGE favor and hurry on out to the shelter. This is your
chance to bring a wonderful, well-behaved companion
home. For adoption information or for directions to the
shelter, please call the New Hanover Humane Society at
910-763-6692 .
Hello! My name is
Dierks (A078024)
and, as you can see,
I certainly know how
to strike a pose. Not
only am I a good
dancer, but I also
am pretty good at
charming my way
into the hearts of
everyone I meet. At
5-years-old, I’m a
perfectly sized Beagle, just 26 pounds.
I also walk well on a
leash and stay right
beside you. And
yes, I do love to
snack on treats!
Come on over and
see for yourself what a darling companion I would be. My
adoption fee includes a physical examination, heartworm
test, a rabies vaccination and neuter surgery. For driving
directions or more information, call Brunswick County
Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services at 910-754-8204.

◄Where’s my Bullwinkle? I
need someone to love me unconditionally and protect me
forever! My name is Natasha
and, like the famous cartoon
character, I am rather beautiful!
I’m white with Tabby markings
and I’m only 14-months-old. I
am very sweet, love people,
and even get along with other
kitties. Okay, so really I am
Bullwinkle’s advisor but we’ll
keep that between me and you; he doesn’t need to know.
◄Don’t confuse me with the
singer, Nelly, because I
have never been arrested. I
can be a little aloof like the
singer but that’s a good
thing. I don’t want just anyone adopting me! But I do
hold the trump card; I am
declawed, so your furniture
is safe with me. I am just
4-years-old, with luxurious
black fur and just a spot of
white on my chest.
►Greta Garbo has
nothing on me. Okay,
well, maybe one thing
- she is Swedish, and
I’m not. But I am just
as beautiful and have
a modern spirit and
irresistible allure,
that’s what they say
about her. I am only
2-years-old, and a
desirable Calico. I do
have one short coming: a short tail! It’s not a big deal, just a
good conversation starter. I love attention, as any starlet
does, so don’t stick me in a corner!
◄I’m Turbo charged! I’m
small but powerful and always
ready to go! I am a 1-yearold male Tabby who is overlooked because I’m not a
kitten. I don’t get it, though. I
love to play, love people and
toys and, well, if I say so myself, I’m an all-around good
guy! So please give me a
chance before kitten season
starts and I have to wait
another year!
►Look at that
face, I mean can
it be any more
beautiful?
My name is
Maisey and I’m a
5-year-old Calico
and Maine Coon
mix. Some might
say I’m a little
overweight at
almost 15
pounds, but I just
say I am vertically challenged
and should be a
little taller - which would fit my weight! I love to be
brushed, but with this mane, who wouldn’t and I love
attention. I don’t mind other cats but am not interested in
playing with them. I’m afraid they’ll mess up my hair!
►Maybe I spent just a
little too much time in the
French quarter, hence
the name, Orleans, but
for whatever reason, I
have chronic runny eyes.
I say it’s because I am
allergic to this shelter and
want out! If you take me
home and it doesn’t clear
up, it’s no big deal.
When you wash your
face in the morning, just
call me in and wash
mine! I am a 2-year-old,
white and brown Tabby
who gets along with other cats and loves to play,
especially with the laser light.
◄Nikita is a name
normally given to a
ninja. Sometimes I
seem like a ninja because I love to sleep
under stuff so it looks
like I am hiding. My
sister, who was also
a beautiful gray like
me, just got adopted
so now I am waiting
patiently. A ninja has
to be patient and wait
for the right moment.
So I am waiting for
the right family. You
won’t be disappointed
as I am very friendly, just a good hider!

Hi there! I’m
Spike but don't let
the name fool
you, I am a not a
tough guy at all
(but I play one in
my JRT life). I
am a handsome,
squeaky toy loving, 9-year-old
Parson Russell
who recently
moved from Georgia to be near the
coast. I mean,
who wouldn't? I
am well-mannered, goofy and charming. I know how to sit,
stay, lay down, and get back up on command - all those
tricks humans like. But what I love most is being held and
giving you kisses because I adore people and kids. Cats
on the other hand, not so much. But dog friends, sure! I
share my awesomeness with all my canine friends in my
foster home. I am neutered, current on all vaccines and
microchipped! I am also house-trained so you don't have
to teach this guy new tricks (man, am I ever a funny guy). I
know you will love me when you meet me! To adopt me,
please call Carolinas Russell Rescue at 910-821-3504 and
leave a message or you can send an email to

and I’m ready to steal your

brown eyes and my cuddly
Beagle body! I have a laidback and relaxed attitude
toward life and will surely
bring you lots of happiness
if you adopt me. I can sit
on command, I enjoy going
for car rides and I play well
with other dogs. I’ve never
been around those animals
called cats. I am neutered,
6-years-old and ready to

◄My name is Sophie

Tortoiseshell girl who
is looking for a loving
family! I’m a very
friendly and sweet kitty
who gets along well
with children (I once
lived with children
ages 9, 12 and 15).
I’m spayed, up to date
on shots, great in the

►Hello! My name
is Penny and
I'd love to have
the chance to
meet you. I’m a
3-year-old, 76
pound, Rottie mix
girl who is already
spayed, vaccinated
and on heartworm
prevention. I would
do well in a home
with adults-only or
teenagers (I’m a
little big for small
kids) and I have a
special fondness for
women. I like to
keep my kennel
clean, I do not dig
and I play nicely inside a fenced-in yard. One thing my
friends have noticed about me is that I sure do love stuffed
squeaky toys! I don’t tear them up - no, no - I’m very careful with them and treat them gently. Barney, pictured on

6 pounds, amigos! That’s all we weigh - each! We’re so
easy to hold and so easy to love, too! I’m a little boy
named Blu and this is my brother, Carlos. We are Blue
Chihuahuas, which means our fur is a rare dark-grey color
for our breed. We are about 3-years-old and tiny. We
were surrendered to Animal Control, but now we’re waiting at Pender Humane Society for our lucky families to
come along. We are two friendly little guys who enjoy
meeting new people and accepting treats from your fingers. We are already vaccinated and neutered and can
be adopted together or separately. Hurry on over to meet
us - a couple of cuties like us are bound to attract a lot of
interest. For driving directions or more information,

►My name is Wellington
(A320920) and I’m a
4-year-old German Shepherd mix who will be a
great companion to any
loyal family. I had been
running loose for a couple
of weeks before I came
here to the shelter. I like
having a roof over my head
and a full belly, but I’m not
finding shelter life to be the
most relaxing situation. I
love the employees here
and I love it when visitors
take me into the adoption
room or the play yard. I
tested ok with cats, I’m good with dogs of all sizes, I like
being brushed and I would be happiest in a home with another dog who could be my canine bestie. I know how to sit
on command and how to walk nicely on a leash but most
importantly, I know how to love you unconditionally.
◄You are looking at a television celebrity! That’s
right! I was recently featured on WWAY-TV’s Pet
Pals. My name is Bianca
(A319293) and I love playing with toys and chowing
down on some yummy kitty
treats. Not sure exactly
how I became homeless,
but I was smart enough to
wander up to someone’s
house that would intervene
and get me to safety here
at the shelter. I’m just 1½years-old and ready to give
my heart to you.
►Have you ever heard of a
backyard breeder because
it’s pretty obvious that’s
where I came from. My
name is Duchess (A321298)
and I deserve to be treated
like royalty. I’m a 3-year-old
Dachshund mix who is super
sweet...like really sweet. I
love attention and crave
being rubbed and brushed.
I’m an adorable Lap Dog with
an adorable overbite. Other
dogs love me and I love
them. I know how to sit on
command and am a professional heart stealer. I’ve
already been spayed and vaccinated so I’m ready to go.

◄If your home needs a
friendly girl with lots of
love to give, I pray you will
adopt me. My name is
Stella (A321208) and I’m
a 1-year-old Labrador and
Dalmatian mix. The folks
here found me straying in
the Birch Creek area. I’m
current on vaccinations
and have been spayed.
I’m good on a leash, I love
tennis balls, I know how to
sit on command, and I will
lay patiently by your feet.
Please love me.
►Well, I thought I’d
found my forever home
but that didn’t quite
work out the way I’d
planned. As a kitten, I
was listed on Craigslist,
and fast forward 2year’s later...I’m here at
the shelter...looking for
a home again. My
name is Izzy (A320182)
and I am currently
accepting applications
for a very important
position in my life. I’m
looking for someone or
a whole family to be my
everything. I love being
held, I’m good with
kids, and I’ve lived with
dogs and other cats. Please rescue me forever and ever.
►Please
don’t overlook
me because I
have black
fur. That
would be very
shallow and
unfortunate
because you
will be missing out on one
amazing companion. My
name is
Teddy (A319722) and I love to be petted. I’m laid-back and
cuddly, I’m a pro at making biscuits, and I’m a handsome
love bug. I’m a purr machine and the kind of kitty who will
seek you out to show you love. At only 2-years of age, we’ll
have lots of time to love on each other.

Single, mature, browneyed boy, in search of
my forever home! Are
you looking for love

I am a 6-year-old German Shepherd mix but
don't let the number

I look tough on the

am a handsome, affectionate pup who is current on vaccinations and ready to get
a second chance at happiness. I tested heartworm positive, so a very special family is all I need to get my heart
healthy and strong so I can spend the rest of my days as a
faithful companion. I am currently available for adoption at
the Onslow County shelter during their scheduled hours of
operation. Please come by and see me, I just know we're

I’m December’s Max.
I am a real gentleman
and a great companion. I do not make
ANY noise. I will quietly follow you everywhere because I just
want to be near you.
I love to go for short
walks and will not pull
on the leash and I
love riding in the car.
I’m 10-years-old and
have some arthritis
and I’m a little hard of
hearing. I will come
and nudge you when
it is time for a potty break. At night, I will go in a crate if
you really want, but I prefer to just crawl on my doggie
bed and sleep. I do like treats very much and will
mooch if you let me. I love to have head and butt rubs
and in the mornings, I like to do a happy dance that
makes my foster mom laugh. Please consider adopting
me as I need a permanent place to rest my paws. To

My name is
Bootsie and
I'm an 8-yearold mini Poodle. My mom
and dad rescue me when I
was 4-yearsold. Unfortunately, my
mom passed
away and my
dad is facing
some health challenges so he contacted the great folks
at Carolina Poodle Rescue for help. I am in a fantastic
foster home with good food, warm beds, wonderful
walks and some great, new doggy friends. Even though
I am blind, it does not slow me down. My foster mom
took me to an eye specialist - it's not cataracts and
there isn't anything they can do to restore my eyesight.
I am not in any pain and I have adapted very well. I
navigate all over my foster home. Please note my fabulous sunglasses. You've gotta work with what you've
got. Right? I meet lots of people who want to take my
picture when I am out and about, and I get along with
everybody - even cats. I like having friends but I've
spent most of my life as an only dog so if you want to be
my special friend, being an only dog is fine with me. I
am a real snuggle bunny and am looking for a place to
call my own, forever. If that is with you, please go to
our webpage and complete an application. I look forward to meeting you! To adopt me, call 864-489-3559

Hi, my name is
Yana! I was
brought to Paw’s
Place when my
former owner discovered that there
was something
seriously wrong
with my leg. I was
just 5-weeks-old
at the time. Paw’s
Place immediately
took me to the vet
and then a specialist to see
about my leg. It’s a long story, but for 8-weeks I had my
leg in a splint. I also wore a “halo” and wasn’t allowed
much activity. Then, just recently, the doctors and Paw’s
Place agreed it would be best to let me grow a bit before
making any decision regarding my leg. So for now, I can
just be a puppy and learn all the things I missed out on
before. I’m vaccinated, microchipped and I will soon be
spayed. Paw’s Place and my trainer think it would be
best if I was adopted by a family who is very familiar with
the Husky Breed. Once I am adopted, Paw’s Place will
continue to consult with the specialist and my new family
on what is in my best interest regarding my leg. I am in a
foster home, so if you want to meet me, let’s schedule an
appointment by writing [email protected]. You can
also call 910-845-7297 for more info on me.

◄My name is Dudley
and I came to Paw’s
Place in a round-about
sort of way. A family
rescued me from a
county shelter and
brought me home to be
part of their family. But
the other 4-legged
animals in the house
wanted no part of me.
I was very sad because I thought I now had regular playmates. I am about 6-years-old, less than 25 pounds and
still quite playful. I do get along with other pets, so if you
have another pooch in the house or just want to meet –
should we set up a play date?
(Call for a pre-adoption application and adoption fee info.)
◄Shhhh!
Puppies are
sleeping – well, at
least three of us
are! Our friends
didn’t want to
disturb us for
individual pictures
just yet. In this
photo we are just
7-weeks-old, but
by the time you
read this, Paw’s
Place will be accepting applications on us. We believe we are Schnauzer/Yorkie mix puppies. There are two females – Rain
and Star and two males – Paco and Chico. Our mom is
small at only 15 pounds, so we don’t think we are going to
be very big at all. We are just the cutest little ragamuffins!
Come out on to meet us and see for yourself.
◄I’m Nelson, one of a
litter of six Chihuahua
mix puppies (3 boys and
3 girls). I’m one of the
boys. At 12-weeks-old,
I am vaccinated, microchipped and neutered.
We are all playful, but
also love to snuggle.
We are a perfect size for
your lap! If you’re interested in me, come and
meet me at the kennel or
at a Meet & Greet first,
then you can fill out an
adoption application.
▲When you visit, ask for the “cute girl with the green
eyes.” That’s me, Maggie! I’m just 40 pounds, which
is a good size. I’m very affectionate with people and
some dogs, too! If you have another pet, let’s meet. A
fenced-in yard where we could play together would be
great. This summer I will have my third birthday. I
hope I’ll be celebrating it with my new family!
◄I’m a girl named
Hunter! Here’s how I
got my name: the kind
lady who found me
had nephews and because they saw that I
was a Hound and may
have been used for
hunting...you get the
idea. I’m housetrained, sweet, loving
and gentle. I also
have a lot of energy after all, I’m only
2-years-old. So, if
you have a family with
children and a nice big
fenced-in yard, let’s
get together real soon!
◄I’m Poppie, one of a
litter of six Chihuahua
mix puppies (3 boys
and 3 girls). I’m one of
the girls. At 12-weeksold, I am vaccinated,
microchipped and
spayed. All of us are
playful, but we also
love to take time out
and snuggle. We are
a perfect size for your
lap! If you are interested in me, come and
meet me at the kennel
or at a Meet & Greet
first, then you can fill out an adoption application.

My name is Pepper, and
I am extraordinary! What
makes me so special,
you ask? First of all, I am
one good-looking guy! I
am a handsome Black
Lab mix, 1 to 2-years-old,
medium size. The second reason I am extraordinary is that I am so
well-educated. I am a
Monty’s Home Pawsitive

dog. I am living in Pender Correctional Facility
and being trained by my
inmate trainers and volunteers from Monty’s Home. When I graduate on May 14th, I
will have doggy manners, know basic commands and a few
special tricks, and be able to walk with you nicely on a leash.
Of course, I am house-trained, neutered, and current on my
shots. I come home with a crate, food, toys, a leash - all the
necessary equipment! My third reason is that we need each
other! You need me to spice up your life and be your best
friend, and I need you to scratch my chin and toss my tennis
ball, my two favorite things in the whole world. For

No one expects me to
get very big because I
have very small feet. I
love all people and I love to play. I’m not a fan of felines, though, so my new home should be cat-free. I’m
cuddly and happy and ready to go home with you!

PawPrints Magazine’s 13th Annual Cover Model Search
The Judges’ Decisions Are In: Winning Cover Cat and Runners-Up
Winning Cover Cat
“Arthur”
Submitted by: David & Gina Blackwell
Arthur, affectionately known as Arty Jr., came to Carolina
Beach Animal Hospital after a client found him on the side of
the road in the middle of December 2014. Arthur’s temperature was extremely low; he had a respiratory infection, and
had intestinal worms. That was just the tip of the iceberg. He
had a severe injury to his right front leg and was unable to
move his wrist. We took an x-ray and he did not have any
broken bones. We discovered Arthur suffered from severe
nerve damage to his right front leg.
He was put on antibiotics and pain medications for his
respiratory infection and given lots of TLC. It was touch and
go for the first few days, but he slowly began to regain his
strength and started acting like a normal kitten. After a few
weeks, it was apparent that he would not regain normal function of his right front leg. Once he was strong enough, we
decided to amputate it. Arthur was fantastic after his surgery,
and within 24 hours, he was able to play harder than before!
Today, Arthur is a healthy, active kitten that loves to cuddle and play hard. His favorite hobbies include playing in his
cat tree, watching the birds and squirrels and playing with his
new best dog friend, Penny.
1st Runner-Up
“Jude”
Submitted by: Shannon Reed
This is Jude. Two years ago, three furry flea ridden balls
laid huddled close together under a shed in my grandparents
back yard with no mother to nurse from. My grandparents and
I waited for their mother to come and feed them, warm them,
and protect them. Eventually, the waiting got tiresome and we
got scared they would not survive. We knew we had to do
something. Since I was just a child they had saved many abandon kittens in the backyard of their country house. This time
was no different. I was home on vacation and going through a
rough time in my life so helping them save this litter was the
perfect distraction for me. Once the kittens were saved, the

Arthur has
certainly brightened our lives!
Whenever we are
feeling down, he is
there to offer a
good laugh or a
cuddle. Sometimes he’s sweet
and sometimes
he’s sour! Arthur
deserves to be a
cover model because of his ambitious kitty spirit;
willing to overcome all odds to
become a
spokeskitten for all the disabled animal brothers and sisters.
We knew Arthur was a special kitten the day we met him.
We decided to name him Arthur in honor of a sweet office
cat, which was a stray and had his left front leg amputated.
He was the most kind cat soul and Arthur Jr. embodies so
much of the original Arthur. He was definitely a tiny Christmas miracle that has brought joy to us and everyone at Carolina Beach Animal Hospital!
fleas were gone, and they were no longer malnourished I knew
my grandparents would take perfect care of them as they had
done so many times in the past. However, I still felt like I was
missing something. Since I was fourteen I have struggled with
manic depression and the world for me was a very dark place.
I felt scared and alone in life. Eventually, I met someone who
coaxed me out of sadness, but for the past two years he didn’t
do it alone. When my grandmother asked if I wanted to take
one back home with me tears filled my eyes. Their playful
meows comforted me and I agreed. It was a 4 hour car ride
home and my little fur baby still had no name. She cried for
the first half hour until her meows got worn down and harsh
sounding. I began to cry on the side of the road fearing she
would hate her new life with me. I began asking her questions
“What songs do you like? Do you like the Beatles?” I had
hoped so since that was the only CD I had. I popped it in and
began to pet her. She started to warm up to me and before I
knew it “Hey Jude” was playing and she was purring, falling
fast asleep in my lap (that’s how she got her name). Since that
drive I knew I would never have to face my days alone. I
would always have a soul to share things with. A soul to rub
her furry face against mine as if to say I’m here, I will always
be here. You see, I didn’t save Jude - Jude saved me. Jude
should be the 13th Annual Cover Model because she is not only
a symbol of strength, but of all good things in life, she is hope
and compassion but most importantly Jude is love.

him and that the shelter volunteers expected to take him back to the shelter to

Within a week of adopting him he

I adopted Jericho from Cat Tails the
weekend before Christmas 2014. I had
originally went to look at another kitten
that they had but we didn't click. As I
was walking away, I looked into one of
the other cages and saw this little Siamese mix kitten huddled in the back of
the cage while the other kittens in the
cage played and picked on him. I
asked the volunteer if I could see him
and she told me that he was still somewhat wild and that this was his first
adoption fair and that they hadn't had
him long. She told me that I probably
didn't want to hold him because he may
scratch me. I told her that was ok and I
understood the risk but still wanted to
see him. She got him out and as soon
as I held him I knew he was the one I
wanted. The volunteer told me she did
not expect him to get adopted anytime
soon let alone his first day at the adoption fair. Jericho has gone from a
frightened little kitten who was scared
to be touched to a loving spoiled little
boy who loves to tease the dog. Seeing
his transformation has shown me that

Ok, so I know what
you’re thinking as
you look at my picture. You’re thinking,
“Awwww, isn’t she
just precious!!!” Why
yes, yes I am precious! This, and my
owl-like eyes, is
exactly why I was
named Precious
Hoot by the CARE volunteers. I was outside all alone with
a broken hip and tail. No matter what has happened to me
in my past, my love for people has never faltered. I am
searching for a special someone to spend the rest of my
cat-tastic life with. I do require a little extra effort on your
part but it is pretty basic and I am certain my personality will
make you more than willing to accommodate my special
need. If you love cuddling near warm heaters in the winter,
gazing out the window at the big world, and kitties with
adorable little nub tails, then I think we’d be a match made
in heaven! If you enjoy playtime, especially with bird toys,
then that’s an extra plus! I know that a special person is
out there ready to love me. I can’t wait to meet them.

◄Hi y'all, my name is Gunner
and I am a purebred 20 pound
Feist. I was purchased for
hunting but was terrified at the
sound of the gun going off, so I
was surrendered to R.A.C.E. I
am energetic so if you like to
jog, I am the dog for you. I love
to play with other small dogs
but I am intimidated by big
dogs. I think I could get used to
it as my foster mom has been
working with me and I am doing
better. I love children and am
almost house-trained. The
curious thing about me is that I love to sit in your lap and you
cannot resist kissing my little head. I am such a lover!!
Enough bragging on me. Now, pick up the phone and call!
►Hi, it's me Sam. I am a
1-year-old Red Nose Pitbull and I weigh 60
pounds. My owners
moved away and left me
chained in the back yard
where I was attacked by
other dogs! All of my
wounds have healed and
I am ready for my forever
home. I am living with a
trainer who has taught me
my good manners. I also live with another Pit and we play all
day long. I am crate-trained and house-trained along with
being fully vetted. I love to take walks and ride in the car. I
wagged my tail so much it became infected and it had to be
amputated. R.A.C.E. does not practice docking or cropping
but in this case the tail had died and it was a health issue.
◄My name is
Huey and I am a
6-year-old Feist.
I weighed 12
pounds when
R.A.C.E. took me
in but my foster
mom has fed me
well and now I
weigh 16 pounds.
I was found as a
stray and no one
ever claimed me.
I love to play with
other dogs and I love children. I am an active little guy so walks
and dog parks would be ideal. I do have heartworms and have
started my treatment, so all you need to do is give me a monthly
ivermectin pill which R.A.C.E. provides and pays for. Please
call 910-579-0407 or visit us on the web at raceshelter.org for
more information on adopting me.
►Hello, it's me again Max. I
have been featured in several issue of PawPrints
Magazine and I would really
love to find my furrever
home. I guess I keep getting
passed by because I am a
senior at 13-years of age,
but I am such an easy, calm
guy. I love to take walks and
then I like to rest. I am good
with most other dogs and
love people. I would be a
perfect companion. My foster parents adore me but
they travel a lot. I weigh 65
pounds and I am cratetrained and house-trained. Maybe we could work out a
deal where R.A.C.E. pays my bills and you love and take
care of me. If you are interested, lets talk. Call today or
visit us online at raceshelter.org.
◄Hey there, I'm
Sal, short for Sally
Jo. I am a Labrador Retriever and
Shar Pei mix and if
I may say so myself, quite pretty. I
am 5-years-old and
find myself homeless because my
owner died. I do
fine with other dogs
but I had a bad
experience with a
cat, so I don't like
them. If you have another dog that is fine with me. I do
have heartworms but R.A.C.E. will pay for the slow treatment method. I really am a smart, sweet girl.
◄My name is Lassie. I
don't quite look like the
real Lassie but I am as
sweet and smart. They
believe I am part Border
Collie as I have a red and
white coat and am about
the right size. I was taken
out of the shelter because
I was very scared with all
the barking going on.
When I first meet you, I
may be a little shy but I will warm up to you quickly. I am
40 pounds, I love other dogs, and I’m house-trained and
crate-trained. I have heartworms but I’ve had my initial
treatment and R.A.C.E. will pay for all expenses related
to that. Please choose me!

There is enough of my
Sweetness to go around.
Get what I did there?
“Sweetness” because I am
Sweetie…Okay, I will stop
kidding around. I am looking for just the right person
to pet me, clean my litter
box and cater to my every
need. I would really appreciate it if you have
some kids because then
there are more hands to
pet me and often some
crumbs on the floor for me
to gobble up. You don’t
have to worry about brushing my teeth after meals because I don’t have any. But that
won’t stop me from snagging any morsel, hard or soft, that I
can find. My age, well, I may be about 7-years but I feel
young like a spring kitten and I’m healthy as a horse. Call
910-256-2624 to see if I am willing to accept your accommodations. And if we’re not the right fit? No worries, I
have some feline friends at CARE that might be for you.

Private Instruction Available
Well, hello everybody! My name is
Stella, reporting to
you from the plush
accommodations of
my very own bedroom next to the
SOAR office. I lost
my human, so a
friend of hers who
was temporarily
taking care of me
brought me here to
SOAR. I am very
friendly and eager
to be someone
else’s best friend
again. I want to be
an ‘indoor only’ girl
– that is what I am
used to, as I am declawed on my front paws. It wouldn’t be
safe for me to be outside. Won’t you stop by and see me?
For driving directions or more information, please call
SOAR at 910-457-6340.
I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of
all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely
to the Rainbow Bridge.
SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue)
Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us!
◄I’m a
loving,
beautiful
and sweet
Shepherd
mix girl
named
Layla! I'm
just 2½years-old
and unfortunately my
mom got
sick and
couldn't keep me anymore. But I'm house-trained (with a doggie door), I walk well on a leash and I’d love a fenced-in yard
at my new home. I love to give puppy kisses, too!
►Well,
here I am,
Chub, but
I’m afraid
I am not
exactly
living up to
my name,
as it actually wouldn’t hurt me
to put on a
pound or
two (I
weigh 40 or so right now). I am an easy-going Lab/Plott
Hound mix and my best buddy is Sonny, pictured next to
me. We are living in kennels right next door to each other
and we hope double good fortune might be coming our way
soon. Come on over and get to know both of us!
►Hello there!
I am an extremely
affectionate Hound
named Gus. I love to
play and be with
people and other
dogs. I’m currently in
a wonderful foster
home where they take
me for walks around
Southport. I also enjoy going to adoption
fairs and meeting new
people. It’s quite a
mystery why a sociable, family-friendly boy
like me hasn’t been
adopted. I’m a gem,
ready and waiting!
▲Talk about a lovey dovey! Oh my!! My name is Caesar
and I am such a baby! I love to roll around and show off
my belly. I also love ear rubs. I’m a neutered, orange
Tabby boy, approximately 4-years-old. Adopt me and I’ll
show you just how affectionate and loving a cat can be!
◄Hiya folks,
Sonny here.
I was totally
lost when an
Animal Protective Services
officer picked
me up and,
before I knew
it, some nice
SOAR people
whisked me
away in their
van with my
buddy, Chub (pictured next to me). I am a handsome,
young, red and white Pit Bull weighing 35-40 pounds. I’ve
been leash-training while making lots of new friends here
at SOAR. Hope you have time to pay me a visit!
▲My name is Prince and I’m a medium-haired furr-ball.
I’m simply beautiful - orange and white with the prettiest
plume of a tail! I’m just a tad bit shy at first, but when I warm
up - watch out! I am a love bug! I came in with my brother
Caesar, pictured at top, but we do not have to be adopted
together. I’m around 4-years-old and ready to go home!

Please give me a
chance! My name is
Wesley and I have
been in foster care for
almost a year. I am a
beautiful and muscular
2-year-old Pit mix and
for some reason, that
seems to prevent a lot
of people from wanting
to get to know little ole
me. I really love humans great and small,
you can tell that when
they come over to my
crate week after week
to pet me, but then
they turn to the cute
little puppies and begin filling out an application for them. I am
capable of great warm emotion when it comes to people, all I
need is for you to give me a chance. I love to run and chase
balls, and I am crazy about big old chewing bones. I am better
behaved when I am sufficiently exercised but I love me some
snuggling on the couch in exchange for kisses. And best of all, I
am old enough you will not need to potty-train me, so no accidents on the floor. In addition, I am happy and healthy and I’m
heartworm negative and up to date on shots. Please be that
special family who overlooks the puppies and pick me. For information, please contact Janet with Columbus Humane Society
by emailing [email protected] or by calling 910-499-1148.
I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in
Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!
I'm Gray, a 15-yearold, declawed girl and
this is my 10-year-old
sister, Cheeky, pictured below. We're
pretty Tabby and
white cats who were
the much loved pets of
a couple who passed
away within one years
time. Now we need to
find a new home. We
can be adopted together or separately.
We're affectionate,
quiet girls who are
both spayed and up to
date on vaccinations
and we love to be
brushed. The vet
says that we're in
great shape, so we
have many good
years ahead of us.
Would you let us
share them with you?
If you would like to
adopt one or both of
us, please call Pet
Friends of Duplin County at 910-285-4155.
We are sponsored in appreciation of everyone who
has rescued a homeless animal.

Save lives…please spay or neuter your pets!
You’re looking for a
cute girl with a little
bit of spunk and
playfulness? That’s
me! I'm Chloe, a
1-year-old Calico
female. I'm a sweet
and friendly kitty
who can also be a
talker sometimes. I'll
let you know when I
am in the mood to
chat. I like receiving
attention and being
petted, but I'm not
the type that likes to
be held much. If
you're ready for fun
times and sweet
affection, please
consider adopting
me. I've been
spayed, vaccinated, and am litterbox-trained. I'll be waiting for you at the adoption center at Petsmart in Wilmington. You can also call Cat Adoption Team at 910-7929014 for more information.
Ch-ch-ch-chchanges. My
name is Bowie
and I’ve had
some pretty big
changes in my

I was abandoned

me from being the

playful guy I was
meant to be. I
love to be rubbed
and will lift my
head up to nuzzle
into your hand.
I’m a 1-year-old

nice guy. If you
can provide me
with love and lots of kitty toys, let’s make this adoption happen. If you would like to know more about me or inquire

Come Walk & Support a Pet-Friendly
Domestic Violence Shelter!
Families First is holding it's 5th Annual PAWS Dog
Walk. PAWS stands for Pet And Women Shelters and is
a national initiative to bring awareness to the connections
between domestic violence and animal abuse. Locally, the
PAWS Walk helps Families First fund its pet-friendly program in its domestic violence shelter.
Many shelters do not accept pets, and many families
will not leave their pet behind in an abusive household.
Statistically 85% of women and 63% of children seeking
shelter from domestic violence report animal abuse in the
home. Since Families First opened its doors it has sheltered animal family members as well as the human ones.
The PAWS Walk raises funds to
maintain kennels, pay for food, medications, and veterinary services when
needed.
If you and your dog would like to
help, the PAWS Walk is Saturday, May
2 starting at 9:30am at Families First's
advocacy office located in downtown
Whiteville at 121 West Main Street. Registration is $20
per human and includes a PAWS Walk T-shirt and a dog
leash. If you have questions or would like to register,
visit www.familiesfirstnc.org/paws or call 910-642-5996.
Come Celebrate Ruby Bo’s Day
On May 1-3, celebrate Ruby Bo’s Day Weekend at
Ruby Tuesday Restaurant located at 5218 South College
Road in Monkey Junction. Bo is a 14-year-old dog with
the number 110 tattooed on his underside from where he
lived his life in a puppy mill. He was turned in to Animal
Control as “a stray.” He was then rescued by Adopt-anANGEL and adopted by a kind woman in spite of his age
and medical conditions. In celebration of their relationship and Bo’s new life, it is now Ruby Bo’s Day the first
weekend of every month at Ruby Tuesday in Monkey
Junction. So, May 1-3, eat out for lunch or dinner at this
great restaurant and a portion of the proceeds will
be donated to Adopt-anANGEL in honor of Bo.
Bo was adopted by the
manager’s mom (pictured

info, call 910-392-0557.
Russell Rescue, Inc. (RRI, a
501c3 non-profit) is a national
network of volunteers dedicated
to placing unwanted, displaced
or abandoned Jack Russell Terriers into permanent homes.
All dogs entering rescue are
either temporarily placed in a
foster home or must remain with their owners until a suitable home can be found. Foster space is limited and foster
homes are in short supply!
The Carolinas Region is headquartered in the Wilmington area and the rescue is in need of wonderful homes for
rescued Terriers! The rescue provides all vetting for each
Terrier. Please visit www.russellrescue.com/volunteer to

Musical Comedy Concert Benefits CAT
On Saturday, May 2, at 4pm,
pianist Barry David Salwen will attempt to play a recital to benefit the
Cat Adoption Team (CAT), a nonprofit cat rescue organization in Wilmington, NC. The Event will take
place at Beckwith Recital Hall, Cultural Arts Building, UNCW.
Salwen’s efforts to entertain may
be hampered by a determined page turner, intent on capturing the limelight.
The program will feature non-standards, among them
“Ode to the Lost Lamb” for Voice and Piano, “Sort of Für
Elise” with apologies to Beethoven, and “The Entertainer
(Modified Without Permission)” by Scott Joplin. Yankee
Doodle may also be lurking somewhere on the program.
Other music will probably proceed remarkably well, when
the page turner is enticed off the stage with a pizza.
Tickets are $12 and can be purchased in advance by calling 910-799-8682 or online at catabove.com/catbeco.html,
or at the door, starting 30 minutes before the event.
Dr. Salwen, normally a serious Associate Professor of
Music at UNCW, will lend a hand (or two) to make this a
successful fundraiser. Dr. Salwen, who has played concerts
worldwide, holds Doctor, Master, and Bachelor of Music
degrees from The Juilliard School. He also holds a Diploma
with Highest Honors from the Vienna Academy of Music,
Austria, where he studied under a Fulbright fellowship.
Page Turner Tamar Gilad, when not creating musical
mayhem on stage, teaches piano, works as an independent
management consultant, tends to her online cat products
business, and volunteers with the Cat Adoption Team.

Puppy
My name is Puppy. I’m 1-year-old and have a best friend
named Bean. Have you ever had a best friend? Then you
must know how important Bean is to me. Bean is 3-yearsold and I look up to him. Wherever he goes, I go! Maybe it
seems strange to you because I'm a Poodle and he's a
Pitbull, but it's not strange to me! At the shelter, when we
were turned in, they tried to separate us but Bean was very
sad and then he got sick. Carolina Poodle Rescue came
to get us so we are back together! Now we are happy and
having a lot of fun, so we must have a home that will take
both of us. Bean is kind of goofy. People say he's a gentle giant. Like me, Bean's full of energy. We'd love to go
to puppy school! We are both smart and would like learning things. The home we dream of finding would be one
where Bean and I are the only two dogs. Why? Because
we will need a lot of attention, play time, and exercise. We
like other large dogs just fine but things would be easier if it
was just us. We can't be in a home with cats and we don't
know how we feel about kids. We definitely need a fenced
in yard and supervision! Bean knows how to escape and,
of course, I follow him since we go everywhere together.
Both Bean and I unfortunately have tested lightly positive
for heartworms. We have begun the slow kill method treatment. This means we will be given a heartworm preventative once a month and the worms will eventually die off.
Other than this, Bean and I are healthy, happy boys! To
learn more about us, call 864-489-3559 or go to our
website at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org.

CAROLINAS RUSSELL RESCUE
Zzzzz...my name is Jimmy and, boy, do I have a story to tell! Except, I am kind of shy
as my past life was not great at all. I came to rescue last year and was scared to even
go near a human. I was afraid they would hit or kick me! But my foster mommy was
awesome, and she taught me that not all humans are bad. I recently moved to Wilmington to look for my forever home after my foster mom and the rescue felt I had come out
of my shell enough to enjoy life! It took me a week in my new home to even come out of
my crate, but now I am FREE! I love running in the house with my duck in my mouth,
peanut butter kongs, chasing my foster sibling Jack Russells, and warm fluffy beds. I
am still skittish around loud noise, voices, or sudden movements but I would never think
of biting. I am around 5-years-old, house-trained perfectly, never mess in my crate,
have all my vaccines, and am neutered. I am constantly on the move so I would fit best in an active family. I am not sure
about men yet, but I LOVE the ladies! Are you ready for me? To adopt me, call Carolinas Russell Rescue at 910-821-3504
and leave a message or you can send an email to [email protected].
CAROLINA POODLE RESCUE
My name is Blair. I lived with my Poodle sister for many years with our owner who
loved us but because our owner became ill, I'm looking for another home. My sister and
I were turned in to a shelter but Carolina Poodle Rescue pulled us out. Now, we both
live at the farm while we wait for a new person or family to find us. I am a sweet girl - on
the quiet side. My ideal home would be one with soft beds, long walks, and a person or
people who want a companion for quieter activities. I'm 11 but have so much love left to
give. In case you didn't now, Poodles are known to be long-lived. Wouldn't my face be
a nice one to see at the end of a day when you are tired from work? I would be keeping
the sofa warm for you! If you are interested in adopting me or would like to know more
about my sister (Bali), please call 864-489-3559. We can be adopted individually or as a
pair. For more info, you may also check our website at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org.
SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS
My name is Stanley, and I was found curled up in a ball at a local animal
shelter, trying to hide from everyone and everything. The neglect I had suffered was obvious, yet after I spent some time with SRC volunteers who gave
me love and attention, I blossomed! I was also groomed, which made me
and everyone else smile! I am going to be a great family companion now
that I’ve learned to trust. My wonderful foster parents have given me selfconfidence and my personality is shining. I am heartworm negative, housetrained, neutered, vaccinated and I’m friendly to other dogs. I’ve not been
cat-tested. To read more about me and fill out an application, visit
www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. Please call 919-723-7145 if you
need an application mailed or faxed. P.S. Mention this ad in
PawPrints and get a 10% discount on my adoption donation!
CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE
My name is Sugar Pie Honey Bunch, but you can call me Honey – a simply delightful, middle-aged lady from Eastern NC. Despite my hard knock past, I’m a
consummate Basset optimist! I was homeless and raiding trash cans for food, but
now I’m found – CBHR saved me! I need to bend your ear for a second though
and discuss my ear…unfortunately the doctors are going to have to work on it a
little bit, but don’t you fret none – I promise when I’m all fixed up I will listen to you
just as good as I would have with a perfect ear – Basset’s honor! We Bassets take
our “listening” seriously! And if you buy that…I’ve got a lovely ocean front cottage
in Arizona where we can summer together! I’m looking to make up for lost time –
I’m talking belly rubs, treats - the whole nine yards. I’ve got plans – BIG plans! To
make me a member of your family, please call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

Adoption Celebration
46 www.PawPrintsMagazine.com May 2015
Hey! Would you like to live with me? My name is Daisy
and I'm only 9-months-old. I'm a lovely black and white kitty
who reminds everyone of "Daisy" the cow. Three siblings
and I went up for adoption. My sisters and brother got
adopted, but I didn't like being in a cage - and it showed. I
returned to my foster home where I love to follow my foster
mom and dad around and sit in their laps. The other cat
members of the family are jealous, and that's why I need a

Hi! My name is
Simon and I am
an energetic
Corgi and Shepherd mix who is
looking for a
forever home! I
need a family
who can provide
me regular exercise and direction on what is
expected of me.
I have completed
doggie 'boot
camp' to receive
some additional
training and
structure to my
routine. My
bags are packed and I’m ready to go to my new home!
I'll be ready to provide you hours of entertainment and
companionship. Please contact my guardians with
RescueConnect by visiting www.rescueconnectnc.com
or calling 910-302-7290.
I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange
in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!
