ALONSO ’NHAMIN
MONZA BONANZA
By Adam CAINE at Monza
FERNANDO ALONSO and
Lewis Hamilton teamed
up to give Ferrari a slap in
their own backyard.
Double world champion
Alonso took pole at the Italian Grand Prix with Brit
sensation Hamilton joining
him on the front row for a
McLaren one-two.
It was a bitter blow for
championship rivals Ferrari at their home race.
Surprise
Alonso clocked a fastest
lap of one minute 21.997
seconds, just 0.037sec ahead
of Hamilton.
Ferrari's Felipe Massa
was third with German
Nick Heidfeld a surprise
fourth in his BMW Sauber.
Spaniard Alonso, whose
last pole was in Monaco
back in May, said: “I’ve
had many seconds this year
and finally a pole. The car
is extremely quick here and
hopefully we can do the
real job and finish ahead of
everybody.”
Hamilton, 22 - who leads
Alonso by five points with
five races to go - said: “It
was a good battle out there.
“It’s the fifth time we have
the front row locked out.
Hopefully we can repeat
that in the race.”
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen
will start from fifth after
escaping unhurt from a
150mph crash in practice.

Randy Moss
TROUBLED New England Patriots
wide receiver Randy Moss insists
he will be on his best behaviour
this season, which starts tonight.
When with Minnesota Vikings
and Oakland Raiders, Moss got in
trouble for squirting a referee
with water, walking off before
the end of a loss while his teammates were still on the pitch,
mooning opposing fans and
GRIDIRON by NEIL REYNOLDS
admitting he didn’t try his best in
some games.
His off-season move to the
Patriots stunned the NFL. The
Patriots are led by no-nonsense
head coach Bill Belichick, and
their team of model pros has won
three Super Bowls in the past six
years. Moss, seen as the most
electrifying receiver in the game,
has made a good impression on his
new team-mates in pre-season.
Ahead of tonight’s AFC East
meeting with the New York Jets he
said: ‘‘I’m enthusiastic about my
new team. I want to bring back the
old Randy Moss – making plays
and reeling in catches.’’
The Patriots – losers at the Super
Bowl semi-final stage last season
– are the favourites this season
after boosting their squad with
Moss, fellow wide receivers Donte
Stallworth and Wes Welker, and
outstanding linebacker Adalius
Thomas, who boasts a sprinter’s
speed despite weighing in at more
than 18 stones.
