The 2016 Red Books are in. We donated 24 hard
covers to the Palm Beach County Library System.
The red books are $8 for the soft cover and $9
for the hard cover. Club shirts are still available
at $21 in L, XL, and XXL. See Tony.
There are only three more meetings before the
bus trip to Summer FUN on Friday, July 10th at
7AM leaving from the same place, now known as
Family Church, 855 Jog Road, on the northwest
corner of Jog & Summit Blvd. There is a $10
refundable deposit per member. See Tony. We
have a 57 seat bus with plenty of room. This is a
same day trip, returning about 8PM. All club
members and their family can go. New people must
be club members.
The club picnic was Saturday, May 16th at John
Prince Park, Lake Worth. We had good weather,
too much food, and a record attendance of 69
people. We ate at noon and it was over by 2PM. At
the May 13th meeting, Juan Riera gave an
informative talk on “Treasures of the Spanish
Empire”. May 27th, Buddy Hirsh and Tony Swicer
gave a talk on personal “Interesting Coin Stories
of the 1970’s thru 1990’s”.
The FUN Adult scholarship deadline is August
1st. You must be a member of FUN for at least
one year to enter. No one entered last year, so no
one went to the ANA Summer Seminar, all
expenses paid. The application is in FUN Topics.
Club membership is back to 302 with about 56
delinquents.

76th Annual Central States Convention
Schaumburg, IL - April22-25, 2015
FUN had a table once again at the Central States
Convention NW of Chicago. Cindy Wibker, Gary
Braisted, and I arrived on Wednesday morning. It
was dealer-only day and we set up our table. The
temperature outside was 36 degrees. During the
week, temperatures ranged from 32 to 50 degrees
with some rain, especially all day Saturday. Public
attendance seemed a little light, especially on
Saturday. I would estimate attendance at 1500-2000.
There were about 285 dealer tables. FUN was in
the front right with the ten other club tables. The
exhibit area had 38 exhibitors with 55 exhibits.
There were 215 exhibit cases. “Best of Show” went
to Nancy Wilson for “Santa Claus Obsolete Notes &
Vignettes”. The People’s Choice Award went to Robert
Feiler for “Not Attila the Hun, but the Thrill of the
Hunt”. Cindy and I both judged exhibits. Gary and I
took the ANA Exhibit Judge Certification Course
administered by ANA Chief Judge Joe Boling. We
both passed, Gary in US Coins and me in US Paper
Money. Only 30-40% pass on the first try. We
attended the exhibitors & judges dinner and the
awards breakfast. CSNS always does an outstanding
job on their exhibits.
There were seven programs with the Civil War
theme, six new book signings, and nine other
programs and specialty club meetings. The ANA
Exhibit Judge Certification Course was offered twice
to anyone interested in certifying as an ANA exhibit
judge.
Cindy covered all of the dealer tables by Friday
afternoon. We picked up several table sales for FUN
and gave out candy and lots of information about the
upcoming FUN shows. Both the Renaissance Hotel and
Convention Center are first class. The hotel shuttle
took you to any restaurant within a three mile radius
and picked you up, free. We left late Saturday. I got
home at 1AM and got up for our monthly coin show at
5AM.
It was a good show for us (FUN), we got a lot
accomplished and we all had a good time.

Here is another interesting trivia question Carole
found on the How-To Geek website at
http://howtogeek.com.
Banknotes Originated In Which Country?
a. Britain
b. China
c. India
d. Russia
Answer: b. China
Long before Europeans were using printed
currency, and even longer before sophisticated
printing presses were running in the New World,
the Chinese were happily using paper money.
During the 7th century Tang Dynasty, the
precursor of paper money appeared when
merchants began using a system of receipts to
alleviate the need to transport heavy coinage
between warehouses and stores. By the 11th
century, during the Song Dynasty, the government
realized the utility of centralizing the production of
these promissory notes and extending their use
beyond the merchant class.
By the end of 13th century, the Chinese currency
system had evolved to closely resemble what would
be the standard for paper-based currencies for
many centuries to come. The paper currency was
backed by gold and silver reserves, printed in no
less than six ink colors, used intricate designs, and
it was sometimes made of special paper with
embedded fibers to avoid counterfeiting.
