Orchestra Director
Dr. Scott McCormick
Langley High School
Dr. McCormick (aka ”Doc” to his
students) is in his 12th year of teaching with
the Fairfax County Public school system as
director of the orchestral program at Langley.
Originally from Canada, he completed his
B.M. at the University of Western Ontario and his M.M. and D.M. in
Performance and Literature from Indiana University. He was recently
invited to join the music faculty at Patrick Henry College, where he serves as
an adjunct professor of music theory and instructional music. He also
performs as a violist with the Washington Bach Consort and has played with a
number of period instrument ensembles in the D.C. area.
Dr. McCormick is a contributor to new research in the historical
performance practice of music of Baroque era. He specializes in the
performance of the viola d’amore, an unusual baroque instrument with
sympathetic strings. An excerpt of his doctoral thesis ‘Pur al fin Gentil Viola’
was published in the Newsletter of the Viola d’Amore Society of America.
One of his performances, from the National Gallery in Ottawa with members
of the Canadian group Tafelmusik, was broadcast nationally by CBC radio.
He has also performed as a viola d’amore soloist with the Richmond
Symphony, with the Penn State University Baroque Orchestra, and for the
annual National Cathedral performance of Bach’s St. John Passion.
Dr. McCormick, and his wife Rebekah are founders of the Second Fiddle
Farm, a 12-acre facility in Loudoun County, which is home to two horses,
three sheep, and seven chickens. Their spunky five-year-old daughter,
Norah, and younger brother, Hugh, keep Doc and Rebekah filled with joy
when he is not teaching his Langley Orchestra students.
Orchestra Director
Ms. Bo-Min Son
Langley High School
Freshman
Ms. Bo-Min Son, a proud alumna of Cooper MS and Langley HS,
graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University with a Bachelor of
Music and is currently working towards her Masters in Music Education at
George Mason University. Ms. Son started her music training early on the
piano, but decided that the cello was her choice of instrument at the age of
11. Since then, she has held principal roles in American Youth Philharmonic,
Boston University Chamber Orchestra and was a fellow member of National
Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellowship Program, where she received a full
scholarship to pursue her musical training. She also performed and featured as
a soloist at multiple venues such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall and
Kennedy Center. She obtained numerous awards from a number of
competitions including a Grand Prize from the Third International New Praise
for Piano and Strings. She has participated in master classes with Alban
Gerhardt, Paul Katz, Norman Fisher and Joshua Gordon. Her principal
teachers include Dorothy Amarandos, Glenn Garlick of National Symphony
Orchestra and Marc Johnson, formerly with Vermeer Quartet.
Busy maintaining her career as a cellist, conductor and educator, Ms. Son
currently directs and oversees over 200 secondary strings students daily at
Cooper Middle School and Langley High School in McLean, VA. In addition
to teaching, Ms. Son enjoys being a music coach in the community and has a
thriving private cello studio that includes a wide range of students. She
continues to sustain her love for playing the cello by performing in the
McLean Orchestra. When she’s not playing or teaching, she loves to travel.

Song Parody from Rome Trip
Orchestra Seniors, Class of 2013
Lyrics by Alexa Tavassoli, Alexandra Fraley, and Darcy Davidson
Sing to the tune of Mambo Number 5 by Lou Bega,1, 2, 3/8 time
Seconds can't count but they can rhyme
To the beat of the bumpin' cellos
The basses can play but they really don't wanna.
Broken chairs at the concert last night
Double encores giving Doc a fright.
I like Doc, Ms. Son, Amico, Francescos.
They're better than Michelangelo’s frescoes.
What else can we do? We don't wanna leave here.
If we can't stay in Rome then we will be shedding tears.
Everything’s great, it’s all good, I will party
With all these Italians.
When you gotta go somewhere today
You'd better bring a buddy on your way.
Or else you'll get in trouble there's no doubt.
And if you disagree, well you can't pout.
And if you wanna hear some good advice
You'd better keep in mind rule number five.
Don't you dare look at Italian men
But if you did you'd rate them ten.
We want something sweet out on the town.
While eating gelato we never frown.
In flavors in U.S. you never see.
Any more delicious it could not be.
So finally it’s evening, dinner time.
We're gonna have some pizza, that sounds fine.
But there really isn't quite enough.
They're working real hard but we're so tough.
We just love to watch movies like Zoolander too
And we can’t compare to Doc’s awesome hair
Doc and Son will lead us on!
