We had over 230 competitors and 95+ volunteers. We added a new Corporate Cup division, with 9 teams competing for their business. We had two teams compete in the Triathlon that were alumni from our most recent Fit to Fight session. It is truly inspiring to have our alumni competing in the event showing their strength after battling cancer. As in years past, there were plenty of first timers. The first time triathletes are the most fun to follow on the course as they always seem to have a bundle of nerves at the start to an overwhelming sense of accomplishment at the finish line. Lastly, we had a new course record set by Dylan Gillespie, tearing through the course in 52:44. The proceeds of over $6000 from this Triathlon go directly to Fit to Fight and help us offer our three yearly, free sessions for folks that are battling or recently battled cancer. The sport was invented in the back yard of a Seattle Congressman in 1965 out of a lowered badminton net, a Wiffle ball, and wooden paddles. Pickleball combines elements of both tennis and ping-pong. Popularity has exploded in recent years as it’s a great way to connect with people, be physically active and great for all ages and athletic ability levels. MIND AND BODY FITNESS Stephanie Peabody, Mind and Body Director By Mike Rankin, Downtown Fitness Director Stress by definition is “pressure or tension exerted on an object.” Short term stress is normal and healthy; like the stress we feel going into a job interview. Long term or chronic stress can lead to severe health problems. Common symptoms of long term stress include: headaches, stiff neck, shoulders and back pain from muscle tension, shallow breathing, fast and irregular heartbeat, changes in blood pressure, upset stomach and problematic skin conditions. The good news, you can manage long term stress by learning healthy coping mechanisms. Many stress relief techniques focus on relaxing your body and mind. Techniques such as meditation, guided imagery, exercise, muscle stretching and relaxation, breathing exercises and massage are all great ways to help manage stress. Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates classes combine exercise with stretching, deep breathing, meditation and relaxation. Foam rolling is incorporated into many of our complimentary Mat Pilates and Yoga classes to help with muscle tension. It wasn’t something my family or I worried about regularly. When I was little, I was pretty active. I played outside and was in martial arts from 7-14 yrs old. When I was 9, I started putting on weight and it kept increasing despite my activity level. This continued all through high school and I was at my heaviest in 2010 at a rather rotund 315 lbs. During this time, I had seen my parents’ and relative’s health decline. None of them were obese, but many were overweight. News of heart disease and cancer was “normal” in our family. I decided in August 2010, I had enough and wanted to get healthy. I always had a knack for learning physiology and anatomy, so I read all I could about nutrition, exercise, and behavior. I started working out with kettlebells after purchasing a book by Pavel Tsatsouline. I started weight training and running, including a few 5k’s. At the start of 2012, I was at my lightest at 165 lbs. This was a “healthy” weight for my height, but I come from a long line of thick boned, barrel-chested Germans so I didn’t have much in the way of muscle mass. I started barbell training with an “old school” program from the 50’s. It was hard, but it worked and I put on a considerable amount of muscle; I’m now about 207 lbs. After moving to Missoula from South Dakota in October 2014, I switched to Olympic-style weightlifting, which consists of the snatch and clean and jerk lifts. In February of this year, I received my NSA certification as a personal trainer. Through my own struggles, I understand the issues associated with becoming healthy and getting stronger. I’m eager to help others on their journey to a new and healthy lifestyle. AQUATICS By Stephanie Potter, Aquatics Director Summer Senior Olympics The 30th Annual Montana Summer 2015 Senior Olympics are right around the corner. The Senior Games are for people ages 50 and over; and there is no residency requirement to participate in the Olympics. The 2015 Games will be held June 18-20, 2015 in Helena, MT. There are 13 events including swimming & Pickleball. This year, it is anticipated that there will be over 300 athletes. Athletes are required to provide their own equipment and transportation. Last year, several PEAK members along with Adult Swim Coach, Lucy Keller went to the Senior Olympics where several broke records in their swimming events! They had such a wonderful time last year; we anticipate 5 or 6 PEAK members along with Coach Lucy will participate again this year. Good luck Olympians! EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Mike Rankin Personal Trainer and Fitness Director, Downtown Since 2008 Mike’s 11 year old daughter, Mikelann, keeps Mike on his toes. She is very busy with many equestrian and Taekwondo events. “It’s hard juggling my work and her school and activities. Like most people, scheduling everything is tough.” He and his ex-wife, have a good relationship and are a united front raising Mikelann. They go to all her events and both families spend holidays together. As a former University of Montana Griz linebacker, and dedicated personal trainer, Mike understands her work ethic and competiveness. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Luke Forsythe PEAK Member Since 2007 Morning is the most valued time of the day for Luke Forsythe. He makes breakfast for his boys, Kaleb 11 and Kaden 7, while wife, Crystal, gets ready for work. As an engineer for MRL, Luke works 24-36 hour shifts, getting home around 3 am. He says the toughest part about being a dad is, “getting enough sleep and balancing responsibilities.” However, he feels getting up early to connect with the boys is worth it. Luke has coached various sports the boys have been involved, including baseball and soccer. He likes to introduce them to new activities and often brings them to The PEAK to shoot hoops or swim. As a dad, he says, “I most enjoy watching their accomplishments. They both make me proud every day.” When the boys conquer a personal challenge or fear, he is especially proud. An achievement that he shares with the boys is participating in Spartan Races. For the last two years, Luke has competed in the Spartan Sprint and both boys have finished the Spartan Kids Race. The boys have also inspired him to stop bad habits, like chewing tobacco. He knew it was unhealthy and didn’t want them to think it was okay. “You have to live by example.
