Look at our giant dinosaur footprints and tracks. Battle of the Dinosaurs Reception 1 and Reception 2/Year 1 have been exploring the historical and scientific world of dinosaurs, including how they lived, when they lived and how they behaved and interacted with other dinosaurs. They took part in a ‘Dino Hunt’, following maps and plans to find examples of hidden ‘dinosaur treasures’ such as a dinosaur footprint, a giant claw, a dinosaur nest with a giant egg, and a baby dinosaur. They have been making marks and drawings using a variety of dinosaur stencils, chalks, crayons, pencils, and pens. They have used the small world dinosaurs to create habitats such as caves and a volcano, using a range of natural materials such as logs, stones, leaves, rocks and twigs. Reception 1 and Reception 2/Year 1 became archaeologists, digging and searching for bones and fossils. They have also enjoyed role playing in the dinosaur nest, waiting for the ‘eggs’ to hatch. They have made salt dough dinosaurs of different shapes and sizes. They have sorted dinosaurs by their features such as size, shape, teeth, defences and so on. They have looked at and played with pictures and toy dinosaurs, talking about their names and characteristics such as those that fly, those that swim, those with long/short tails, armour, claws, teeth, and horns. They have enjoyed joining in with stories, poems and rhymes about dinosaurs; such as ‘Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs’, ‘Dinosaur Roar’ and ‘Dinosaurs Love Underpants’. They have looked at actions and sounds that might make the stories more exciting to listen to. Reception 1 and Reception 2/Year 1 have been enjoying Fresh air Friday…a day dedicated to the outdoors! We go home needing a bath! We made fossil mud pies! We went on a dinosaur numbered egg hunt. We collected natural materials to make dinosaur nests for the eggs. Community Explorers Year 1 children have been learning about their local community, Pembrey. They noticed that they have a local post office and thought it might be fun to make a post office of their very own in their classroom. They have been role playing the Mail Deliverer, the Cashier or the Customer and have been having lots of fun, writing letters and posting them, buying stamps, sorting coins and practising lots of the other important skills we need to work in a post office. They went for a walk around the local area and noticed that all the house numbers on one side of Ashburnham road are odd and all the numbers on the opposite side of the road are even. They went back to their classroom and did lots of work on odd and even numbers. During the walk around Pembrey, they practised their ICT skills on the iPads and digital cameras by taking lots of photographs of the important buildings and features in the local community. They then created their own maps of Pembrey, to use with the Beebots. Using the maps, they worked in pairs to give their partner instructions on how to move the Beebot to the different places in Pembrey. In PE Year 1 children have been developing their strength and coordination through Gymnastics. They have learned lots of different ways to travel and some still shapes too. They then show how much they have learned on the large apparatus. The millipede tickled our hands! Would you touch it? Sut wyt ti heddiw? We looked at odd and even numbers… Mini Zoo This term, Year 2 have been learning about different habitats. Sue from Folly Farm came to visit and taught them about animal habitats. They played a game all about the tropical rainforest, deciduous forest, the savannah and the desert. She brought a few different animals to show, such as a millipede, an African snail, a toad, scorpions and a tortoise. They were allowed to hold some, but not the scorpions! The giant millipede was very wriggly and tickled their hands. Year 2 visited Folly Farm to see giraffes, camels, penguins and more. They said that the bearded dragon was hard and rough to touch. They loved the new penguin enclosure and enjoyed watching the penguins dive into the water and playing with their friends. Every penguin had a name and a coloured tag, so that you can recognise them from the board. Since their visit to the farm, Year 2 children have been learning lots more about animals and animal parks. They have been designing their own zoo! They have made a fantastic display which you should go and see. Year 2 always work hard in maths. This term they have been doing addition and they have recently been learning about money. The Romans Year 3 children have made beautiful mosaics. They have been practising their ICT skills, making an iBook about Roman feasts. They also have put significant dates on a timeline in chronological order. They have been looking at materials and their properties. They have learned what a noun, adjective and a verb is. They have also been busy in maths, looking at time, odd and even numbers and 3D shapes. Before home time, they have been listening to Gangsta Granny and they have recently started The Demon Dentist. Year 3 enjoyed their school trip to Abergwili Museum, to see what they could find out about Roman Britain. They were able to dig for Roman artefacts and had a look around the museum. After that, Mr. Stopp took them on a tour around Carmarthen to look at the Roman Wall and to visit the Ampitheatre. This was a lot of fun as Ryan and Mr Stopp had a pretend gladiator fight. Ryan won of course! They had a great day and learned a lot of new things about the Romans. Flight Year 4 pupils have been looking at the theme of ‘Flight’. They have looked at hot air balloons, carrying out research on how they fly. They have made their own colourful kites by following instructions and they enjoyed flying them on the field. Cecil’s kite got stuck on the rugby post; Imogen and Lucie’s kite got tangled together, followed by Katie and Emily’s kite joining together! They had lots of fun. Two ladies visited the school, bringing with them lots of birds, such as baby barn owls, falcons, hawks and tawny owls. Year 4 had an opportunity to hold the birds which they thought were very cute and soft. The two ladies were letting the birds of prey fly on to Miss Abbey, Miss Daniels and Mrs Davies’ arms one at a time. Year 4 found out some interesting facts - how fast the birds can travel; what age they are and what kind of birds they are. They are now going to be testing frisbee’s in Science to see which ones travel the furthest – they are looking at forces and air resistance. In maths, they have been playing the game ‘What number am I?’ They have been looking at story writing and during P4C, they looked at solving different dilemmas. In Gymnastics, they have been practising their star, straight, puck and tuck positions; as well as using the apparatus. Ryan was the champ! We had lots of fun on our school trip. My kite didn’t tangle! PC Sharon came to visit Year4/5 to talk about antisocial behaviour. They have been looking at different types of lines, such as Horizontal, Vertical, Parallel and Perpendicular. They have been looking at autobiographies and have been writing about themselves. Year 4/5 enjoyed planting daffodil bulbs in mini pots, to support Marie Curie Cancer Care. We enjoyed planting bulbs for Marie Curie. Scream Machine Year 5/6 have been doing work based on their theme called ‘Scream Machine’. They carried out a science investigation on forces and used the information that they discovered in order to work out the most powerful roller coasters in Disneyland. Ina maths, they have been creating bar graphs and line graphs showing the steepest and fastest roller coasters in the world. In their literacy sessions, they have been writing shape poetry all about a trip on a roller coaster. Their history lessons have been about investigating how roller coasters have developed and researching important figures such as John Miller. This is the life! Energy This term, Year 6 children have been learning about the effects and consequences of global warming. They have been putting information about Carbon dioxide levels into a graph. Their class eco target is energy, so they have been learning about wind farms and forming opinions about whether they are a good or bad alternative source of renewable energy. In maths, they have been practising the grid and partitioning method to multiply larger numbers such as 600X200 and 830X520. They enjoyed orienteering in Pembrey Country Park with the Prince’s Trust.
