Dear Parents,
The end of the year is near and warm weather is upon us! Children everywhere are excited to
be able to play outside. This is a very exciting part of the school year. We have seven weeks
left of school and these final weeks will bring SOL testing, end-of-year awards, picnics, and
lots of celebrating for all that is great here at Pennington. With all the excitement, we truly
need your help as a part of our family and team to ensure that students remain focused on
instruction, attend remediation, and get lots of practice at home. This can be done in numerous
ways, such as: Study Island, IXL, SOL released tests, and reviews and resources provided by
teachers. We ask that our wonderful families make sure that daily routines stay the same during
the SOL testing weeks, and that all students get plenty of rest, eat well, and are prepared to do
their very best. We believe in you and know you will continue to be the best you can be! We
look forward to a great end of the school year!
With SOL’s approaching this month, we wanted to offer some
strategies for handling the potential stress/anxiety that can come with
this time of year. Visit the following link for some helpful tips/
strategies that may be beneficial for before, during, and after the
testing day.

ART NEWS
The County Fine Arts Festival was a huge success. This year it was held at Patriot High School on
April 18th. Pennington was well represented with over 80 pieces in the show.
The Pennington Fine Arts Gala was also a huge success with live music, make-it take-it art projects and
of course, lots of artwork! It was held on Earth Day this year and also incorporated many pieces of art created
from recycled materials.

The American Dream Musical was held on April 15, 2015 at 7:00 pm. All of the characters
where based on the sixth grade history curriculum. Ms. Sharpe helped by making the big book in
the background. This musical was about our country and the people that discovered and settled
America. The fifth graders sang many patriotic songs that our lovely music teacher Mrs. Stewart
picked out. All of the fifth graders put a lot of work into the musical and practiced many hours to
get it just right. There were about 60
kids that had speaking parts. This was
one of many great musicals put together
by Mrs. Stewart for the wonderful and
fabulous fifth graders at Pennington.

Right to Special Programs/Services
The Prince William County Public Schools Division is required to inform the community of
a student’s right to a free, appropriate public education and the availability of programs and
services, including a special education. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement
Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) are federal laws that give the
School Division certain responsibilities with respect to providing such educational programs to
students with disabilities. Under the IDEA and Section 504, the School Division has the
responsibility to actively and continuously identify, locate, and evaluate those children, infant to
age 21, living in Prince William County who may be in need of special education and/or related
services, or adaptations or accommodations to regular education services. These laws also
require the School Division to:

Refer for possible evaluation any student of school age living in the School Division who a
school staff member suspects may be disabled.

Provide appropriate educational and school related opportunities to students with
disabilities in an inclusive setting to the maximum extent appropriate.

Provide notice of the availability of services and types and location of services to nearby
private schools, pediatricians, and the Health Department.

Provide parents/guardians of students with disabilities with notice of their rights annually,
and prior to their student’s evaluation and placement, or any significant change in their
student’s placement.
• Develop and implement procedural safeguards with respect to actions regarding the
identification, evaluation, and placement of students with disabilities.
• Provide written notice of the School Division’s procedural safeguards to parents or guardians.
If you suspect that your student may have a disability affecting your student’s
development or academic performance, or may have a mental or physical impairment that
substantially limits a major life activity, please contact the Director of Special Education at
703.791.7287 for further information.
The Prince William County School Division does not discriminate in employment or in its educational programs and activities
against qualified individuals with disabilities, nor on the basis of age, gender, race, color, religion or national origin .
