A Message From Our PTA President
Hello Penny Road Parents,
And Hello Spring! We finally made it through the winter and can trade our
boots for flip-flops. Although the snow and ice tried to keep us inside the past
couple of months, we were still able to have fun and support our school. The
Annual Talent show finally took place on March 3rd after several delays and it
was a wonderful event. PRE students definitely have talent! Be sure to check
out the write-up inside this edition. Our Spring Book Fair was a big hit and family
night was a great success. We were able to provide all K-1st grade students
with a free book as a reward for their reading almost 10,000 books in the Books
and Beyond Challenge. We can’t forget all those that braved the cold to
come out to Pizza Bingo in February. It was worth the extra coat and gloves!
Now, it is time to look ahead to the last couple of months of school and start
thinking about Spring Carnival, Field Day, End of Year testing, class parties and
a few grade field trips. This edition of the Panda Post contains details about this
year’s Spring Carnival. We are continuing our celebration of Penny Roads 25th
year with a theme of Back to the Future. Make sure you turn in your order forms
and volunteer sign ups! The Carnival committee is working very hard to put together an event to remember, but we need YOUR help making it happen.
Now is also the time to start thinking about next year and what role you would
like to play in your PTA. Exciting events are already being planned for next year
and we need everyone’s input to make it happen. At the April PTA meeting
(4/9), we will vote in the 2015-2016 Executive Board and talk about some of the
plans that are being made. Volunteer opportunities are readily available, so
please try to attend this very important meeting. It’s only an hour of your time
but it can make a huge impact on the school and your children’s education.
I hope to see all of you at the Carnival in a few weeks!
Sincerely,
Sherri Stecher
2014-2015 PTA President

5th Grade Tea
On Friday, March 13th the school cafeteria was decorated with white
tablecloths and centerpiece vases of white hydrangeas wrapped with
red ribbons. At each place setting, china tea cups and saucers, place
cards and gift bags of sweets were set for students and guests. Classical
music filled the room. It was time for our annual 5th grade tea. Our
fifth grade students dressed up for this special occasion and demonstrated proper etiquette while sipping tea, tasting tea sandwiches and
being served assorted desserts from silver trays.
This PTA event received much support. Many thanks to all the volunteers who sent in donations and to those who helped set up, serve and
clean up. It couldn’t have been done without the efforts of all involved. A special thanks to a dedicated tea committee: Alice Tate,
Nancy Wujek, Kristen Strandberg, Libby Valyo, Katie Leaver, Elizabeth Vickery, Melissa Fezer, Sheleen Beck and Heather Astudillo. All
who worked for over the past month to ensure its success.
This is a wonderful Penny Road tradition and a memorable one.

GET READY FOR FIELD DAY!
SAVE THE DATE! Believe it or not, Spring is coming. It’s time to think warm weather and outside activities
and that means Field Day 2015. The dates are June 4 th for K-1 and Jume 5th for 2-5.
Watch for Volunteer Opportunities for Field Day 2015! This is our biggest volunteer need all year. Volunteers will be needed to help direct the children through the games; set-up; clean-up; volunteer nurses; floaters
and we will also need some strong dads to take down the water slides and man the dunking booths…. Your part
is easy – no athletic skills required.
Feel free to contact Dawn Skelton at [email protected] or Christine Martin at [email protected] .
Also, we are asking for donations of bottled water to keep all our volunteers well hydrated. You can begin
dropping all donations off in the PE office.
Get ready for fun in the Sun!

When making your request, please keep in mind:
-Your letter should contain your child's name and the grade they will be in next year.
-Your letter should state your child's need (example: twins placed in a class together or separated)
-Your letter can contain teaching qualities that would best fit your child but should not contain the name of a
specific teacher.
-Your letter can contain any other information you would like the principal to be aware of concerning your child.

Congratulations to our 1st Place Winners in Problem 2! They will go to the State Tournament on April 11 at ASU in
Boone to again compete in Problem 2, and represent Penny Road. The team will work on fine-tuning their Fourth Of
July Celebration themed skit and rubber band-powered devices over the next month until State. Team 2 members
each received a medal, and the team received a trophy for our school.
Congratulations to our 3rd Place Winners in Problem 4! The team’s classical Greek god themed skit showcased their
solution. The audience held our breath as we watched weight after weight being placed on their balsa structure, until
it finally crumbled under 182 pounds! Team 4 members each received a medal.
All teams performed their solution with humor & creativity. It was incredible to see the wonderful solutions that our
teams came up with in response to some baffling problems.
The four teams are:
Problem 1: Runaway “Train” coached by Bill McKenzie and Rich Sharples Team members include: Brenna
McKenzie, Jack Sharples, Rebecca Wyman, Megan Carawan, Will Martin and Chase Field.
Problem 2: Experiencing Technical Difficulties coached by Donnell Rini-Swyers and Erin Masercola . Team members include: Kennedy Swyers, Ike Bonin, Emma Cockman, Makayla Bihlmeyer and Sylvia Buchanan.
