Healthy Recipe: Strawberry Whipped Angel Cake
Serves 10 Serving size: 1 slice
Ingredients
1 angel food cake, store-bought or prepared
from mix
2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced
One 8-ounce container light whipped topping
Gretna Senior and Wellness Center
Directions
1. If cake is freshly baked, let cool completely.
2. Slice angel food cake in half horizontally. Set the top part of the cake aside.
Create a tunnel for the filling in the bottom half of the cake by removing
some of the interior, leaving the base intact.
3. In a large bowl, break up the removed pieces of cake. In another bowl, add
half of the whipped topping. Fold in 1 pint of sliced strawberries and the
cake pieces. Spoon whipped topping mixture into cake tunnel, pressing
down firmly.
4. Replace top of cake, pressing gently. Frost cake with remaining whipped
topping. Cover top of cake with remaining strawberries. Chill for 15
minutes before slicing.

Reduce Your Risk of Falls
As we age, falling and the resulting injuries become major risk factors in
our lives. There are several things you can do to help protect yourself.
Being physically fit, understanding the effects of your medications,
making simple changes to fall-proof your home and being aware of
factors that can cause a fall outside the home can make the balancing act
of fall prevention much easier.
Here are several tips to avoid falls at home:
■ Avoid walking in slippers, socks and stockings, and wear low-heeled,
rubber-soled, supportive shoes to keep your footing.
■ If you use eyeglasses, wear them and keep them clean so you can
see well as you move around.
■ Have secure handrails and good lighting in stairwells.
■ Increase lighting in rooms that are dimly lit to avoid tripping.
■ Tack electrical cords to baseboards to prevent tripping over them.
■ Keep a flashlight, along with replacement batteries, by your bed.
■ Place nightlights in your bedroom, hallway, bathroom and kitchen.
■ Use handrails and nonskid mats in the bathroom.
■ Use a cordless phone, and keep it with you to avoid having to get up
and walk quickly to answer it.
■ To reach things, use a step stool with sturdy
handrails and wide steps.
■ Take precautions when walking outside the home.
Wear rubber-soled shoes for increased traction.
■ Use a cane or walker to help with stability.
■ Try to avoid or be extremely careful of polished
floors that become slick when wet. Walk on the
grass if the pavement is slick.
With this knowledge, you can take the right steps to
avoid falls and ensure your quality of life.
