Wrist Joint By Shimin Tan & Racheal Cortner Straight to the Joint ● Radiocarpal joint ● A synovial ellipsoid joint ● Fun Fact: ○ Actually a collection of multiple bones and joints ○ Ulnar is not part of the wrist joint Ulnar Collateral Ligament ● From the ulnar styloid process to the triquetrum and pisiform ● Works with the radial collateral ligament ○ prevents excessive lateral joint displacement Radial Collateral Ligament ● From the radial styloid process to the scaphoid and trapezium ● Works with the ulnar collateral ligament ○ prevents excessive lateral joint displacement Palmar Radiocarpal Ligament ● From radius to both rows of carpal bones ● Increases stability ● Ensures the hand follows the forearm in supination. Dorsal Radiocarpal Ligament ● From the radius to both rows of carpal bones ● Contributes to wrist stability ● Limits flexion/radial deviation of the wrist. ● Ensures hand follows forearm in pronation ● As its fibers descend they angle across the wrist joint to the ulnar side of the wrist attaching to the posterior surface of the proximal row of carpal bones Palmar Ulnocarpal Ligament ● A cord-like ligament ○ attaches the styloid process of the ulna to the lunate and triquetral bones ● Stabilize the wrist joint ● limit extension of the wrist Transverse Carpal Ligament ● ● ● The flexor retinaculum of the hand Strong, square-shaped fibrous band crossing carpal bones transversely, forming the roof of the fibro-osseous carpal tunnel. Attaches to hamulus of the hamate and the pisiform, forming two laminae laterally Myology of the Wrist ● Seven muscles ○ Flexors ■ FCU ■ FCR ○ Palmaris Longus ○ Extensors ■ ECRL ■ ECRB ■ ECU Carpal Tunnel Also called: median nerve compression A numbness and tingling in the hand and arm caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist Very common More than 3M US cases per year Medically treatable By a doctor or professional Requires a medical diagnosis Rarely requires lab tests or imaging Medium-term Often resolves within a few months Treatment may include rest, ice, wrist splints, cortisone injections, and surgery.
