Greetings, Perry Residents!
It’s hard to believe March is upon us already, especially when the weather has made it seem
like a perpetual January! Despite these cold temperatures, we can say emphatically that the
weather has not slowed our students down one bit. Inside these pages you’ll get another brief
glimpse of some of the wonderful
things they are accomplishing,
as well as a look at some of the
happenings inside our schools.
As always, we thank you for your
support of our kids--Perry would
not be what we are without you.
Go Perry!!!
Sincerely,

News
Athletics Hall of Fame
The Perry HS Athletics Hall of Fame induction
ceremony was held at the McKinley Eagles and catered
by Mr. Mikes on January 10, 2015. Emceed by Perry
graduate Dan Belford, inductees Bob DiAntonio,
Travis Kovach, Doug Lantz, Jeff Lessig, Jim Luke,
Steve Luke, Lauren Cline (Muhlbach), Ron Sense,
Zach Slates, Shelly Hinkle (Smart), and the 1969
undefeated football team shared tears, cheers, and
plenty of laughter. Perry pride was on full display as
over 200 people celebrated at the most attended Hall
of Fame banquet to date.

of the Year!
perrylocal.org
The goal of the Hall of Fame is to build on our
sense of community and pull generations of Perry
supporters together. The January banquet featured
1959 graduate Ron Sense. His stories of the early days
of Perry were poignant and heart-felt. Jeff Lessig, a
1969 graduate, went from playing in the auxiliary
gym at Perry High School to Chrysler Arena at the
University of Michigan (Jeff played for Bowling
Green). The 1969 team featured over 20 players and
coaches; camaraderie, fellowship, and fond memories
filled the room with Perry pride, and possibly a few
embellishments from their days at PHS. Doug Lantz,
a 1976 graduate, credited the 1969 football team for
getting him interested in Perry athletics. Steve Luke,
from the Class of 2004, explained how his father
(1971 graduate Jim Luke) instilled in him the attitude
and effort it took to be a success at Perry and in life.
Each member of the 2015 Hall of Fame class credited
Perry in helping them become successful not only in
athletics but in other pursuits as well. To our 2015
class of athletes and coaches: You make Perry proud.
The Hall of Fame committee thanks you for your
contributions to Perry pride and excellence.
As we move forward, the Hall of Fame will be shifting
its celebration to the fall. The induction ceremony
will once again be held at the McKinley Eagles and
a golf outing is planned for Tam O’Shanter Golf
course on Saturday, September 12, 2015. Follow

Opinion Writing Comes Alive!
Genoa’s 25th Annual Book Fair
Recently, opinion writing came alive for Genoa’s fourthgraders. Members of the Perry High School speech and
debate team shared a dynamic exchange on two topics:
“Under The Sea” is this year’s theme. The
sea is so intriguing and full of wonder, but
a place many of us won’t be able to visit.
Reading BOOKS, however, can transport
us to a time and place full of adventure,
joy, anticipation, fulfillment, and wonder!!
Librarian, Mrs. Mel Woodson, brings all
this to life by transforming the library at
Genoa into a beautiful sea. She also dresses
as different characters to help get students
excited about reading. All of this creativity
adds to the excitement of students wanting
(l to r) standing: Isabelle Perry, Brooke Moran,
to read. In past years she has been Dora,
Mrs. Woodson, Jersie Papacostas; kneeling Juan
A Mad Scientist, a Pinata, and Captain
Lopez, Hunter Adkins, Mia Lee.
Underpants, to name a few! The kids (and
staff too) are so excited to see who she is dressed like each day. Today’s Readers Our Future
Leaders (written in memory of my uncle, Dr. Dunnerstick- leader and avid reader).
• Should cursive writing be banned?
• Should parents help their student with homework?
The students had an opportunity to see two sides of a
topic debated and were also able to see how a debate
is conducted. The fourth-graders learned how to back
up their opinion with facts as well as how to open and
close an argument. Genoa students are now working on
an opinion piece of their own and are looking forward to
sharing their work in a similar format.
Second Graders
Get a Visitor!
Genoa second-graders enjoyed a visit from Patti Rante
from the Perry Sippo Branch of the Stark County Library
during the month of October. The students enjoyed
wonderful stories and fun activities during her visit.
The stories were all Autumn-related and got the children
very excited for the season! The students discussed
story elements, characters, and sequence of events as
an extension of her visit. We can’t wait for her to come
back to visit in November!
Literacy and Art Night
Literacy and Art make a perfect combination! Genoa’s Winter
Literacy and Art Night had over 170 people in attendance. Local
children’s author, Dawn Clark read her new book Squiggly Gets
Glasses, and pizza was provided by Jett’s Pizza of Massillon.
Stark County District Library - Perry Sippo Branch set up a
nice display, literature-based artwork was displayed all throughout
the halls and there were many creative activities set up across the
gym for students to enjoy. We had such an exciting evening! The
Genoa Title Team (pictured left) and Mrs. Sauls (pictured above with John Smith) would
like to thank students from Mrs. Minor’s Wealth Management class, Mrs. Wells and the Teacher
Academy for volunteering their time. A special thank you also goes out to our families for
braving the cold weather and coming out to make this night such a success. Thank You!

Perry Schools had the pleasure of having Dr. Weirdo and
his entourage come to Genoa Elementary and share a “Mad
Science” presentation for all grades K-4. The students
watched, listened, learned, and PARTICIPATED in engaging
science experiments that kept them enthralled with Dr.
Weirdo the entire time. In addition to the Mad Science
presentation, students were offered the opportunity to sign
up for a six week, after school program at Genoa. Dr. Weirdo
and friends come and continue to pique the science minds of
all student participants. Mad Science instructors provide age
appropriate activities by dividing the students into two, grade
level learning groups (K-2 and 3-4). This division ensures
the learning is targeted to students’ interests, abilities, and knowledge. Students also leave with
“Make It-Take It” items each week. Most importantly, our little scientists leave with a great
sense of wonder and thirst for MORE SCIENCE!!!

T.C. Knapp Elementary
Mother and Son Night
Camping chairs, sleeping bags, mother and son,
oh my! Jellystone Park and Yogi Bear came
to visit T.C. Knapp on January 23. A special
thanks to PAKT for sponsoring this annual
entertaining night out for our boys
and their moms. Refreshments were
served while the movie “Yogi Bear”
played on the big screen. Spending
time with mom made us all “smarter
than the average bear!”
Art Show and Literacy Night
On February 5, our Knapp Title team and
our Art teacher Mrs. Julia Davis hosted
a night full of creative masterpieces,
math games, and literacy activities
for our students and families to enjoy.
Students listened intently to our special
guest author, Dawn Clark, as she read
her original story “Squiggly Gets
Glasses.” The gym and cafeteria were
transformed into an art gallery where
students’ beautifully
framed artwork was
on display. The night
was amazing for all
students, parents, and
staff.
Playing Like
Professionals
“That. . . was. . .
breathtaking!” exclaimed
Brooklyn, a T.C. Knapp
fourth-grader, at the end
of the Canton Symphony
Young People’s Concert
on January 22.
That
sentiment was echoed by
her classmates and their
teachers as they headed
back to school from the
Zimmerman Performance
Hall. The program began
with a musical tour of
Norway through Grieg’s
“Holberg Suite” followed by the world premiere of
“World Piece” in which the Knapp students played their
recorders with the Canton Symphony. The final piece
of the concert featured Wu Man, the world’s leading
performer on the Chinese pipa. In a follow-up writing
assignment, these student comments were shared: “Wu
Man was so crazy awesome at the pipa. I actually felt
the vibration of all of the instruments,” said Joslyn.
“Bringing the recorder to play with them was cool,”
said Evan. “Orchestra, U R AWESOME,” added Tate.
Finally, Morgan said, “That was the best day of my life.
Thank you so much.” Seeing a world-class musician
and a professional orchestra perform truly was an
experience of a lifetime.

100th Day of School
The kindergarten and first-grade students of T.C. Knapp went all out to celebrate 100 days of
learning in school. Teachers planned exciting cross-curricular activities throughout the day to
engage their classes. Students built a 100 cup tower, chained together 100 paper links, wrote
100 words, put together a 100 piece puzzle, estimated if jars had greater than or less than
100 items inside, graphed 100 shapes, and made hats showcasing the number 100 with tens
frames. “It is such a fun day for these kids,” said first-grade teacher Anne Bennett. Fellow
teacher, Tina Carbenia, agreed, stating, “One hundred is a huge number to our kindergarteners,
and we have so much fun playing with that number for one full day.”

Valentine’s Day
With the help from the PTO, Lohr students had a blast
showing and sharing their love for the school, staff
and fellow students! Students had a great time making
and showing off their creativity though their Valentine
boxes and reminding friends why they care. Teachers
integrated the special, sweet holiday into daily lessons
by learning about fractions using Hershey bars in math
and learning about the history of Valentine’s Day in
Social Studies. We had a great time showing our love
from learning.
PTO Sock Hop
All Lohr students and families were
invited to the first annual PTO Sock
Hop on January 23. Many came
dressed in their ‘50s attire to dance,
play games and enjoy refreshments
from our ‘50s diner.
All the
p ar ticipants
had
fun,
dancing
to
“Twist and Shout,” the “Hand

PTO evening events include the
Princess Ball and Boys’ Night Out.
The PTO are excited to see Lohr
Students at each of the events.
My Life, Your Life and True to Life
Students in the gifted classroom at Lohr Elementary recently identified similarities and
differences between fiction and nonfiction texts. These students read published autobiographies
written by their classmates that would also serve as gifts to friends and families. As students
were asked to reflect on the activity, Cheyenne Slingluff shared, “I liked it because I got
to learn things about my classmates I didn’t know before.” Author signing and author
interviews completed the book reporting process. After they returned from the holiday break,
they continued their nonfiction studies and recently shared presentations which served as a
culmination to nonfiction biographic studies. Students walked through the research process
and were give multiple options of presentation format. Some chose to create scrapbooks,
deliver a letter from the person through hand-made puppets, or bring the subject to GIS utilizing
costume and props. Some even wrote diary entries or produced Powerpoint presentations in
a timeline format. Mrs. Brown, the GIS teacher, shared, “I am constantly amazed at the
ingenuity displayed by these young people.”
The elementary GIS students will be combining to present an Expert Expo at Whipple
Elementary on Thursday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. Prepare to be amazed!

Have A Heart for Akron Children’s Hospital
Watson Elementary School became “Change Bandits” for the
11th year as part of 98.1 WKDD’s Have a Heart, Do Your Part
Radiothon to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital. Watson students
donated their piggy bank money, loose change and even some
birthday money to help the kids in need. The whole school became
miracle makers as each classroom tried to raise the most money.
The top three classes were Mrs. Meeks (Grade 3), Mr. Tilley (Grade
1) and Mrs. Rochford (Kindergarten). Mrs. Eisenbrei’s third-grade
class created a Crayon Factory and sold fun-shaped recycled
crayons for 25 cents to help raise money for Akron Children’s
during lunch. The school had two bake sales, face painting for $1,
and Jeans Days with a donation for staff members. Pizza lunches
with a favorite staff member were also raffled off to the students
who donated. Many students became involved by making their
own collection jar and asking for donations from family and
friends. Watson students also collected 175 boxes of Valentines
for the patients to pass out to their family, friends and staff at the
hospital.
On Saturday, February 14, Watson Elementary School
presented Akron Children’s Hospital with a check for over
$5,000! It was quite a celebration as many people were amazed
that an elementary school of fewer than 400 students could raise
so much money for other children. This brings their 11 year total donation to Akron
Children’s Hospital to over $35,000, every penny of which goes directly to patient care.
Watson Elementary knows how truly blessed we all are to have such an amazing facility so
close to home, as everyone has or knows of someone who has been touched by this miracle
making hospital. It’s all about Kids Helping Kids and Watson Elementary, again, had a heart,
and did their part for the kids at Akron Children’s.

the two elementary gifted education units in the district.
This spring even bigger things are coming as Whipple
hosts the district’s first EXPERT EXPO. This event
will feature the amazing displays of all 56 of Perry’s
elementary gifted students from all 5 buildings. Students
will come together in Whipple’s gymnasium May 7, from
6:30-7:30 p.m., to showcase the results of several weeks
of research, note-taking, and project-based learning that
has made them EXPERTS on their chosen topic. Parents,
friends, and family are invited to attend and check out
the amazing talents of these unique students. Whipple’s
staff is thrilled to be able
to support these students
and spread the word
about our district’s gifted

The Whipple Heights Hot Shots,
continue to “wow” the crowds with
their amazing basketball tricks as they
entertained at Genoa, Knapp, Denison,
Sandy Valley and Whipple Elementary.
The Hot Shots travel to area schools
for the American Heart Association to
perform Kick-off Assemblies for Jump
Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart.
Their goal is to teach students how
to have a healthy lifestyle and fight
the possibilities of heart disease and
stroke. They also performed half-time
shows at the Perry vs. Jackson boys’
basketball game and for the Canton Charge. Lastly, they performed a show for the Perry
Board of Education meeting and had the opportunity to travel to the OAHPERD Convention
at Kalahari in Sandusky, Ohio, as the convention demonstration team. We want to wish them
luck and congratulate them on their success!
Furthermore, students at Whipple Heights Elementary participated in the 20th Celebration
of Hoops for Heart on February 25-27. They had a fabulous celebration and donations are
still coming in! They hope to meet their goal of $8,000.00. Each student who collected at
least $5 will receive individual thank you gifts and Whipple will receive physical education
equipment. Thank you to everyone for supporting this worthwhile event!

Whipple’s Literacy Night/Art Show was held January
22 and was another huge success. The theme of the
night was the Art of Reading. All of the art projects
were designed around different children’s books. The
children worked hard in Mrs. Mullane’s class to create
projects that coincided with the books. Our star for
the night was children’s author Dawn Clark. Mrs.
Clark read her story Squiggly Gets Glasses, and the
students were able to design their own glasses as well
as illustrate a page in the story. As our families walked
the halls, they hunted for art work to answer scavenger
hunt questions and participated in at least one of our
literacy activities. The students had the opportunity
to make either paper puppets for the story, Giraffe’s
Can’t Dance; paint a picture with “snow” for the story, A Snowy Day; color a picture of Pete
the Cat and add groovy buttons; or decorate their own caterpillar for the story, The Hungry
Caterpillar. We even raffled off one basket full of art supplies, one basket full of literacy
activities, and five autographed Squiggly Gets Glasses books. It certainly was a night full of
rich literature experiences!

Pfeiffer Intermediate
d.a.r.e.
At the D.A.R.E. Graduation
Ceremony held on January
21, outstanding 6th-graders
Jahari Harris, Caroline
Kamerer, and William
Hughes II were recognized
as the Top D.A.R.E.
Students for the second
quarter grading period.
They are asked to take a
pledge to stay alcohol,
tobacco and drug free, to
live without violence and
continue to spread the knowledge of D.A.R.E. with others. These students were chosen as the
top students due to the time and effort they put into making these lessons personal and sharing,
not only what they learned, but how they are applying it to their lives. What really set these
students apart was their ability to convey the D.A.R.E. teachings into their final essay, which
outlines how the D.A.R.E. curriculum has impacted their lives. They also have excellent class
participation and demonstrate good character. Officer Blanc appreciates the work that ALL
students put into the essays and enjoyed reading each of them. Congratulations to all second
quarter students for graduating from the D.A.R.E. program!
Lunch with PHS Students
Pfeiffer held a walk-a-thon to raise funds for the school. Every student that raised at least
$100 was invited to a catered lunch where the students sat and ate with students from the high
school.
Rube Goldberg
Mrs. Woofter’s fifth-grade students at Pfeiffer spent
two months building Rube Goldberg Machines. They
showcased their machines the afternoon of January
23 in Pfeiffer’s LRC. Their challenge was to create a
machine using at least three simple machines, four
energy transfers, using eight steps with the ultimate goal
of raising a golf ball ten centimeters. The students had
a blast building their machines and learned a lot about
problem solving, scientific processes, and working with
a team.
Person of Character
Fifth grade math teacher Mrs. Kelsey Whitfield was
honored as the Perry Local 2014-2015 Person of
Character on October 21, 2014, by Character
Counts! in Stark County. Mrs. Whitfield routinely
goes above and beyond for her students. Last summer
she developed, organized and ran a summer math camp
for students entering fifth-grade as a way to strengthen
their math skills and ease their transition to Pfeiffer.
She demonstrates a caring attitude towards her students
and they enjoy being in her class. Congratulations Mrs.
Whitfield!

New Digital Arts Being offered at PHS
Students will be getting expanded
opportunities in the digital arts next year at
Perry High School. Perry has an outstanding
art program, and new technologies are
giving the students a chance to expand their
knowledge and experiences in the visual arts.
Digital Arts will be broken up into three
separate classes for three different levels
of skill and interest in the arts. Digital Art
I will replace Digital Photo, and teaches
the fundamentals of Photoshop and Image
manipulation. Digital Art II will replace
Graphic Design and focuses on the use of
the digital arts and technologies to create
professional style artwork. Advanced Digital
Art will be a new addition to PHS’s Visual
Arts curriculum. This course is for advanced
and highly motivated art students, and
provides the students with a chance to further
their use of digital media.
We are very excited about these additions to
our art classes here at Perry.
Academic Challenge
The Perry Academic Challenge team finished
their season strong with a convincing win
over Hoover, ending their season 8-3! In the
league tournament held on February 4, Perry
placed 3rd overall, and brought home a trophy
which was well-deserved. Congratulations
are extended to senior Michael Eagon and
junior Jake Zartman on being named team
All-Stars. They competed in the All-Star
Match at GlenOak High School on February
9. The team will also be filmed on News
Channel 5’s Academic Challenge program
this year! It will air on Saturday, April 25. We
hope everyone can watch!

Perry Helping Perry
Merci beaucoup, Grazie, Mahalo, Danke, Muchas Gracias,
I love this community! Thank you so much for your generosity, your willingness to
help those in need. I truly believe that together we are making a difference.
A huge thank you goes out to Sandy & Judy and the lovely ladies that run the
Clothes Closet. They do a wonderful job. They are open every Monday from 1-4
p.m. and the 3rd Saturday each month from 9:30-12:30 at Richville United Church
of Christ.
Trinity United Methodist Church houses the Back to School backpacks in the fall,
as well as the food pantry which is open the 3rd Saturday each month from 9am –
noon. Beth, Brett, Rindi, John and the many volunteers keep things running smooth.
Perry Christian Church houses our sack snacks and the Christmas Voucher Program.
Doug and Sarah do an awesome job with the Christmas Program. Tina continues to
do an amazing job filling and delivering snack packs for Genoa and Pfeiffer as well
as coordinating supplies for the Lohr and Whipple PTOs to pack each week. We
will be adding Watson later in the month. We average 1,068 sack snack bags going
home each month with our students.
This spring on April 11th we have our second annual Funny Bunny 4mile run
or walk. PHP is the beneficiary for this fun event that is held at Sippo Lake. If
you would like to register for the Funny Bunny, please visit www.runcanton.
com. If you are interested in sponsoring or volunteering, please contact Melissa at
