The Perry BULLETIN BOARD Vol. 30, No. 1 1st Edition, 2015 EDITOR’S NOTES Old man winter will not let loose of us this year. As of this article, we were still having lows in the 20's at night. All of the roads in the State, County and Township have taken a pounding for the second winter in a row. The frost has been reported as far down as 4 feet where there was no snow to insulate the roads and ground. Until the frost is completely gone, we will not be able to evaluate the damage done to our roads. property. A parking area will be developed on the west side of the property with the access road from Clark road to allow residents access to enjoy the beach area that has been created. The costs will be covered by the grant we received from the State of Ohio. I would like to thank the folks at both the District 12 and the local Painesville ODOT offices for helping us with our salt supply. The local salt company refused to sell us more than 100 tons and at $131.00 per ton. ODOT allowed us to get salt from them for about $40.00 less a ton than we could buy it locally. Again, our thanks to them for helping to keep our roads safe. Spring clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, May 9th . Universal Disposal will be conducting the one day clean-up. We will also be collecting tires (with no rims) at the Service Garage located at 4720 Webb Road. Like everything else this spring, the new Dairy Queen is far behind schedule due to the weather. Work inside has continued over the winter but all of the outdoor siding and brick, including repairs to the pavement, cannot be completed until the weather warms. Work will continue on the shoreline project this spring as clearing continues on the North part of the Repairs to drives and other general work in the Cemetery will begin as soon as weather permits. Perry Township is celebrating its 200th anniversary on July 1 st this year. Mark your calendars now to come out and celebrate this Bicentennial Event on Tuesday, July 14 th from 6-9 pm down on the patio of the Perry Community Center. The evening will consist of food and various forms of entertainment including a performance by Dennis Ford from 7-9 pm. No matter what the weather, our spring flowers insist on showing their faces to remind us that warm weather is ahead. We are looking forward to another wonderful summer season! The mud will dry, the tables will be placed, the restrooms will open and the boat dock will be in place - maybe later than usual, but it will definitely happen. Break by the Lake will open full time during Memorial Day weekend. New items are on the menu this season, including healthy fare. Can’t wait to see familiar faces and to meet new people. PERRY COMMUNITY FITNESS CENTER If you haven’t had an opportunity to stop in and see our new equipment, do it now! The weather has broken and we are ready to get those summer bodies back. While you are in, feel free to take a complimentary class (1 complimentary class per person) and give our group fitness classes a try. We have Boot Camps, Zumba, TBF, Yoga and Spinning to try. Come find your “FIT.” Hope to see you soon. Gate and/or boat ramp passes will be available May 1st. The cost of a new card is still $25.00 with a renewal fee of $5.00. Don’t forget to pay the renewal fee, otherwise your existing card will not work. A new card sensor box will be installed before the May 1st opening and your cards will work properly. If you’d like to make sure that monuments are placed before Memorial Day, please have your orders placed for foundations by the end of April. Please feel free to check with us to make sure we’ve received the foundation request from your monument company. Again, you can ask for Sandi, Karen or Michele when calling 440-259-5140 and we’ll be able to tell you. Please remember when planting around monuments or markers, shrubs or trees should be of the miniature or dwarf variety and plantings should not extend beyond 12 inches of the headstone or marker. This enables us to mow and trim in an efficient manner and accomplish burials in the next graves without disturbing your landscaping. If you have questions, please feel free to call me at 259-5140. If your landscaping extends beyond 12 inches around headstones, you run the risk of cemetery personnel having to dismantle your work when a burial occurs in an adjacent grave. Remember, too, with Memorial Day coming, that we have the Veterans’ Monument at Center Road Cemetery. Veterans’ bricks can be ordered at a cost of $40 each to commemorate military service. The calendar confirms the date, but we have yet to see Mother Nature confirm it, temperature wise. Most of the snow is gone, true, so let’s just hope that by the time this newsletter is received, the warmth of the spring weather will be in the air for all of us to enjoy. With spring comes regular visiting hours at the Perry Historical Museum from noon until 4:00 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month, starting Saturday, April 11th . Take time to visit to see some of the changes that have been made and look through the many photos and interesting information you will find displayed on the past history of Perry. Special visits are welcomed throughout the year and can be arranged by leaving a message on the museum phone, 440-259-4541, or by contacting museum co-curator Carol Coatoam at 440-413-4126. Members or volunteers are always needed to help at the museum during visiting hours, and also at the society’s workroom at 4261 Manchester St. which is staffed each Tuesday morning from 9:30 until noon. The Perry Historical Society will again be awarding a $1000 scholarship to a 2015 graduate of Perry High School. The scholarship identifies the qualities of scholarship, volunteerism and community involvement. It encourages high school students to take an active role in their community, service organizations, school activities, and other organizations contributing to the spirit, health and welfare of the Perry community. Applications must be completed and returned to the high school guidance office not later than May 1, 2015. Check with the guidance office for complete information. Linda Barrett, who is also one of the Perry museum co-curators, has volunteered to replace Karl Locke as one of the three representatives from the Perry Historical Society to serve on the Perry High School Distinguished Hall of Fame Selection committee. The other society members on that committee are Phillip Haskell and Mary L. Platko. For qualifications, the nominees to the DHOF shall be alumni of Perry Local Schools 15 years prior to the selection date, who have distinguished themselves at a high level of achievement in their particular field of study, life’s work, or community service in areas such as, but not limited to, the arts, business, education, government service, community service, science and technology. Individuals can also be nominated posthumously. The committee always welcomes applications for eligible nominees. Applications can be obtained at the Perry School Administration office or from the Perry School website at www.Perry-lake.org. For further information, contact Sue Tetonis, 440-259-9302 at Perry High School. The Perry Township Board of Trustees will be celebrating Perry Township’s bicentennial on Tuesday, July 14, 2015. The celebration is scheduled to take place at the Perry Community/Senior Center on Perry Park Road with area officials and dignitaries in attendance. Music will be provided by popular singer performer, Dennis Ford. The 200 year celebration will feature historical displays by the Perry Historical Society, prizes, food, refreshments and fun for everyone to enjoy. A little bit of Perry history - Perry Township was under the jurisdiction of Geauga County when it was formally organized on July 1, 1815 which was then allotted 25 square miles. But the borders of the township changed when Perry Village consisting of 2 square miles was established in 1913 and North Perry Village that consists of approximately 5 square miles was established in 1925, leaving the entity of Perry Township now with 18 square miles. When the Perry Nuclear Power Plant came into existence during the 1980's, officials of the three Perry entities unsuccessfully attempted to organize into one, with the possibility of becoming Perry City. But with the abundance of property taxes flowing into the area, most certainly for North Perry Village who had the Perry Power plant site within its boundaries and the least to gain from merging, that plan did not materialize. One can say that with the coming of just that one business, the Perry Nuclear Power plant has changed the face of Perry. It is no longer a community that is known solely for its farmlands and nursery fields throughout the Perry area. Developers have since taken advantage of the third generations selling off acres of land making way for the many developments and condominium sites, and also in construction of many new homes now commonly seen throughout the area. In spite of it all, Perry remains three quaint little entities in this corner of Lake County, a place where one can still safely walk the streets at night and raise a great family. It is worth keeping that little piece of Perry history in mind! Mary L. Platko, Historian PERRY MEMORIAL POST #697, AMERICAN LEGION The Perry Memorial Post #697, American Legion will once again sponsor the Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies on Monday, May 25th. The parade will form at 11:00 A.M. on Harper Street, proceed down Main Street and conclude at the Perry Historical Museum. A Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Perry Historical Museum building at 11:30 A.M. The ceremony will include the placing of wreaths, a rifle salute and taps in memory of the departed veterans of all previous wars. All veterans attending the service will be asked to step forward and be recognized for their service to our Country. The Perry High School Marching Band will participate in the parade and Memorial service. Don Densmore, Memorial Day Chairman for the American Legion stated that the earlier morning activities would begin at 9:00 A.M. The groups will assemble behind the United Methodist Church of Perry and motorcade to the Vrooman Road bridge. A memorial salute and the casting of flowers on the water will be conducted in memory of veterans buried at sea. The groups will then proceed to the Lane Road Cemetery for a memorial salute and the placing of wreaths. At 10:00 A.M. a memorial salute and placing of wreaths will be conducted at the Perry Cemetery on Center Road in honor of all veterans. The veterans brick patio continues to expand, and veterans may contact the Perry Township Office to order a brick with their name and branch of service. All uniformed groups are invited to participate in the activities beginning at 9:00 A.M., and the parade at 11:00 A.M. The Perry Safety Forces present: Pre-Prom Mock Crash - The Perry Joint Fire District, along with the Perry Village Police Department, will be staging a pre-prom mock crash on Friday, May 8 th at 12:45 p.m at Perry High School near the bus loop. The presentation is a pre-prom drama educational lesson to vividly remind our students of the dangers of drinking and driving, texting and driving and the importance of good decision making. The mock crash comes to life and shows the students in “real time” what happens after a car rash to victims who are involved and trapped in the wreckage. On May 8 th, those victims will be played by four (4) of their own classmates who will be referred to by name, along with their injuries. The event comes to life with a student placing a call to 911 as police officers, fire trucks and Metro Life flight all arrive on scene to care for the injured. This vivid mock crash is not meant to scare or gross out anyone, but to present the facts and truth about drinking and driving, driving and texting, and making good and responsible decisions. We are grateful to the Perry Public Schools for allowing us to present this very important pre-prom safety lesson. Get your own Perry Fire Departm ent T-shirt - The Perry Joint Fire District has Pirate Fire T-shirts available for purchase by the community. The logo features the Perry Pirate M ascot, dressed in fire gear, holding a fire hose and nozzle in the center of the Maltese cross that is burning. The logo reads: “Perry Fire”, with the words: Honor, Courage, and Pride under the logo. Because of the generosity of our fellow Perry citizens and seven of our local churches; Faith Baptist, First Baptist, Lake Erie Church of God, New Life, Perry Christian, Perry United Methodist and St. Cyprian, and the Women’s League; we were able to provide 49 Easter baskets to children of our clients that are 10 and under in age. In addition, we gave hams to each client family that came in during March. These hams were provided by the United Way of Lake County and Salvation Army. We also thank the volunteers who individually provided items and packed the baskets. We would be lost without them! Don King, father of our former co-executive director, Donna Anderson, died on March 10 th. Memorial donations were made to The Perry Center. We, along with our board and clients, would like to thank all of you who have supported the Center with your memorial donations. Harvest for Hunger is in full swing. Please support this effort by the northeast Ohio food banks, which includes the Greater Cleveland Food Bank through your donations. We are pleased to announce that The Perry Center was awarded a grant from the Greater Cleveland Food Bank based on the donations made to this program during 2014. Your donation does help local people. HEAP ended on March 31 for the 2014/15 winter, but due to the continuing cold temperatures, the need is still there. On March 20th, our annual Dodgeball tournament took place in the Perry Middle School gym and included 6 th , 7 th , and 8th graders competing for the Dodgeball champion title. The middle school students had a blast and the amount of family members that came to support their children was amazing! The PWL would like to thank all of our volunteers, including middle school staff members who all helped to make this event a success for the students! Thank You to everyone who attended the Perry Women’s League Annual Bunny Lunch on March 28th. This year was a sold out event! The weather was chilly but nice and sunny. The kids kept busy with crafts, petting live bunnies, face painting, getting their picture taken with the Easter Bunny and a stage show that included magic. Parents had fun trying to win the 50/50 raffle and 30 items in our Chinese Auction. We sell a total of 300 tickets and have them available for sale at the Township office at least two weeks before the event. We cannot guarantee if any will be left at the door, so remember to buy early next year! Attention Perry High School Seniors: The Perry Women’s League will be offering a $500 scholarship to one Perry High School graduating student seeking post-secondary education and displaying exemplary citizenship through community service. Applications can be picked up in the guidance department at the high school or you can print one out from the PWL page located under Community groups on the school website. Deadline for applications is Friday, April 24th . Our Scholarship will be presented during the Senior Breakfast May 22nd . The PWL would like to send out a big THANK YOU to all who donated outerwear this fall/winter. Your donations allowed us to help several families during this extremely harsh winter season. Clothing donations are greatly appreciated and welcomed during our open hours. Unopened packages of undergarments and socks are always needed. Our 2015 open hours are the second Friday of each month from 1-4 pm. If you are unable to bring your donation during this time, please contact us to make other arrangements. Community Green Day will take place on Saturday, April 25 th. This event will be managed by the Perry High School students; The Perry Service Learning Class & the Recycling Club. The PWL will provide lunch for the volunteers during the event. Please keep this date in mind and consider helping the students clean up our community! With warm weather hopefully around the corner, many of us will be starting to clean out our closets and garages. Please keep the PWL in mind while you are “spring cleaning”. The Annual Perry Street Sale takes place in August every year and we will be collecting donations for this event. Household items, knick-knacks, books, puzzles, toys, purses/book bags, tools, furniture, and such are all items we will be accepting. Shoes and clothing items should be donated to the clothing room as indicated above. If you have anything you would like to donate please contact us. Mary Strahan ZONING BOARD REVIEWING TOWNSHIP’S COMPREHENSIVE PLAN Recent changes in the ownership and the probable use of several large parcels of township land has led to a review of the Perry Township Comprehensive Plan. The review is being performed by the Perry Township Zoning Commission with assistance from George Smerigan of Tactical Planning, LLC. The plan was last reviewed and updated in 2009. To date, the board has read and discussed a presentation on the considerations for reviewing and updating comprehensive plans and has reviewed and discussed an updated land ownership and land use map prepared by the Lake County Planning office. The plan review will continue to be an agenda item at monthly Zoning Board meetings until the process is complete. The public is always welcome to attend. Zoning Board minutes can also be followed through the township’s website. Spring Programs: Intro to Volleyball: this is an instructional program for girls in the 2nd and 3rd grades. The program is intended to introduce and teach the basic skills of volleyball. This was the first year for this program. - Spring Volleyball League: This program is intended for girls in grades 4-6. This spring we have 6 teams; teams will play games on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the month of April.
