Pershing Middle School Language Arts Department Summer Reading Assignments 2015 6th Grade:
Incoming 6th grade students may choose one of the three books below and
complete one of the project options attached.
• Curveball by Jordan Sonneblick
• The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine
! Wonder by R. J. Palacio
Project Options: Postcards
I. On the front of a 4x6 index card write the title and author of your summer reading. In addition to the
title and author, you must also create three different illustrations that highlight key themes,
characters, and/or events from the novel. On the back of the index card, please write a 1-3 sentence
summary, a 1 sentence recommendation (who might like this novel), your name and date.
II. Using a 5x7 index card, create a postcard using the guidelines below:
Back (left side): write about one really important incident from the book. Write from the main
character’s point of view. (Pretend he/she is writing to you). Be sure to include the character’s
feelings, thoughts, or opinions about the incident. Create an eye-catching signature, and include a
P.S. about anything else in the book.
Back (right side): Address: Use your name and a real or made-up address. Use all parts of an
address. Create a stamp that represents one of the main settings. (Where/when the book took place.)
Front Side: Write the book title and author; create a drawing based on the book. You may use
computerized photographs if you like.
III. Collection of Postcards: using 3 5x7 post cards follow the instructions below.
1. Setting: On the front draw a picture/cut out magazine pictures of the setting (location, time, and
place) in which your book was takes place. On the back, write one paragraph describing the
setting. Be sure to let describe the location, time period, and culture of your book.
2. Character/Conflict: Draw a picture/use magazines or computerized pictures to illustrate the
main character and his/her problems. Show what the character looks like, as well as what
problem he/she is dealing with. On the back, write one paragraph from the main character’s
point of view discussing the problem.
3. Character/Resolution: On the front, draw pictures /magazines/ computerized of the main
character and the resolution. How did the problem get solved...? Make sure the pictures are a
visual representation of the resolution. On the back, write one paragraph describing the
resolution.
Note: Write your first and last name on the back of each post card. Write the title of the novel
and the author on the front of each post card.
Note: All assignments will be due by the end of the second week of school. Ideally, you want to
have the assignment competed by the first day of school, but teachers will be flexible and allow
the extra time due to new student enrollment.
