A broad range of business, labor and civic organizations - the Philadelphia Jobs
Growth Coalition - formally launched a campaign last week at a press conference in
Dilworth Park that seeks to reform the City's tax code to promote the creation of tens
of thousands of jobs.
The Coalition's proposal creates a framework
where business and commercial property
owners agree to pay more in real estate taxes to
make the city more competitive by reducing the
wage tax rate below 3% and cutting the net
income portion of the Business Income and
Receipts Tax (BIRT) in half over a 10 year
period. Analysis suggests that an additional
50,000 to 100,000 new jobs would be created
during that time frame. The tax cuts would be
paid for by a 15% increase in commercial
property tax rate. Homeowners' property taxes
would not be affected.
"Our coalition believes the single unifying goal of the city should be to create jobs and
make Philadelphia a top 10 job creator nationally," said Jerry Sweeney, President and
CEO of Brandywine Realty Trust, and a coalition leader. Coalition member Greater
Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's President and CEO Varsovia
Fernandez also spoke at the event, championing the need for changes to the tax code
in order to create more jobs.

Cooperative Business Assistance

access to capital event was sponsored
