COMPLETE PACKETS DUE TO MRS. ROAN AT 4:00, THE BEGINNING OF TRYOUT PREP ON MONDAY, APRIL 27th! Dear Talonette Hopeful: Congratulations on choosing to audition for the award-‐winning Prosper High School Talonette Dance and Drill Team! Being a part of the PHS Talonettes means being a part of a wonderful, growing Prosper tradition that will develop character and determination, foster friendships, and create lasting memories. The Talonette Dance and Drill Team is a year-‐round endeavor that is both physically and artistically challenging. With each new year, we push ourselves to become better leaders, better dance technicians, and better performers. As a part of the team, you will perform at football and basketball games, pep rallies, competitions, Spring Show and other special events. In addition to these performances, the team will also participate in fundraising and community service projects. If you have previous dance experience from a dance studio or from a middle school dance team, that will likely be a big help to you during the audition process! Keep in mind, though, that being on a high school drill and dance team is VERY different from being on a middle school team in terms of the demands on your time and ability. If you have no dance experience but are willing to work hard, that is a plus, too! You can accomplish ANYTHING if you are willing to do the work. J This packet holds important information about who we are and about auditioning for the organization. Please read all information carefully before signing the forms and contracts at the end. If you have any questions, please e-‐mail me at KGRoan@prosper-‐ isd.net. I look forward to meeting you and to working with you during the upcoming tryouts! Sincerely, Kari Roan Kari Roan, Director Prosper High School Talonettes The Sweethearts of Prosper 2 Who are the Talonettes? The Talonettes are a dance and drill team. -‐ Drill teams used to be very traditional (think Rockettes), but within the past 15-‐20 years, the best drill teams made the transition to drill and dance teams placing much more emphasis on increasingly difficult and correct dance technique rather than just synchronized, sharp movements. -‐ We perform traditional styles of pom, high kick, and jazz on the field during football season. At pep rallies, basketball games, community performances, and competition, Talonettes get to experiment with more varied dance styles, including hip hop and lyrical. The Talonettes are a PERFORMANCE team. -‐ Dancers audition for each dance. In the fall, that often means auditioning each week. -‐ The bar of excellence for our organization is continually rising. As Talonettes, we embody the idea that hard work leads to success. There may be times where you work to perfect your technique, but you still do not “make” cuts. If/when this happens, learn what your areas for improvement are and keep working hard for the next audition. It is just around the corner! Just don’t give up. -‐ We don’t change choreography to make it easier for dancers to “make” the dances. -‐ We aim for showmanship and technical excellence. The Talonettes have Social Officers. -‐ These leaders audition for their positions, which usually includes a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Historian. -‐ When we say “Socials,” we mean social officers. -‐ Social officers are responsible for motivating the team by organizing team-‐building exercises, Big Sis-‐Lil Sis, team dinners, opposing team gifts and other similar activities. The Talonettes have Dance Officers. st -‐ These leaders audition for their positions, which usually includes a Captain, a 1 Lieutenant, and additional Lieutenants. -‐ When we say “Officers,” we mean dance officers. -‐ Dance officers are the team’s technically best veteran dancers and are the main student leaders of the team. When you have a question about technique or choreography, dance officers are a great resource. -‐ Dance officers do not give demerits, but they do talk constantly with the director who will give demerits when they notice something that is contrary to our team expectations. -‐ Each Talonette belongs to a squad headed up by a dance officer. Think of your squad as a smaller version of your Talonette family. The Talonettes believe in tradition. -‐ A foundation of drill teams is tradition! -‐ Check out our “Our Traditions” tab at www.ProsperTalonettes.org. -‐ As we grow, we will continue to build upon our traditions! Hold your head high and be proud of making it on the team! You are a leader, an artist and an athlete. Things Talonettes must remember: ❤ Focus and commitment will help us continue to build a legacy of greatness. ❤ Becoming technically precise and artistically savvy requires hard work. A LOT of it. ❤ Nothing is “deserved.” We work for the things we want. ❤ You are your own responsibility. ❤ Gossip hurts everyone on the team. ❤ We are ALL learning-‐ none of us is famous yet. ❤ Lying is ugly. ❤ Be on time (“To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is to be left behind.”-‐ Mrs. Coffin, my former drill team Director) ❤ Smile! Nobody wants to watch grumpy-‐looking dancers. ❤ Come prepared to do what is asked and required. ❤ Wear the correct clothes to practice! ❤ Know your place on the field, your spot in formations and your choreography ON YOUR OWN. ❤ GROW your technique by practicing, taking a dance class, and setting goals for yourself ❤ Take care of your body by drinking plenty of water and putting good, healthy things in it! ❤ Work hard. ❤ Say “Yes, ma’am/sir” to adults or people in leadership. This is good manners and part of drill team etiquette. ❤ Issues stay at the door-‐ practice happens on the floor. If something is bothering you, talk to your Director before or after practice and trust that we will come up with a solution together. Dance time, though, is dance time and we must maximize the little time we have! ❤ Avoid these things: - Whining and complaining-‐ EVERYONE is hot, tired, sore… - Not packing your things! - Missing practice (or performances!!!) - Disagreeing with an officer or the Director PUBLICLY (This includes eye-‐rolling.) The Sweethearts of Prosper 8 2015-2016 Year in Preview Team Fitting and Orientation Meeting: Team fittings and the new year orientation meeting are on Tuesday, May 5th. Missing any part of camp must first be cleared with the director, will impact the dancer’s first fall performance, and will require the dancer to learn all missed choreography outside of team rehearsal time. ❤ Line Camp: o Week of June 15 at PHS, hosted by MA Dance ❤ Officer Camp: o August 7-‐9, San Antonio (Socials and Dance Officers) Summer Practice: Mandatory summer practices begin the first week of August, Monday-‐Thursday from 3:00-‐7:00, with officers ONLY working from 3:00-‐4:00 and Elite ONLY working from 6:00-‐7:00. All members are expected to attend the full practice time for their “groups.” Missing any part of rehearsals must first be cleared with the director and will require the dancer to learn all missed choreography, technique and cleaning notes outside of team rehearsal time. Please check the calendar on our website (www.ProsperTalonettes.org) for any updates to call time for various groups. Additionally, each 2015-‐ 2016 dance officer will hold a 2 hour rehearsal session at her house once during Talonette summer “off-‐ time” to rehearse dancers on the pieces learned at camp. Rehearsal addresses and times will be communicated via the Talonette tab on the website by the end of team camp. Attendance by Nettes at at least one rehearsal session is STRONGLY recommended but not mandatory. The Sweethearts of Prosper 9 Talonette Class: Talonettes will be required to enroll in the Talonette class period on their school schedules. Practice will usually extend past the school day anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, with more being added closer to contest performances. If you want to be involved in another fine arts or elective, you will be required to choose one or the other if the schedules conflict. Football Season: Fall means football! The Talonettes perform at all football games and at weekly pep rallies . Dancers audition for each dance each week which often means auditioning for TWO dances EACH WEEK. Dancers are required to attend all games and pep rallies with the team regardless of whether they “make” the dance for the week. For away games, PTBC usually provides a meal for Nettes at PHS, after which dancers get ready for the game and board a bus both to and from the venue. For home games, Nettes meet at Eagle Stadium in the MPF at a specified time that is always posted on the calendar. We will also be debuting a fall mini-‐Talonette clinic this football season for dancers in grades K-‐8! Basketball Season: The Talonettes perform at select basketball games throughout the season, and we host our annual winter mini-‐clinic for dancers in grades K-‐8 at this time. Basketball season is a great way to support the Eagles and the Lady Eagles while also practicing our competition dances in front of live audiences. Contest Season: Contest season is a wonderful and challenging time for Nettes to hone their skills against some of the best teams in the area and across the country. Dancers can expect to compete in a local, regional contest and at MA Dance Nationals. The training and learning that come from this time is invaluable in helping Talonettes grow into women of character. The team and officer line will perform 3 dances each, and the Elite team will compete with 1-‐2 dances we well. All dance officers are encouraged and expected to enter a solo. Other dancers who wish to compete with a solo or ensemble of any size must show their completed choreography to the director for approval by the end of August. If you are not sure you are ready to do a solo or small ensemble, just ask! NATIONALS 2016: April 8 & 9! Spring Show: Spring Show is a long-‐held drill team tradition where teams walk down memory lane, celebrate school spirit, and bid farewell to the current officer line and senior members. The Talonettes’ production is held in the PHS Auditorium and, beginning with the 2014-‐2015 school year, is marked with the traditional final strut from the current officer line and the hanging up of their field hats by each senior Talonette. So returning members who are NOT officers do not incur as great a financial cost as new members and dance and social officers. Please see the following page for a more specific breakdown of these costs, what they cover, and how to pay. We are in a transition year for uniforms; therefore, once we pass this year, it is my expectation that the returning member cost will decrease by about $280 (the cost of the warm up letter sweater, green warm up pant, and field uniform base). The member-‐owned uniform base will allow for more versatility on the field. We can change the skirt, swap the overlay for a vest, change out a different design of overlay-‐ the possibilities are endless! The pieces that are not member-‐owned will be purchased by PTBC and PHS and will belong to the organization. This year’s returning members WILL NOT pay a pom rental fee since they purchased their poms previously. Some ‘Nettes purchased the green warm up pant during the 2014-‐2015 year and will not need to re-‐purchase them. Texas Motion Sports has a host of optional items available for purchase. It is functional and creates varied looks. ❤ Overlay (seen below) can be added to the base, and having the base separate from the leo allows for us to add additional looks (vest, petticoat, straight, skirt, skater skirt) ❤ Belts are now being m ember-‐purchased and owned because without having custom belts, they do not fit as they are designed to fit. The rental fee paid by each member does not cover the cumulative cost of these items. ❤ As the team grows, new “fill-‐in” pieces will be added. ❤ The goal is to add a new piece to the base every year or two (i.e. a vest to be worn in place of the overlay, a straight skirt, a skater skirt, etc.).
