THE

MarketFront News
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or
some far-flung place you’ve probably heard
about our big, exciting Market expansion project. We’ve been reporting on it, in it’s many
incantations, since years ago. They idea’s been
in the works since 1974 and now: “the MarketFront gets OK from city committee!”
Its big news!
Seattle City Council, in agreement with the
Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority [PDA], has formally agreed to
provide $34 million for MarketFront, a new
complex on the western edge of Pike Place
Market that will combine low-income housing, parking, retail and a public plaza.
The project will cost $73 million and be located on what is now a parking lot on Western
Avenue, just south of Victor Steinbrueck Park.
The overall plan is that it will connect the
Market with the waterfront by a structure
called Overlook Walk, which is part of the plan
to redevelop the waterfront.
The PDA is doing MarketFront in partnership
with the city’s waterfront projects.
Funding for MarketFront also comes from
the state’s Alaskan Way Viaduct parking mitigation funds, the PDA equity, a capital campaign, low income housing tax credits, debt
financing, new market tax credits and grants,
as well as fund-raising by the Market Foundation.
The Ground-breaking Celebration is set for
Wednesday, May 20, at 11:00 am, and the entire community is invited to come see and be
part of this historic day.
Please join Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, City officials, Pike Place Market PDA Council, Pike
Place Market Foundation Board, Friends of
the Market, Pike Up! supporters and our entire
Market community in celebrating this historic
milestone.
The Miller Hull Partnership is the architect,
Sellen Construction is the general contractor,
and SOJ is project manager.
In preparation, for this final decision and fruition of this endeavour, the PDA has held many
meetings for public thought and outreach, as
well as official Council meetings to consider,
and take action on aspects of redevelopment
of the former Municipal Market site a.k.a. the
PC-1 North Site (“PC-1N”) within the “Pike
Place Market Historical District” pursuant to
the Marketfront/PC-1 North Development
Agreement by and between the City of Seattle
and the PDA. The PC-1N site consists of approximately 0.75 acres bounded by Western
Avenue to the east, the Alaskan Way Viaduct
to the west, the existing Pike Place Market
parking garage to the south, and Victor Steinbrueck Park and the Market Place North parking garage to the north.
The redevelopment project known as MarketFront (MarketFront) includes approximately
300 parking spaces below the grade of Western Avenue, 40 units of low-income Senior
Housing, approximately 12,000-square-feet of
commercial retail space, approximately 30,000
-square-feet of public open space including a
rooftop plaza, stairs, walkways and breezeways
and a weather protected plaza canopy that will
accommodate additional daystall, farm and
special event activity.
The PDA is evaluating options for borrowing up to approximately $24 million for
Project costs and general Market purposes.
Such financing may involve encumbrances,
pledges or security interests in PDA revenues, specifically including but not necessarily limited to revenues from its parking
facilities, including the MarketFront parking garage to be constructed as a feature of
the project.
Piggy Backers!!!
Piggy Bakers is the collective name the
Market Foundation has given those amazing folks who are stepping up and help with
the fund-raising of this Pike Place project,
a.k.a PikeUp! In addition to all the rest of the
proposed new features, they also are hoping
to raise enough funds to create a Community Center.
This capital campaign is your chance to

Speaking of the
World-Famous
Market Theater
You know, that spot where the Gum Wall is,
the home to Unexpected Productions a.k.a.
the longest continuously Imoprov-ing theater group in the nation....
Well, we all know the Theater is great (especially since they fix-ed it up and added
Happy Hour) but some people have notoced
that: “The only bad seats in our theater are
in the bathrooms . . .”

And they proclaim that and “we are going start fixing that on Wednesday April 1, at 8:30 pm, at Potty
Humor a Renovation Comedy.”
Tickets are $15. “This is not a joke!”
They know that their bathrooms are in desperate need of renovation. So they’re doing what they do
best: creating a fundraiser show with laughs, prizes and a party!
They say, “We have a plan, a contractor, and a vision. Now we need to raise the money to make this
project a reality. Come share your humor and bring your friends.
The bathrooms are nasty, but the show won’t be. It’s a family-friendly fundraiser.
On any given night, Unexpected Productions is a theater, classroom or community space...but always a
place of joy and laughter. Any contribution of $10, $25 or $100 makes it possible for the Market Theater
to promote the art and spirit of improvisation (and renovate our bathrooms).
Theire goal is to engage and enlighten artists and audiences with improvisational theater and spontaneous storytelling in all its forms -- illuminating the humor and truth in our world. When you donate to
Unexpected Productions, you can take pride in knowing that your support makes what we do here at
Unexpected Production possible, and helps us continue to Engage, Enlighten, and Innovate.”
Support the toilets. Support the show. Be part of the action. This is a fun way to go!
They even have a school!
Student Monica N. Yelp says, “I signed up to push the edges of my comfort zone - which absolutely
happened- and ended up finding a great community as well.”
So, if you are an Improv Fan or not why not try it? Who knows, you may really, really like it!
Registration has begun for the 2015 Spring quarter, and classes are filling up.

Tulip Talk
We all know about and thoroughly enjoy all our wonderful tulip here in the Market, as we’ve been saying since February: This is the best/earliest Tulip Season on record, in these parts and. . . As you may
have heard, up in the Skagit Valley (where many Market farmers hail from), at the Tulip Festival, is yet
another great way top celebrate the blossoms! For more information go to www.tulipfestival.org, there
are shuttles available from the Seattle area.
These were once known as the second biggest tulip fields in the world, after Holland, but the world has
shifted and the show is still on. Even jaded eyes can appreciate these colorful sights. Play hooky, make a
day of it, and whilst you explore you can think of the tulip fields of Pike Place and take a bouquet home
when ever you visit.
Final Figures on the 2015’s ‘Care for the Market’
The Market Foundation would like to give Seattle a huge, “Thank you!”
This year’s eleventh annual Care for the Market Luncheon, which took place in March, raised $174,775
(and growing!) of much-needed-funding, to care for our Pike Place Market community! That is support
the helping services they strive to fund, such as the Market Senior center, Food Bank, Clinic and Childcare Services.
This year’s Keynote Speaker, former Governor Christine Gregoire, challenged the attendees to find
another place in the world where a community of people is as loyal and supportive as the merchants,
families, seniors, and residents of Pike Place Market.
She said,“The next time you walk through the Market, I urge you to look beyond the flying fish and
flowers to see the faces of those who keep our Market strong, and who make this village vibrant.”
The Foundation reminds us that together, we work to ensure our Pike Place Market community continues to thrive for generations to come. Read more about this and other fund-raising campaigns at

Parking Lot Entrance Closure Continues
Through mid-April the Western Avenue entrance to the Desimone Parking Lot is Temporarily Closed,
the PDA’s lot to the west of Western Avenue (below the Desimone Bridge) will be closed. The large green

graduate, Scott worked a decade in
marketing and communication in
the private sector before returning
to UW for a teachers certificate.
In 1994, on his second day of work
at the Market, he taught a school
group scheduled by his predecessor, Karen Maddox. Since that day
he has built a varied curriculum
abetted by a cadre of 12 volunteer
guides, many of whom are former
teachers, and a network of active
teachers who return with new classes every year.
The Market provides over twenty
cooperative merchants who share
their knowledge with the classes.
In 2014, Scott’s program hosted 104
classes of Second to Fourth graders.
Estimates for 2015 are for 2500 students.
Scott’s expansive materials to invite and instruct school participation can be found on the Education
button on the Market website at
pikeplacemarket.org. The material
is in printable pdf format for use at
home or school. Included are topics
and subjects for Field Trips, Lesson
Plans, Market History, Activities,
and Food Drives.
The classes in the Market are not
just an hour of gawking and horse
play, but structured tours with
preparation and follow up. Scott
visits each school for up to an hour
three weeks before the Market class
day with a resource kit filled of
books and interactive materials for
the students, plus a theme and lesson plan with instructions for the
teacher.
Passages tagged along on a recent
Market class.
The group assembles in the Economy Market classroom. Scott is
present with four volunteer guides,
one of whom is Megan Lee, Market
News editor. (Many of the guides
have been with the program for
over a decade.) Seattle View Ridge
School teacher Mickey Rousso arrives with twenty-three 3rd graders
and eight parents, one of whom is a
photographer.
After introductions, Scott starts
the class with a question and answer
session – he asks and the students
raise and wriggle their hands signaling they have the answer. He is
learning names in the process.
Sample: How much do you think

(Answer: The bronze replica that
acts as a piggy bank in the Market
weighs 250 pounds, the original animal Rachel weighed 750 pounds.)

Market?
(Answer: In 2001 The Market
Foundation had a fundraiser named
Pigs On Parade, where 100 fiberglass copies were decorated by local
artists and sold at auction.)
How old is Rachel?
(Answer: Rachel came to the Market in 1986.)
Before going out on the tour, Scott
gives an assignment, which will be
completed in their classroom when
they return to school.
1. Alphabet. Find a food that begins with each letter of the alphabet.
2. Jobs. How many different jobs
are there in the Market?
3. Countries of the world. Find
how many businesses and products from other countries you can
name.
Rules: “Pleeza no squeeza” - Stay
together - No shopping. Also, if you
become lost, return to Rachel and
wait for help.
After this exercise, Scott seems to
know the names of about half of the
students. The class is then divided
into four groups. Each has one or
two parents along with a volunteer
guide.

WHAT’S HAPPENING continued from page 3
Bringing in a can of veggies to a food drive might not feel like a big
impact, but those pounds add up to make a difference. So far in 2015,
those cans and jars have added up to 2,962 pounds of food! That’s
nearly one and a half tons of food from our community, friends, and
donors.
Most recently, Pan Pacific Hotel hosted a food drive with a twist: a
competition between two groups of employees! This competition-style
drive delivered massive results, raising over twice the amount of food
raised last year. Thanks, Pan Pacific!
Thank you to our all 2015 food drive partners: Seattle Art Museum, Accutint Seattle, St. Mark School, St. John School, St. Alphonsus
School and Ridgecrest Elementary.
The Seattle Foundation’s annual GiveBIG day is May 5!
Last year we raised $3,940 dollars and this year we are hoping to top
that by raising $5,000 dollars. Just like last year, all proceeds received
through GiveBIG on May 5 will be used to directly purchase food for
our food bank clients.
That’s right! 100% of donor money will be used directly on clients.
They always need your help.

in the hallway. One poster shows pictures of 100 pigs and their names.
Scott uses the opportunity to explain that a pun is a “play on words” and shows examples
in the names of the decorated pigs (“Ham on Rye To Go,” decorated with a bread slice on
top and wheels on the feet). Down the hall, Dr. LaVigne’s dental clinic prompts a few words
on jobs in the Market. The old “Old Time Dance Tonight” sign allows Scott to reference
older uses in this l08-year-old Market.
Then, around the upper floor and into the back door of DeLaurenti’s, the class meets the
chef and samples freshly made mozzarella. Downstairs the class gets a sample of mortadella, from Brad, a long time counterman.
The Daily Dozen Donut Company is passed quickly after viewing the automatic donut
contraption. Scott works to engage each student, including one very shy girl.
Across the arcade is Umai, which serves Chinese
and Japanese food and is a good test for the alphabet

THE POINT continued from THE COVER
world and other realms collide.
The three sides to the sculpture may well signify
the three tribes; there is also a suggestion that the
three sides correspond to the direction of three
significant ley lines that run through Seattle and
intersect right at the tip of the sculpture.
Oren incorporated crystals at the base of the
sculpture for people to run their hands over, in the
hopes of increasing their chances of feeling the energy being emitted. Hold your hand over the top
of the sculpture and see if you get a jolt of otherworldly energy. Then go back up the steps to the
market and explore some more!
The location of the art is intrinsic to the piece its
self. The point is located at this point for a reason,
and we hear that there is some talk of moving it to
the new MarketFront area, like they plan to move
Billie the Pig, to begin adorning the new portion
of Market. This isn’t right. Let the PDA know that
this isn’t right. Talk to the honorary Market Mayor
Michael Yeager, usually at Studio Solstone, in the
Economy Atrium to learn more.

APRIL 2015
HANDS AROUND THE WORLD continued from the COVER
will appeal to your Retro tastes. Choose from flowers to fish. Or,
perhaps you’d like the woman, busy preserving items in her kitchen saying, “Yes, I can!”
Next to these are small embroidered purses from Thailand.
th
After that come hemp clutch bags from Guatemala, in solid colors, with wall-like compartments.
Three sizes of zippered coin purses, woven in Guatemala, await
your grasp of delight at their striking color combinations.
Also from Guatemala, are similarly-hued, woven Friendship
Bracelets, packaged in pairs for $5.95.
Perhaps you’d prefer a beaded bracelet from Guatemala or India.
Glass-beaded roll-on bracelets in solid shades, from Nepal. They
can be worn bangle-like, in whatever numbers or colors you
choose.
Find necklaces from Canada with lacy, laser-cut pendants.
You may want to take home a beaded butterfly hair-clip or an
actual butterfly from a Peruvian reserve, pressed into glass after
what I was assured was a natural death.
Remember the tiny mirrors worked onto intricately-embroidered bodice of a special dress from India, or around the hem
of a dancing skirt? Imagine the same type of mirrors set into the
brightly-tinted resin to form the backing of a hand-mirror. After you’ve selected one of the many available hues, you may want
to match it one of the little journal-and-pen sets, covered in the
same material.
A pair of simple, semi-precious ear studs could be just the right
touch to dress-up your more flamboyant-or casual-clothing or
jewelry. Choose from amber, amethyst, garnet, lime-green peridot and more.
Silver jewelry from many countries, including Indonesia, is available.
Perhaps you’d rather study the masks from various parts of Africa. One hardwood mask, carved by a member of the Baule
tribe on the Ivory Coast, depicts the face of a woman with big, upswept hair. Sales assistant, Grace, explained that a woman
with dressed hair must be well-to-do, with others to work for her. Otherwise she would need her hair to lay flat so she could
carry things on top of her head. Like many of the other masks in the shop, this one comes with its own stand for display
purposes.
If you are musically-inclined, you may want to try one of the musical instruments offered. There are ocarinas from Peru
and flutes from India.
Also from India are zills (finger cymbals) for use when belly dancing. Some say that belly dancing helps tone important
muscles during pregnancy and ease some stress during labor. Hands Around the World sells decorative brass or silver zills
for $11.95/pair, and you don’t have to spend what seems like hours kneeling on the floor beside a basket full of things to

Mini Market Almanac
This month we celebrate the Fools! As well as people playing pranks on
one another, elaborate practical jokes have appeared on radio and TV
stations, newspapers, websites, and have been performed by large corporations. In one famous prank from 1957, the BBC broadcast a film in their
Panorama current affairs series purporting to show Swiss farmers picking
freshly-grown spaghetti, in what they called the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest.
Full Moon: April 4
Last Quarter: April 13
The BBC were later flooded with requests to purchase a spaghetti plant,

forcing them to declare the film a hoax on the news the next day. [Funny]
