Father’s Day & More Family Fun
BY MEGAN LEE
T
he busy summer season is in full-schwing around here,
with 12 million visitors, as if we needed more excitement. . .
But, we got it! This year begins the “Every Third Sunday Family Fun Day.” In its inaugural season, the Markets Preservation
and Development Authority [PDA] begins a new tradition especially celebrating families, and the first one, June 21, just
happens to fall on Father’s Day!
All summer-long, each third Sunday of the month, will include planting, crafts and kids cooking skills, and a little bit of
urban Market alchemy. June 21, July 19 and August 23, from
10 am to noon, it is especially for kids ages 3 to 12 years-old,
stop by, find the tent and ‘farm-y’ activities just for you!
We’re Asking our Amazing community what their ideas are
for naming the new portion(s) of our Historic Market, the
former Municipal Market Space, where Princess Angeline’s

crusty culinary creations) and now Honest Biscuit, who have
been selling (out) of biscuits at their stands and trucks, is now

“Twelves” -- and those who have fathers who

Ecuador, for the Market’s own El Gringo Imports, (usually set-up) in the far north end of
the North Arcade craftline.
El Gringo is a family-owned business, one of

They, like many Market artists are here daily, and also sell at various farmers’ markets
around the area. Stop by and say hi, feel the

FYI: National Doughnut Day always the first Friday in June, and why not celebrate?!? This year it’s June 5.
The Market’s own Daily Dozen Doughnuts, in the Economy Arcade has an incredible ‘Doughnut Robot’ that is always on the job, squeezin’ out perfect, piping-hot doughnuts and creating tiers of delicious,
two-bite-sized creations: cinnamon, sprinkles, powdered sugar...and their latest maple doughnuts with
crumbled bacon sprinkles.
These tiers can bring tears to your eyes!

The Friends of the Market offer tours of Pike Place Market during the summer months. These tours
are led by Friends of the Market board members and volunteers. They’ll take you on well-worn paths
through the Market’s main shopping areas and its back passageways as you learn about history, unique
artwork, and the hidden features of this, the nation’s oldest continuously operating public market.
Advance ticket purchase is required. Please book well in advance, tours are limited to 10 people. Purchased tickets cannot be refunded or rescheduled as your space is guaranteed for that tour. Reservations
Tickets are $10 and available at pikeplacemarket.org, or ask about senior and children’s discounts.

Case You Didn’t Notice: Cruise Season Is ON
The PDA says that our Market gets over 12 million visitors annually now, and what is exciting is there
are nearly as many locals as tourists shopping here, really. For food, fish, flowers, fun, fathers, feathers, etc.
Even with the onset of hundreds of cruise boat passengers meandering through. For exact dates and a full
schedule go to portofseattle.org.
Etsy Craft Class at Ugly Baby & La Ru
Saturday, June 6, begins the two-day Etsy Craft Party 2015 - Seattle Edition, hosted by Ugly Baby and La
Ru, in the La Salle Building, on 1430 Western Avenue (down on the Market’s Outback).
The Etsy Craft Party is a global celebration of meeting and making. Every year communities from around
the globe participate and organize local gatherings to celebrate Etsy’s birthday.
In 2014, more than 8,500 people took part in these parties, including hundreds of party hosts. 2015
marks Etsy’s tenth anniversary of connecting people around the world to make, sell and buy unique
goods. This year’s Etsy Craft Party theme, Kaleidoscope: Paper Taking Shape, aligns perfectly with this
milestone. Kaleidoscopes represent many individual pieces coming together to create something beautiful — much like the dynamic shops that make up Etsy. Partygoers will have the chance to create three
different collage projects, which will be announced closer to the party date.
Please R.S.V.P. on the following two events on Etsy’s website. Etsy will send us party supplies and decorations based on the number of guests.
The group will be taking over Western Avenue, from 11 am until 6 pm.

JUNE 2015

BY MEGAN LEE
Full swing: Food, Fish, Flowers,
Fun, Festivities and FATHERS! June
is truly fabulous, so much to see, do
and taste. Even the Cherries, from
Chelan County, are comin’ to
Market early. Its going to be a
fantastic harvest season, yuuum!
Before we start saluting Dads, one
more ‘round of applause for the
Moms!! Woo-hoo, that truly is the
hardest job, next: Farmer! (Pretty similar
is you take the time to think!)
Mothers Day/Flower Festival weekend
was another bloomin’ success. . .
and the Flowers keep on Comin’! Why
not get some, and some fish, for Dad!
Plus we wanna get into all the all-important excitement of who was seen...
First, we officially, sweetly and sadly
say a final goodbye to Market enthusiast
and constant/consistent personality Ken
Holyrod, as we went to press last month
we mentioned he was being taken into
hospital. His raspy voice, insight and
thoughtful enthusiasm will be missed.
As you may have heard, seen or noticed
on the cover of this issue, Seahawks
Quarterback Russell Wilson has
been hanging-out here at Seattle’s
own historic Pike Place Market, first
with Ciara. (We hear, a few times.)
Then, he was spotted with actor
Johnny Drama, and most of the cast
of Entourage: Season 8 and The ‘new’
Movie, reportedly just
after a private screening with upper-ups of
Seahawks management. The crew, all being chowder fans, were
spotted at Pike Place
Chowder, hailing head chowder
chef Dario Guerra (as seen on the
cover), they called to him just as the
shop closed and everyone started
donning T-shirts, taking selfies, etc.
Also we hear Luis Robles, of
New York City FC has been
training for his job as goalie by
spending a few days catching fish
at Pike Place Fish Co.
The next question for June is:
Will we see Alex Rodriguez?
Who did YOU see? What was happening? We wanna hear YOUR

HOLDING THE MARKET
TOGETHER
T
he chaos of the Market may
confuse people the first or even the
tenth time they visit.
But, not seen by the crowds and
hustle is an orderliness, control,
and organization working to make
all the commerce, crowds, and entertainment a smooth running experience for all.
The physical Market upkeep and
operation is the principle responsibility of the Maintenance Department of ten full time staff, and
two project managers. It responds
to residential or commercial ‘work
orders’ to repair plumbing, electrical, or structural problems that
threaten business or interfere with
the residents’ “pursuit of happiness.”

The Pike Place Market News is owned and operated
by the merchant members of the Pike Place Merchants
Association, a not-for-profit corporation.
This Maintenance Department,
largely hidden from view, is a wellfunctioning team of tradesmen
dedicated to “keeping it running.”
It integrates with other units in the
complex Market structure to meet
the group and individual needs of
250 commercial tenants, 100 farmers, and 250 craftspersons and over
400 residents and their dwelling
spaces -- and, oh yes, 12 million
plus annual visitors.
Maintenance commands only
one small section in the Pike Place
Market Preservation and Authority
(PDA) annual budget.
It is ranks as an equal beside Facilities, Security, Capital Projects, and
Utilities in a division called Operations.
The three divisions in the Market
structure are Property Management, Operations and Administration. Within this organizational
structure flows revenue and expenditures and all is overseen by the
PDA Council.
Back to the Maintenance Department, whose work never ceases, is
always appreciated, and literally
and physically, holds the Market
together. Their work space is under
the Soames-Dunn Building. It is
windowless, but with walls painted
in soft tones the space is bright and
cheerful.
Before the 2008 Tax Levy Renovation it was dark, damp, and clearly
dated from the early 1900’s. That
period concrete floor had potholes
in it.
Maintenance staff whose work
spaces and offices are here are grateful to the citizens of Seattle for providing tax money to up-grade their
workplace.
The day-to-day maintenance work
is done by specialists with electrical,
plumbing, carpentry and masonry
skills. They can do most all tasks
that need immediate attention.
A few, like Dave Ott, a 23-year veteran electrician who often works
weekends, have skills that span several trades.
For instance Ott recently re-installed new mechanics for the century-old clocks on the Corner Market Building. Eight maintenance
staff are union members including
Wayne Porter, the painter.
All have certification in their respective trades.
Clogged sinks and drains, blown
fuses, windows that won’t open or
close, door locks gone bad or need
upgrading for security, kitchen
stoves and refrigerators that malfunction, or just don’t work, are just
some of the common “work orders”
that come into Maintenance daily
from the seven building and commercial property managers.
John Leonard, the department’s
operations manager said at the end
of May, “we have four hundred and
forty-five work orders in progress.
The Funder Audit annually generates about 75 ‘work orders’ per
building.”
These are dispatched to the staff
trained in the specialty or anyone
else available. Many orders are sent
over the intercom used by all PDA
staff which cuts down on foot travel
over the eleven-acre Market District.
Bigger projects are done by outside
contractors.
That work is scheduled by Brady
Morrison or Andre Zitto, Capital
Project Managers or Bob Beckstrom, Senior Maintenance Project
Manager, a 14-year veteran of the
department. Their jobs are to design
proposals for bids on major jobs,
such as replacing all the windows in
the Livingston-Baker building, part
of which dates from 1904 at a projected cost in six figures. Or a current proposal/bid in the making, in
conjunction with Seattle City Light,
to replace the parking garage incandescent lighting with LED bulbs, to
both reduce cost by one third and
shed more light.

Last month, Brady and Bob presented their proposals to the PDA Finance and Asset Management Committee chaired
by Gloria Skouge.
Bob had two: one a Metal Stair Repair and Repaint of the Skybridge, plus a ’Sand and Refinish of all Down Under
Floors. Brady had a more onerous and odiferous charge, a contract to Install a Garbage Room Exhaust System. After
close questioning as to purpose, scope, and expense by the Committee the authority was granted. The committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the PDA Council for final approval.
This is the Market version of Seattle Process and is fully transparent and relatively efficient.
The PDA has $16,891,715.00 passing in and out of its hands over a year, which is a lot of pennies to be accounted for,
and according the Auditors at the May PDA Council meeting, the PDA does a “splendid job of cooperation and record
keeping.” Ben was pleased to add that the Market’s credit rating is in the high “A”s.
Once the contracts are let, the Project Managers have to oversee the work.
One recent out contracts is the Livingston-Baker hot water heating system rebuild. The window replacements on the
Western façade of the Fairly Building cost $800,000 and a recent Skybridge elevator repair was $600,000.
The Maintenance Department is not just a pipe leak and lightbulb replacement force. All the staff does hands on work
or supervises tasks and repairs that keep the Market ready for another one hundred years of crowds, commerce and
chaos.
Bob Beckstrom is proud of the department’s improvement over the years “In the past, repairs were made quickly
and without any lasting effect,” he says. “Today we repair with the best materials and systems so they will last almost
forever.”

Dawn Dance was created by two lovers of music and fun, Shadi and Drew. Both active in their lives, they wondered if people
like them would get up once a month to dance to great music vs. their regular workout routine.
The answer was ‘YES.” With grassroots beginnings and the boost from events guru, CityGuru.com, Dawn Dance is Seattle’s
premiere morning party! Check out a radio interview with KOMO: soundcloud.com/drew-morrison-5/dawn-dance-interview.

fresh produce at a real live farmers market, nearby.
In addition to our original farmers market that we all
know and love, Pike Place Market operates weekly Express
farmers markets at City Hall, First Hill, Pioneer Square and
South Lake Union. The Express markets bring the Market’s
fresh, local produce to Seattle residents and workers via
“pop-up” markets one-day a week from June to (roughly)
the first week of October.
All of the Express markets operate as members of the
Washington State Farmers Market Association. Fresh Bucks

Pike PLACE MARKET: SEATTLE’S OWN SINCE 1907
. .
Mini Market Almanac
June is traditionally the most popular month to have a wedding.
The custom dates back more than 2,000 years to when the ancient Romans
named the month after their goddess of marriage and childbirth, Juno.
It was thought that happiness and prosperity would come to those who wed
during her month.
Romans also preferred June weddings for more practical reasons.
By this time, the local wet season had ended in most places, so celebrants
could usually rely on dry, comfortable weather—does that apply here?
(Regardless, beware of roving wedding parties taking photo throughout the
Market, from Rachel the Pig to The Gum Wall to Starbucks. . .)
The ancient Greeks believed that marriages consummated during the full
Moon were the most prosperous and happiest. Today, a wedding under the
light of the Moon can make for a magical ceremony.
The month of June’s full Moon’s name is the Full Strawberry Moon.
June’s Full Strawberry Moon got its name because the Algonquin tribes knew
it as a signal to gather ripening fruit.
It was often known as the Full Rose Moon in Europe (where strawberries
aren’t native).
Full Moon: June 2
Last Quarter: June 9
New Moon: June 16
First Quarter: June 24
Birth Flower - June’s birth flower is the rose,
which has more meanings than one can count!
Birthstone -June counts 3 birthstones: pearl, Alexandrite & moonstone.
Quotables:
“How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon.
December is here before its June.
My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?”
— Dr. Suess
