President's Message:
Have a Very Happy Easter:
Planning and preparation for the erection of our new
shed is slowly progressing. We are waiting on a bit
more information and then things should start getting
very serious. Thanks to the Air Lifter and the Sausage
Sizzle blokes, we are also slowly getting closer to our
dollar target figure needed to erect the new shed.
Regarding the Geoff Redsell shed, we have now got
the corrugated iron to clad the outside walls – thanks
to Frankie and the great team who collected it from
Mount Nebo.
Peter and I have started cleaning out the Perth Room.
If anyone is interested in some free Woodworking and
Woodturning magazines, see Peter Myska or myself.
All the very best for a nice Easter with family and
friends...... Sal
"Happy Birthday to You"
Shed closed over Easter:
A very Happy Birthday to the following members who
have their Birthday this month:
Glen Norman - April 4
Bill Walker - April 5
Ken Slater - April 9
Jim Edge-Williams - April 22
Graeme Cox - April 24
Apologies if we missed your birthday as it was not on
the membership database.
If you joined the Shed in its early years, dates of birth
were not submitted. For future newsletter birthday
wishes, check with Ian Miller, Membership Officer, or
Peter Myska, Treasurer to see if we have your birth
date so that it may be included in future newsletters.
Who knows, you may get some birthday wishes from
some of the guys.
Don't forget that the Shed will be closed on Good
Friday 3rd April, as well as on Easter Monday 6th
April.
Timber & Working with Wood Show:
A special 'Thank You':
This event will be held at the Brisbane RNA
Showgrounds 15-17 May. Please see John Balloch to
get a ticket for only $12.
We want to thank Antonio for doing a great job in
cleaning our 'Rest Rooms'. Very much appreciated,
Antonio!
A generous donation:
Our Shed has received a very generous donation from
the estate of the late William Kenneth Howard.
A cheque for $1000 was forwarded to our Shed by
Solicitors in Kempsey NSW, who are acting as
executors of Bill's estate.
This is just another example of Bill's generosity
towards his Shed, and the money will be put towards
the construction of our new shed.
New Members:
We have three new members this month - David Bell,
Colin Roles, and Ken Slater. Welcome to the PRMS.
Marimbas:
Christian Brothers visit:
A project that some members have been involved with
is making Marimbas for the Lawnton State School.
In case you don't know what a Marimba is, here is a
photo of one that the blokes made:
Two Christian Brothers from the Solomon Islands
visited the Shed with Ray Gunson and Mark McCabe
from Epic Employment Service. The Brothers had a
good look around our Shed buildings, and found out
how we provide a safe and friendly environment
where men are able to work on meaningful projects in
the company of other men.
They will consider this 'Shed Concept', as well as other
concepts they have learnt about from other groups,
when they are setting up activities for youth in the
Solomon Islands.
The PRMS was approached last year by the school to
make 3 Marimbas for their students. Members who
were involved in this project were Graham
McDougall, Leo Cerneaz, Des Hennessey and Pete
Cowell.
Making them was complicated, starting with the bars
and then the frames. The length of each bar had to be
cut to the appropriate length, holes drilled for the
frame nails to go through, and each bar then tuned to
the right note by carving the underside in the correct
position on the bar. The frames were built, and then
the bars rest on ropes threaded through the frames.
Mallets were also made.
Making these instruments was a great achievement for
the blokes who built them, and now, bitten by the bug,
a bigger and more complicated Marimba with
resonators is on the drawing board as a future project.
The teachers and students at Lawnton State School are
very pleased with their new instruments.
Use of Oxy Acetylene Welding Equipment:
Anyone using the equipment for their personal use are
requested to contribute a reasonable amount to cover
the cost of gasses and rental.
Please see the Team Leader on the day of use to find
out how much money you will need to reimburse your
Shed.
“Safety is everyone's responsibility – it’s
your own or your mate’s body you may be saving
from serious damage, and remember that we now
take longer to heal than we did when we were
younger.”
Woodturning Classes:
Introductory woodturning classes will start again on
Wed 15th April. The classes will run on Wednesday
and Friday, ie. 2 days each week for 3 weeks from
8.00 am till 12.00 noon. The course will conclude with
making a pen. A fee of $30.00 will be charged. Your
pen will have a value up to $25.00. On graduating you
will be presented with a Certificate of Competency in
the safe operation of a woodturning lathe at Pine
Rivers Men’s Shed.
This is a popular event at the shed so get in early and
put your name on the list. Inquiries to Frankie
McGuigan Ph: 0419 708 864.
We now have a Tormek wet stone sharpening system
which will keep a keen cutting edge on the tools. This
system also sharpens chisels and plane irons used in
the general workshop. Thanks to Management for
providing this facility.
Training on the Tormek will start soon too. This will
be done by John Glen and Frankie McGuigan.
Thanks to the members who sweated in the heat on
Friday 27th March cutting the logs. This will keep the
lathes running for many weeks to come.

Sausage Sizzle Dates:
A job well done:
Frankie McGuigan is the co-ordinator for the
Sausage Sizzles. Please talk to him if you need to
know something. Ph: 3285 8423 or 0419 708 864.
On Wednesday 11 March the following members went
to Mount Nebo to pick up the corrugated iron for
cladding the Geoff Redsell shed:
Albie Ryan
Brian Stegman
Ben Lennane
Col Roles
Dale Courtney
Frankie McGuigan
Graham McDougall
Ken Slater
Lee O’Donnell
Phil Scorey.
Thank you for driving up there taking trailers, ladders,
nail bars, hammers and other tools necessary for the
job. A job well done guys! When the shed receives
this cladding so that it blends into Old Petrie Town, it
will reflect the memories of the 1930’s as some of us
remember them.

Because of the Easter holidays, our first meeting will
be on Friday 1st May 2015.
Smart Thinking:
A man saved his girlfriend’s phone number on his
mobile as ‘Low Battery’. Whenever she calls him, in
his absence, his wife takes the phone and plugs it into
the charger. Give that man a medal!
The above flyer, from the Pine Rivers District RSL
Sub-Branch, is an invitation to our Shed to attend their
100th Anniversary ANZAC Day Service in their
Memorial Gardens on 25th April. Please RSVP their
Secretary by 4th April on 3285 8022, or email
[email protected] also letting them know
if you are laying a wreath.
