information about ErP (Energy
-related products) on stand 2 at the
show.
A piece of mandatory EU legislation
applicable in 28 EU countries, it will govern
the ecodesign and energy labelling of
space and water heating products.
In layman’s terms, Europe has decided
that the time has come for gas boilers,
oil boilers and heat pumps to carry
energy labels similar to that appearing on
household appliances, such as washing
machines, tumble dryers etc.
In an effort to define minimal levels of
efficiency, the labels will include energy
consumption, CO2 emissions, and levels
of noise. Europe has ruled that all boiler
manufacturers must fit a low energy
modulating pump into system boilers and
combination boilers, where previously a

basic circulating pump would suffice.
The largest consequence of this is
obviously the cost at production level.
A cost so substantial, that it has led to
a very significant price increase from all
manufacturers of gas and oil boilers. All
the low-energy modulating pumps are
more than double the cost of a standard
circulating pump, which means the
factory cost increase becomes a large
percentage of the total value of the boiler.
The hidden cost that goes unnoticed is
the huge project behind the scenes to
re-code all products for re-launch under
ErP, redesign wiring and introduce the
new component into production. The
increased labour costs alone at factory
level to administer this project are
staggering. Every single product code
will change as an ErP version becomes
available. New literature, barcoding,
communications etc are all adding to a very
big investment in conforming to an everchanging Europe.
