The Toilet Chess Cheat
The 1: intellectual/smart/slow game of chess has been shocked by reports of
cheating by one of its top players. Georgian Grandmaster Giaoz Nigalidze
was 2: welcomed/expelled/ejected from the Dubai Open Chess Tournament
after he was accused of cheating by his opponent in a 6th Round match.
Armenian Grandmaster Tigran Petrosian was suspicious when Mr Nigalidze
kept going to the 3: bath/urinal/toilet before he moved his chess pieces. After
complaining to tournament officials it was discovered that Mr Nigalidze had
hidden a smartphone in a toilet cubicle by wrapping it in 4: toilet/tissue/bog
paper and placing it under the toilet basin.
Mr Petrosian said he didn’t like how Mr Nigalidze would move a chess piece
and then 5: slowly/abjectly/quickly run to the toilet. He said, “Nigalidze would
reply to my moves and then run to the toilet. I noticed that he also always went to the
same toilet”. Mr Petrosian told officials at the Dubai Chess Tournament of his
concern and they started to 6: watch/look/follow Mr Nigalidze very carefully.
After Mr Nigalidze had gone to the toilet again, one tournament official
followed him into the toilet and discovered that Mr Nigalidze was using a
chess strategy app on his smartphone. The smartphone app helped Mr
Nigalidze plan which chess pieces he should move to help him
7: defeat/victory/win the game.
Sadly this is not the first time a Grandmaster has been accused of cheating in
chess. In 2008 an Iranian player cheated by using a friend to text him
8: useful/helpful/winning moves. Whilst in 2010 the French Federation
suspended three players, including France’s captain, after they used a chess
computer to help them try and win the 2010 Chess Olympiad.
When he was asked by journalists about whether he had cheated by using a
smartphone app in a toilet, Mr Nigalidze replied, “Not everything is true about
what Petrosian said.” If he is found guilty by the 9: Global/World/Universal
Chess Federation then Mr Nigalidze will be banned for 15
10: years/monthly/weeks.
