May 2015 Newsletter

 May 2015
Principal’s Message Dear Polton Families:
May 4 – 8 is Teacher Appreciation Week. I want to take this opportunity to officially thank our teachers for
their endless dedication to the profession and our school. Sometimes it is easy to see the hard work of our
teachers as they participate in school events, send notes and make phone calls home, spend their lunch period
helping students catch up, and the myriad other ways that we SEE teachers working with and supporting
Polton students. I believe it is also important that we understand and recognize how much more work is
involved in supporting students to grow academically, emotionally, and socially beyond just the school day.
Teachers spend hours preparing to make each day valuable and academically challenging for their students,
then an equal amount of time reviewing completed work to determine who needs additional time to learn and
who needs enrichment. Teachers are constantly learning the best instructional approaches. Evenings, summers,
and weekends are often dedicated to trainings and workshops.
The greatest gifts for teachers are the words of appreciation. Teachers appreciate when students or parents take
the time to write a note of thanks. Education is the greatest gift we can give our children, and teachers give that
gift every day.
I cannot believe the end of the 2014-2015 school year is upon us! We are getting ready to wish farewell and
good luck to our fifth graders as they venture on to middle school. We will celebrate our fifth graders at their
continuation ceremony on June 1 at 6:30 p.m. That will be their last event at Polton, as they are not at school
on June 2nd. Also on June 1, we will celebrate our kindergartners as they have their continuation ceremony at
10 a.m. This will be the end of their kindergarten year, as they will not be at school on June 2nd either. All other
students, 1st – 4th, will end school at noon on June 2nd.
As educators we always worry about the “summer slide.” We worry that our students will lose some of the
academic gains they have made throughout the school year. One of our biggest worries is reading. Please make
sure your student(s) are reading over the summer and/or you are reading with them. We recommend at least 30
minutes a day for students grades 3-5 and 20 minutes a day for students K-2. As always a student’s academic
success is a partnership between students, teachers, and families. If students make reading a part of their
summer activities, hopefully we won’t see the “summer slide” when we return to school in August.
With next school year already in mind…the first day of school for grades 1-5 is Thursday, August 13,
2015. Kindergarten students will have scheduled meetings on August 13 and 14 and their official start
date will be Monday, August 17, 2015.
Warm Regards,
Becca
1 Honoring the Students of Aurora
1 st Grade
Since 2009, the city of Aurora has

every school building in Aurora in a
citywide ceremony with the city's mayor

3 rd Grade
Students in grades 1 through 12 are
selected by the principal and teachers at
their school for being an overall first-rate
student and a excellent member of the
school community. The program is
designed to identify those students in
Aurora who strongly contribute to the life
and community of their respective school.
They might be a stellar student athlete, a
terrific citizen, a high academic achiever
or a dedicated volunteer. But most
important, they go above and beyond in
whatever they do best.

April 10-11, eight Polton Elementary students participated in the
Young Voices of Colorado’s “Spring Sing.” They rehearsed for three
hours Friday night, all day Saturday and ended with a concert Saturday
afternoon. They saw their music for the first time at the Friday
rehearsal and had everything memorized for the concert on Saturday. I
am so proud of them! They represented themselves and Polton very
well. The director of the Young Voices was very impressed with our
students and said that they were “her favorite”!

Please Call the Attendance Line
720-747-2695!
If your child is going to be absent, be sure to call
720-747-2695 to let us know. Automatic phone
calls and emails start going out at 9:20 a.m. if we
cannot account for a student. Please call in your
child’s absence so we know they are safe!
Update contact numbers!
It is very important that contact numbers are up
to date on-line so that we are able to reach you.
You will also want to make sure that you have
updated the list of who is allowed to pick up your
child. It can be frustrating when you send a
relative or friend to pick up your child and we
won’t allow them to go because that person is
not on your approved list.
