We are in full Spring mode at the Club – there are a flurry of activities to keep you active and entertained this month. My personal favorite is the Open House that will be held on April 19 starting at 11:00 a.m. I hope you can attend, and see the Club in its full glory. I am also looking forward to the Murder Mystery Dinner on April 18 – this should be a fun event! I am happy to report on the progress that has been made with the County of Los Angeles on the proposed purchase of specific, agreed upon, parcels of the golf course property. We have entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the County. The LOI is a non-binding agreement that outlines some of the basic terms and conditions between the Club and the County to explore the purchase of the land. The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors will consider the terms presented in making their decision to allow the sale of the agreed upon property to the Club. The parcel of land and the approximate purchase price are the same as that discussed at the October 2014 Town Hall meeting. The LOI also outlines our commitment to community meetings and outreach to discuss the land purchase. The Board of Governors is committed to meeting with our neighbors and those in the surrounding Altadena community to discuss the land purchase and gather feedback. We will plan an additional town hall meeting to keep the Club members informed on the project. There is still a great deal of work to do with the County and our community before this important project is complete. I appreciate the focused work that many at the Club are dedicating to this initiative. I hope you and your family continue to make the Club your home away from home and find time to join your friends in a fun and relaxing environment. Altadena Town & Country Club 4 MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER by Craig Sloane Don’t you just love the spring in Altadena. We have an abundance of warm sunny days ahead of us, minus the cool mornings and evenings that we’ve become accustomed to this time of year. Many rose gardens are already in full bloom, and if you haven’t yet planted your vegetable gardens, now would be the time. Speaking of gardens, we are approaching the completion of phase 2 of our garden project with three additional 20’ x 5’ beds. Chef couldn’t be more excited. Nothing better than fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs, from the garden to your table within hours...or even minutes. I thought I would take time this month to answer some of your frequently asked questions this time of year: • When does swim start? Spring swim begins on Tuesday, May 12 and Dolphin Swim is June 9. • How do I get my child into a swim lesson? You can contact Jen Masuda thru email at [email protected] • When will the Splash Cafe open? Typically we open on Wednesday-Friday afternoons for Spring Swim, on weekends beginning with Memorial Day, and then full time the first week of June. However, we are closely monitoring the weather and pool crowds to determine if demand necessitates an earlier opening this year. • When will the Terrace balcony be open for seating? We have already started seating at the firepits and will continue to monitor the evening temperatures before we have full dining on the balcony. • Will summer memberships be available this year? For the second year in a row, we will not be offering any summer memberships. We have a membership waiting list of 53 families, so it seems silly to offer a summer membership at this point. • When will we start to see lifeguards on duty? We are carefully monitoring the projected temperatures and will have lifeguards on duty for selected Saturdays and Sundays between now and June. Lifeguards are scheduled full time beginning the first weekend in June. • Can my child work out in the fitness center? Children as young as 14-15 may work out in the fitness center with parental supervision. Children 16 and up may use the center unsupervised. • Can my teenager come up to the Club without me in attendance? Your 13 year old may come to the club unsupervised as long as their behavior remains appropriate. Please note however, that your child must be 14 or older to use the pool/jacuzzi when lifeguards are not on duty. • Can my babysitter bring my child to the Club? Your babysitter/caregiver is welcome to bring your child to the club in your absence, however, as your employee, it does not give them the privilege of bringing additional guests beyond the member children. The Tennis Committee would like to extend a warm THANK YOU to all of our members for keeping everybody’s favorite game at the Club so vibrant and fun. Nothing’s so great it can’t be improved, however, and with spring in the air, we’re excited to announce some fresh new ideas that are already in the works. Let us know your thoughts! POOL TENNIS: In the spirit of keeping things fresh, we will be doing something new at the Club this summer – pool tennis! Put on your swim trunks and grab your racket and sign up for what promises to be a crazy, fun-filled tournament June 20-21. Pool tennis is just what it sounds like. A regulation net is strung across the pool, and two doubles teams face off. Once the ball goes over the net and hits the water, you have 10 seconds to hit it back over the net with your racket or it’s considered a “double bounce.” Intimidated? Don’t be. Teams switch sides every game (so no one gets the deep end for too long), and the Club will provide rackets if you don’t want to get yours wet. Anyone who wants to practice swimming with a racket is encouraged to – it takes some getting used to! Come and join the fun! Now, the good news: all tennis players will be issued three brand new balls a piece, free of charge; simply sign in with Fred at any point between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday to receive your balls, which will be labeled with your name and member number. When you think you’ve officially worn out a ball, all you have to do is submit it for review by one of the pros. If your ball still has some life in it, you’ll get it back for more tennis fun! If it’s truly dead, you’ll be issued a fresh ball. Oh, and if you hit a ball out, don’t worry. Our junior players will be scouring the bushes and nearby streets for stray balls, which they can return for fun prizes! A $1.00 “out fine” will be levied per ball, conveniently added to your monthly bill. Thanks in advance for your support. Let’s all love the earth as much as we love tennis! WATER ON THE COURTS: Finally, you may notice a change in the coming weeks when you go to refresh yourself between matches. In recognition of the California drought, ATCC is doing its part by reducing the size of the on-court cups to a more enviro-friendly size. The California Water Authority has done research and found that the cup size that reduces water loss the most is 1.7 oz., about half the size of a Dixie cup. If you’re thirsty, by all means refill as many times as you need! Thanks for your cooperation. SCORING CHANGES: One exciting new change to the tennis We hope you’re looking forward to these events and changes program comes to us from the USTA, which is experimenting as much as we are. Oh, and April Fools! with a new system to make tennis more fun and fair for everyone! We all know the weaknesses of the USTA’s self-rating system, which leads to players of wildly different skill levels being rated “the same.” This new pilot program aims to change that, and we are honored to be one of only 30 tennis clubs nationwide to be selected for this exciting experiment! You’re probably all familiar with the “handicap” system used in golf. The USTA aims to introduce a similar system for tennis. To begin with, all traditional ratings will be eliminated club-wide. All ATCC players will report their singles match scores to the pro shop. The scores will be evaluated by a computer program that will generate a “Tennis Handicap” for each individual player. Tennis Handicaps apply to a standard three-set match. Handicaps range from -5 (for an expert player) to +5 (for a total beginner). If your handicap is positive, you begin the game credited with that number of games. If your handicap is negative, your opponent is credited with that number of games. Sound complicated? Don’t worry – it’s simple in practice. If Bill, a 0 handicap player challenges Brenda, a -2 handicap player, the score at the beginning of the game is Bill 2 - Brenda 0. If a -3 handicap player challenges a +2 handicap player, the match begins with a score of 5-0. And if a total newbie wants to challenge a pro? That match begins with a score of 10-0, or one set and four games to zero. For doubles matches, simply take the average handicap for each side (fractional games are rounded up), and proceed. Of course, as you play more matches, your handicap can go up or down. Plus, it makes finding a tennis partner much easier, since you can play anyone and be guaranteed an even match. We’re aware this may take some getting used to, but we’re confident that in the long run, it’s going to make a big difference for club tennis everywhere. BALL RECYCLING: We’re committed to helping the environment here at ATCC, and one way that the tennis program can contribute is by recycling your balls as much as possible! To that end, we’re asking all members to participate in our first-ever ball conservation program. First, the bad news: Players will no longer be allowed to bring their own balls to the courts as of May 1.
