Position: Head Coach and Setter
Hours: 32hrs/Week to start
Pay Rate: DOE

General Description:
Since 1988, the mission of the Portland Rock Gym is to teach and train rock climbing indoors, as well as
celebrate and preserve our local cliffs and boulders outside. The staff at the Portland Rock Gym strive to
meet this goal through excellent customer service, professional instruction, helping to create and foster
a superb community of climbers and maintain an exceptional facility.
Coaching for the Portland Rock Gym requires strong managerial skills as well as leadership,
communication and empathy. Setting requires the ability to work with a team and accept constructive
feedback. This position will require commitment and diligence to succeed in lifting the competition
team to new heights and keeping the climbing at the Portland Rock Gym excellent.
General Duties/Responsibilities
 Coach the climbing team during multiple practices each week
 Travel to coach the team on away trips and competitions
 Respond to daily emails from parents
 General team management and planning
 Set high quality routes in an efficient manner as part of a team
 Assist head setter with wall maintenance and upkeep
Required Skills and Experience
 Previous competition climbing or coaching experience
 3 years of setting experience for a commercial climbing gym
 Knowledge of rope systems for setting
 Ability to climb V6 and 5.12
 Previous competition setting experience
Desirables
 AMGA SPI or previous guiding experience
 USAC coach credentials
 USAC setter credentials
 Familiarity with Rock Gym Pro
