Cover Story
This month’s cover named ‘Living High’ created by Wayne Miller was the
January 2015 print of the month and high scoring image from the illustrative
category.
Wayne tells us, “Living High” is a composite of an old abandoned building
and the subject shot in my studio. I found the building (shot in HDR) in
Amargosa, Nevada on a road trip to Death Valley in 2014. The subject posed
for a theme that I had envisioned for over a year and I used my four light set up
for ease of extracting. Adding the props for the desired effect and the models
personality jelled the image.”

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU!
PPA’s Newest Addition: PhotoVision
If you missed Imaging USA, you might
not have heard the news: PhotoVision is now
a PPA membership benefit! What does this
mean? It means that PPA photographers now
have full access to PhotoVision’s monthly
streaming at no additional cost. It now comes
included with PPA membership!
PhotoVision is the popular bi-monthly
DVD and streaming photography learning
program founded by Ed Pierce, M.Photog.
Cr. For 17 years, PhotoVision has offered
photographers professional education and
solutions through cinematic-quality HD
videos from some of the biggest names in
photography.
What exactly does PhotoVision do for
you as a photographer? PhotoVision videos
feature tips, processes and techniques from
real, working, successful professional
photographers. The videos expand and
strengthen the professional photography
industry as a whole, aligning well with PPA’s
mission to do the same.
April 2015
Ed Pierce will continue to produce
PhotoVision’s videos. “Nobody does this
better than Ed,” said David Trust, CEO. “He is
the gold standard and it is a lot of fun work so
closely with him on this.” While PhotoVision
continues to operate as its separate entity, PPA
photographers now can tap into PhotoVision’s
entire library of 800+ videos through
PhotoVision’s 24/7 monthly streaming.
“PPA members are always seeking to grow
as artists and business professionals,” said
Angela Kurkian, director of education. “I’m so
excited we’re able to offer this under the PPA
umbrella of benefits. PhotoVision offers such
a wealth of information, it’s easy to access and
this is the type quality learning our members
look for.”
Photographers who belong to PPA also
receive 50% off all PhotoVision DVDs. Non
PPA photographers can still subscribe to or
renew with PhotoVision at their current rates.

Thursday, April 23, 2015
7 pm – 10 pm, Speaker @ 7:30
No Image Competition This Month
AAU Morgan Theater on 491 Post Street
BART or Park at Union Street Garage
Free Event sponsored by:
Vincent will talk about his transition from editorial photographer from
publications such as The New York Times, Life, Time, National Geographic
– to a commercial director now working for clients such as Nike, Sony,
Adobe, Pepsi & Reebok. He will also touch upon current trends in the
market in terms of social media, the internet and new digital technology
and equipment he uses. He will also be talking about his latest series of
Nighttime aerials of major cities titled “Air” project which has become an
international phenomenon with more than 40 million views online.
I’m a filmmaker, photographer, producer, teacher, advisor, innovator
and very, very proud father of two. Throughout my career, I have been a
fortunate to witness extraordinary news events, the evolution of story-telling
technologies and work alongside many people who have inspired me. I was
born in Switzerland, grew up in France and New York City and went to
college in Chicago at The Medill School of Journalism. From a very young
age I have been on the move, experiencing and adjusting to new ways of life
which have allowed me to collaborate across the arts, media, technology and
communication fields while feeding my own curiosity and sharing what I’ve
learned.
Vincent is a three-time winner at the prestigious 2010 Cannes Lions
International Advertising Festival and his short film Reverie, the first 1080p
video shot with a still camera, was seen more than 2 million times in its
first week of release in 2009. Vincent’s blog attracts more than 3,000,000
visitors each year. He is highly sought after as a consultant and a keynote
speaker. He has been profiled on CNN and Good Morning America and in
dozens of publications. He has served as an adjunct professor at Columbia
University’s Graduate School of Journalism and at the International Center
of Photography. Finally, he is one of the prestigious Canon Explorers of
Light.

Monthly Meeting
My career has afforded me opportunities to do and see remarkable things
around the world and I have embraced each of these chances to learn and
discover next generation story-telling technologies. I’ve climbed to the top
of the Empire State Building. I’ve directed a commercial for Nike with Kobe
Bryant. I’ve flown for hundreds of hours in helicopters around the world
photographing and filming the most beautiful places and landscapes. Michael
Jordan, Shaquille O’Neill and Dennis Rodman have all fallen on me as I
photographed them from the sidelines of games, and I’ve shot 4 NBA Finals,
5 Super Bowls, 8 World Series and 4 amazing Olympic Games. In the weeks
following 9/11, I went to Pakistan as a staff photographer for The New York
Times, and I’ve shot thousands of news assignments from terrorist attacks to
April 2015
blackouts, portraits of heads of state and every imaginable disaster the world
could offer up. I spent a month on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier
in the gulf, photographing my Top Gun dreams during the start of the second
Gulf War.
I’ve directed 4 short films and numerous commercials to date and worked
with thousands of people in the commercial and film industries, all of whom
have taught me so much. Currently, I sit on the advisory boards of several
tech start-ups and I’ve spent the last decade helping to launch cutting edge
technologies that aid filmmakers and photographers. I’ve advised companies
such as Apple, Adobe, Canon and Zeiss. Continued

I’ve lectured and taught what I’ve learned to students and professionals
around the globe. I’m always on the lookout for ways to use my experience,

brought me to this point.

FAA Takes Important First Step for PPA Members
Professional photographers received good news as
the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released
new guidelines that would seem to pave the way for
widespread legal use of small drones in the U.S. While
the details are far from complete, the proposal would
seem to open the door for professional photographers to
use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) as an additional
offering for their clients. However, that door is not open
just yet.
There are also several operator responsibilities to keep in
mind:
1. Pass an initial aeronautical knowledge test at an FAAapproved knowledge testing center.
2. Be vetted by the Transportation Security Administration.
PPA has been working directly with the FAA and key
Capitol Hill staff to bring about this very change - urging
the FAA to loosen restrictions on some of the more
basic uses for UAS, commonly referred to as drones. If
approved, the newly released rules would allow legal use
of unmanned aircraft by specific businesses including
filmmakers, farmers, smokestack inspectors and some
photographers.
“It is going to be a while before our members can
start to use drones as a regular part of their work,” says
PPA’s CEO David Trust. “But these new rules clearly
reflect that the FAA was listening to our concerns, and we
applaud them for taking this step sooner than later.”
There are many operational limitations in the
proposed new regulations; however the four below are
important to highlight:
1. Unmanned aircraft must weigh less than 55 lbs. (25 kg)
2. Visual line-of-sight (VLOS) only; the unmanned aircraft
must remain within VLOS of the operator or visual
observer
3. Small unmanned aircraft may not operate over any
persons not directly involved in the operation.
3. Obtain an unmanned aircraft operator certificate with a
small UAS rating (like existing pilot airman certificates,
never expires).12
4. Pass a recurrent aeronautical knowledge test every 24
months
“The proposed test has yet to be created,” says Trust.
“Once it is, we’ll do all we can to help our members
access the information and compile their applications.”
Sources in Washington D.C. indicate that creating the test
could take months.
And there could be even more positive news on the
horizon for PPA members as the FAA has agreed to look
at more relaxed regulations for micro-drones, a class of
unmanned aircraft weighing less than 4.4 lbs. That is
significant to photographers since many are already using
these smaller drones outside of their business.
PPA will be back on Capitol Hill for more meetings
on both unmanned aircraft and copyright issues. “As
pleased as we are about the proposed rules for UAS, we
might be even more pleased with the discussion about
micro-drones,” says Trust. “I suspect they may even
have more day-to-day application for our members.
Hopefully we can find out more about those rules next
week.”
4. Daylight-only operations (official sunrise to official 11
sunset, local time).
