ELI CORE PROGRAM
ELI: Intensive English Program
Summer I 2015
This program, designed to help learners gain a functional
command of English in listening, speaking, reading and writing, is
divided into multiple levels. This program caters to the beginning
English speaker as well as advanced students seeking to enter a
higher educational program.
Our Summer I programs are run as intensive 10 week sessions.
New students will be placed in appropriate levels according to
their performance on a placement exam.
Classes meet Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 1 pm. In
addition to core courses (18 hours a week), students may register
for elective courses for an additional fee. Electives take place
Monday through Friday from 1:15 to 2:45 pm and Saturday from 9
am to 1 pm.
The Intensive English Program offers the following:
• Individualized attention
To attend class, prospective ELI students must complete all
necessary application documents provided on the Professional &
Public Programs website at ppp.utep.edu. Applicants who require
an I-20 Form must first provide the required application documents
to the ELI.
Registration is required in order to take placement exams.
Placement exams will be given Wednesday, May 27, at 9 am in
Miners Hall (unless otherwise noted). Orientation will take place
Thursday, May 28, at 9 am in Miners Hall.
Refund Policy: Applicants who cancel a registration will be issued
a refund, less a $75 processing fee, provided that notice of the
cancellation is received at the English Language Institute (ELI) prior
to the course start date. After the start date, no refunds will be
issued; however, transfers may be acceptable.

TOEFL Preparation (Paper-based Test)
Summer II 2015
This course is designed to prepare students for the TOEFL Paper
based test (PBT), which evaluates the English proficiency of English
language learners, who must pass the TOEFL to be admitted to
most American universities for either undergraduate or graduate
studies. This course will cover all knowledge and skills evaluated
by the TOEFL: listening comprehension, reading comprehension,
vocabulary, English language structure, and essay writing skills.
Test-taking strategies also will be discussed to help students make
the most of their time during the actual test.

ELI: Basic Intensive English Program
Continue building your confidence to express yourself in English.
The goal of this course is to improve your fluency and confidence
in speaking English. Speaking a second language is not easy, but
it can be achieved through enthusiasm, consistency and a lot of
practice. The course format emphasizes student presentations and
debate.

Linguists have found that people learn a second language more
easily in a relaxed atmosphere. We will put you at ease as you
learn to converse in English. This course is for those with some
basic English skills. You will learn how to make small talk, end a
conversation, order food in a restaurant, speak to coworkers in a
business setting and more. This course is a precursor to English
Conversation: Level II. No text is required.

English Conversation: Level II
English Book Club Summer II 2015
For those who want to continue sharpening their conversational
skills, this intermediate-to advanced-level course in English as
a Second Language expands on the activities begun in English
Conversation: Level I. The Level II session offers continued
development of speaking and listening skills for effective
communication in English by emphasizing the use of common
idioms, role-play and short debate to encourage conversation. No
text is required.

Pronunciation of American English
In this course, students will strengthen their listening, speaking
and pronunciation skills. The course emphasizes phonological rules
(much like grammar rules), in particular, phonetic environments,
stress, rhythm and inflection. Students will learn how to selfmonitor and improve their English pronunciation. This is a highly
interactive class.

Workshop: Focus Business English
Would you like to speak English with confidence? This course will
improve your conversational English skills, including pronunciation
and listening. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence in your
ability to speak English. The course focuses on vocabulary, student
presentations and discussions of current affairs.
This course is designed for high-advanced learners who need
to polish their English listening and speaking skills for use in
a business environment. The course emphasizes grammatical
accuracy as well as vernacular choices, genre-specific vocabulary
commonly known as “business speak” (associated with corporate
discussions), pronunciation drills for focused improvements, and
intonation practice to help students produce the speech patterns
of a native “business English” speaker. Class sessions will involve
detailed pronunciation work, as well as out-of-classroom tasks
to provide practical opportunities to rehearse the language
in context. NOTE: Active practice outside of the classroom is
required.
