CAN WE DO IT? YES, WE KENN:

THE PGS were one down before we
started the annual tussle with the
Northcliffe Golfing Society . . . and
it was so nearly four.
NGS President Vyvyan Harmsworth
was struck down with a virus just prior
to ‘kick-off ’, so his son Rupert also
dropped out.
But in the charitable spirit in which
this match is traditionally played, the
PGS ‘lent’ them one of its finest – Brian
Viner, who writes occasionally for the
Daily Mail.
You would have thought that was
enough drama for one trip . . . but oh
no, for Hayley Barlow, Laura Cork and
Philippa Kennedy ended up in Belgium
after turning left instead of right on to
the A16 at Calais.
“I’ll never trust Barlow again,” said
Kennedy. “I gave her one job –
n avigating – and that’s what
happened. I thought something was
up when I noticed all the road signs
were in Flemish.”
Luckily, they managed to do their
own Top Gear Special and get back
a day early to play the fabulous Belle
Dune course.
At the end of the first day of fourballs
at Les Pins in Hardelot, the teams were
neck and neck at four apiece. Nick

Buckley gamely volunteered to play the
one singles match and beat NGS
Captain Lisa Heywood.
On day two at Les Dunes, a badlyhungover Viner (unfortunately) did
better than expected and took Cork to
the 18th before losing gallantly.
It was the highlight of a day that saw
the PGS won 5-3 and 9-7 overall. As
always in Hardelot, the food was great
at Hotel du Parc and the ‘craic’ was
mighty and inevitably involved just a
few jokes about Belgian chocolates and
‘the muscles from Brussels’.
Thanks go to Director of Golf Ken
Strachan and Garth Burden for organising what was a brilliant two days
