14 JUNE 2015 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time The first reading and Gospel today speak of the tiny plant flourishing into a prominent tree in which birds can find comfort in the shadow of its branches. The tree is God’s reign, ushered in by Jesus Christ. In our second reading, Saint Paul urges us to remain confident of God’s love and to continue to live holy lives in our earthly bodies. It is rather difficult for us to visualize the concept of the kingdom of God, sometimes referred to as the reign of God. One of the images that Jesus uses is that of the mustard seed to help us begin to grasp the meaning of the kingdom. God’s reign begins as a tiny seed in the life of Jesus and grows towards its completion in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Our Parish Mission Statement We, the members of the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption community, believe that we have been called through Baptism to live the Good News of Jesus Christ under the patronage of Mary, our Mother. We accomplish this by proclaiming the Word, celebrating the Sacraments, and reaching out to others. PASTOR Most Rev. Jean-Louis Plouffe, D.D. Bishop of Sault Ste. Marie RECTOR Msgr. Those who wish to register for this meeting to have their child baptized are asked to call the parish office by Monday, June 22. Baptism Preparation is mandatory by Diocesan Policy. In this Gospel passage Jesus presents two images for the Kingdom of God. One is the seed which is scattered on the land. But the one who scattered the seed does nothing further to ensure growth; yet is grows. The second image is the mustard seed which is tiny but somehow it becomes the largest plant with room in its branches for the birds to find shade. The Kingdom of God is never what we might expect; it does not follow "the rules" that society may have. People who live by Kingdom values do not follow society's ways. We are to be countercultural as Jesus was: embracing the outcast, proclaiming God's love for all, offering healing and reconciliation. And always we are given the grace to act as his disciples. Catholic News Service - Vatican City Being Christian is humbly serving others, not applying "makeup" to your soul to make it prettier, Pope Francis said. "To be Christian is to do what Jesus did -- serve," he said in a homily during Mass in the chapel of his residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Thinking about oneself and being self-centered "is a sin, it's a habit we have to break," he said, according to Vatican Radio. Just ask for forgiveness and pray "that the Lord convert us," he added. "To be Christian isn't about appearances or social conduct, it isn't putting a bit of makeup on the soul so that it's a little more beautiful," he said. A Christian serves others and people should ask themselves, "Do I have others serve me, do I take advantage of others, the community, the parish, my family, my friends or do I serve, am I at the service" of others?" he said. Being a Christian is also about recognizing that one is part of an entire people on a journey with God, not an individual whose spirituality is concocted in an abstract or controlled environment, like a laboratory, he said. God has made his people "walk for centuries in order to reach" maturity, "the fullness of time," he said. "How many sinners, how many offenses" along this journey, this long history of sin and grace, he said. "Our history must take on saints and sinners. It is my personal history, everyone's, it must take on our sin."
