FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed quarterback Jake Heaps and fullback J.C.
Copeland, both of whom participated in rookie minicamp over the weekend as tryout players.
To make room on their 90-man roster Monday, the Jets released cornerback Greg Henderson and safety
Demarkus Perkins, undrafted free agents who were signed after the NFL draft.
Heaps joins Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms and Bryce Petty in the Jets' quarterback mix. He
played two seasons at BYU, transferred to Kansas for a year and then went to Miami. He was 6 for 12 for
51 yards in three games for the Hurricanes last season.
Copeland was signed by Dallas last year as an undrafted free agent out of LSU, but was cut before the
regular season.

You can never have enough quarterbacks, apparently.
The Jets now have five signal-callers on their 90-man roster after signing Jake Heaps on Monday following
his rookie minicamp tryout.
The Jets, who invited 24 players to try out over the weekend, also signed fullback J.C. Copeland. In
corresponding moves, they released undrafted free-agent cornerback Greg Henderson and free-agent
safety Demarkus Perkins.
Heaps joins Jets quarterbacks Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms and fourth-round pick Bryce
Petty.
Heaps had an impressive high school career, leading Skyline High School to three 4A Washington state
titles (2007-09). He bounced around during his college career, however, playing two seasons at BYU
before transferring to Kansas, where he played for former Jets offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. After
one season with the Jayhawks, he transferred to Miami in 2014, where he completed 6 of 12 passes for
51 yards in three appearances (no starts).
With the addition of Copeland, the Jets have two fullbacks on the roster; the other is Tommy Bohanon.
After signing with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent last year, the 5-11, 260-pound Copeland was
cut in August. He played four seasons at LSU, rushing for 92 yards on 36 carries. Copeland was recruited
by the Tigers as a defensive tackle but made the switch to fullback.

The Jets on Monday announced that they signed two of the 24 tryout players who participated in last
weekend's rookie minicamp.
Quarterback Jake Heaps and fullback and fullback J.C. Copeland were signed. To make room for them on
the roster, the Jets released two recently signed undrafted free agents: cornerback Greg Henderson
(Colorado) and safety Demarkus Perkins (Florida International).
Heaps played at BYU and Kansas before spending his final collegiate season at Miami. Coming out of high
school, he was the No. 1-ranked pro-style quarterback in his recruiting class, according to Rivals. Heaps
played in six games and threw 12 passes last year. On a whole, his college career was a huge
disappointment, considering his recruiting accolades.
Heaps joins Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms and fourth-round draft pick Bryce Petty in the Jets'
quarterback room.

Copeland played at LSU. Tommy Bohanon is the only other fullback on the Jets' roster. The Jets have
usually kept just one fullback on their final 53-man roster. While Heaps is fresh out of college, Copeland
played his final season at LSU in 2013. He signed with the Cowboys last season as an undrafted free agent,
but was cut in August.
The Jets typically sign one or two tryout players out of rookie minicamp. But Heaps and Copeland have a
long way to go before they make the team or even the practice squad, between the rest of spring workouts
and training camp. At this point, they are just additional bodies on the Jets' offseason roster, before the
team must start trimming in August, from 90 players on the roster to 75, and then eventually to 53.
But considering Jets coach Todd Bowles had said Saturday that it was "very possible" the Jets wouldn't
sign any rookie minicamp tryout players, consider this a small victory for Heaps and Copeland.
With the release of Henderson and Perkins, the Jets now have seven undrafted free agent rookies on their
roster, plus their six draft picks, along with another rookie quarterback, in Heaps.

Did Jets really get the most value out of the NFL Draft, among all teams? One study says yes (Darryl

We all know that grading an NFL team's draft right after it happens is a fool's errand, if you take such
grading seriously.
Still, after the Jets finished their 2015 draft earlier this month, we posted a couple "just for fun" lists of
grades — here and here.
Really, though, you need two to three years to properly and accurately grade a draft class. So in addition
to those 2015 grades, we also circled back and graded the Jets' 2012 draft.
But what if there was a way, for 2015 draft picks, to assess the relative value and efficiency of a team's
draft, beyond just arbitrary letter grades? Might we really be able to determine how well a team drafted,
compared to the NFL's other 31 organizations?
No immediate draft grading system is perfect, of course, but RotoViz conducted a neat exercise after the
draft. And it determined that the Jets got the most value out of this draft, among all NFL teams.
Following the Jets, in these ratings, were the Falcons, Bears, Jaguars and Vikings. The worst value grades
went to the Titans, Panthers and Eagles, with Philadelphia coming in last. (Or maybe Eagles coach Chip
Kelly just sees something the rest of us don't, as he scouts draft prospects.)
Here's essentially how RotoViz's analysis worked: The website used NFL.com's prospect scouting grades,
in combination with where players were actually picked, to determine whether a player was picked above
or below his expected slot.
Now, this doesn't factor the necessary filling of positional needs into a team's drafting acumen. And
naturally, teams' internal scouting of players isn't going to match up with NFL.com's ratings, even if teams
are operating on the "take the best player available, regardless of position" method. The draft — as if you
didn't know this already — is a subjective, unscientific process that is largely a crapshoot. It takes a lot of
luck.

Considering all those caveats, RotoViz rates the Jets as having milked the most value out of this draft —
largely because they picked defensive end Leonard Williams sixth overall and offensive guard Jarvis
Harrison in the fifth round. In short, the RotoViz analysis concluded that both players should've gone
higher, based on their scouting grades.
A lot of people were surprised Williams fell to the Jets at No. 6. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan
basically said Williams was a no-brainer pick, once the Jets saw he was available. Williams was widely
regarded as the most talented defensive player in this draft.
Harrison is a more interesting, less-heralded potential value pick. It's likely that he fell to Round 5 because
of concerns about his work ethic. By most accounts, he has the talent and physical attributes to play in
the NFL. But is he willing to put in the work required of a starting offensive lineman in this league?
When considering this question, Jets coach Todd Bowles offered a good summary of how teams weigh
these risks, while attempting to maximize their value in the draft.
"Some games, [Harrison] played harder than others, but you can probably pull out any college player going
into the pros that has done that at some point in time," Bowles said. "Jarvis is a big guy. He's not going to
go out and run 400 meters in 47, 48 seconds. Obviously, the better shape he's in, the better he can play.
He has a chance, for where we got him, to be a value pick. He has to show that he's more than that type
of [lazy] player. We thought it was worth the gamble to take on him."

The immediate reaction to Tom Brady's four-game suspension: Wow.
The secondary reaction: It helps the New York Jets, obviously, but not as much as you might think.
First of all, let's see how things shake out after the anticipated appeal. If Brady gets the suspension
reduced to, say, two games, it won't have a profound impact on the Jets and the rest of the AFC East. The
New England Patriots are good enough to overcome two games of Jimmy Garoppolo.
If the suspension stands at four games, well, yeah, that would affect the landscape of the division. But it
doesn't mean the folks at One Jets Drive should be popping champagne corks. That would be a case of
premature celebration because the Patriots are like vampires: They're not dead until they're dead. No
team, least of all one coming off a 4-12 season, should take anything for granted.
Unlike the Buffalo Bills, who face the Patriots in Week 2, the Jets still have to face Brady twice, barring
injury. Their first encounter will be the sixth game for both teams, Oct. 25 in Foxborough. Maybe Brady
will experience post-suspension rust, leveling the playing field, but don't mark it as a "W" just yet.
Remember: Brady is 20-7 lifetime against the Jets.
The best-case scenario for the Jets is a lousy start by the Patriots. Considering the Pats face the Pittsburgh
Steelers, Bills and Dallas Cowboys, with the latter two on the road, a 1-3 start is certainly possible. Then,
in Brady's return, they have another tough road game against the Indianapolis Colts. Ah, such DeflateGate
symmetry.

Maybe the Patriots will be 1-4 by the time they face the Jets.
But what about the Jets? Their schedule is no cakewalk, and they too could be sub-.500 for the first
encounter with the Belichicks. If that's the case, they will have blown the opportunity.
For years, the Jets have been talking about closing the gap on the Patriots -- mostly, it was Rex Ryan talking
-- and now Roger Goodell has provided them an opportunity.
But don't forget: The Bills and Miami Dolphins, both of whom have made improvements this offseason,
are thinking the same thing. They too have suffered for the past 15 years while waiting for their shot to
ambush the big bully in the schoolyard. The Jets don't get first dibs on redemption; they'll have to earn it.
The Jets began the offseason by swiping the Patriots' best defensive player, Darrelle Revis. Now they get
an assist from the league's PSI police, which benched the Patriots' best player ever.
But don't count the Patriots out. In 2010, the Steelers lost Ben Roethlisberger to a four-game suspension
at the start of the year, and they still finished 12-4 and reached the Super Bowl.
The Brady suspension is a nice stroke of luck for Todd Bowles and the rebuilt Jets, but if they're celebrating
like it's 2002 (their most recent division title), they'll end up like the quarterback's footballs.
Deflated.

The New York Jets' quarterback situation now resembles a burger franchise -- five guys.
On Monday, the Jets added another to the depth chart, signing undrafted free agent Jake Heaps. He
participated in last weekend's rookie minicamp as a non-roster player, showing enough to earn a contract.
So, if you're scoring at home, the Jets have Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms, fourth-round pick
Bryce Petty and Heaps, whose transient college career ended at Miami.
Why five?
Fitzpatrick still is recovering from a broken leg and probably won't be able to play in team drills at the OTA
practices, which begin next week. He's expected to be ready for training camp in late July. It's hard to
imagine the Jets taking five quarterbacks to camp, so this probably is a temporary situation. Obviously,
the most vulnerable holdover is Simms, who could lose his No. 3 job to Petty.
Heaps (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) didn't look out of place on the field with his fellow rookies. He flashed decent
arm strength, although he suffered some hiccups with his accuracy. He was a highly-recruited player out
of high school and signed with BYU, but he transferred to Kansas and later to Miami. In four seasons with
the Hurricanes, he posted 32 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He was a backup last year.
In other moves, the Jets signed fullback J.C. Copeland, formerly of LSU. He, too, was a non-roster player
at rookie camp. To make room on the roster, they waived cornerback Greg Henderson and safety
DeMarkus Perkins, both undrafted free agents.

Football Outsiders projects 6-10 Jets in 2015 (Rich CImini)

One sports-analytics expert isn't buying the hype on the New York Jets.
Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders, an ESPN contributor, has posted his projected AFC standings for 2015,
and he doesn't believe the Jets will be significantly better than last season. He predicts a 6-10 record, last
place in the AFC East.
You're probably thinking, "Who is this Schatz guy?" Well, last year at this time, he forecast a 6-10 mark
for the Jets. That, too, was met with considerable skepticism because the popular belief was the Jets
would build on their encouraging 8-8 finish in 2013 and contend for a playoff spot.
We all know what happened. They bottomed out at 4-12 and almost everybody got fired.
Once again, Schatz offers a caveat, saying: "When considering these numbers, remember that this is not
the final, official Football Outsiders forecast for 2015, and some of these projections will change between
now and the July publication of 'Football Outsiders Almanac 2015.'"
Evidently, Schatz -- or least his formula -- doesn't see the Jets, with all their offseason additions and
changes, making a run at the New England Patriots. Time will tell. So will Roger Goodell. If the
commissioner slams Tom Brady with a multiple-game suspension for his role in DeflateGate, it will have
an impact on the standings.
Here's how Schatz sees the AFC East (SOS is strength of schedule):
New England Patriots: 11-5 (10.6 mean wins, SOS: 25)
Miami Dolphins: 11-5 (10.6 mean wins; SOS: 22)
Buffalo Bills: 8-8 (8.2 mean wins; SOS: 19)
New York Jets: 6-10 (5.8 mean wins; SOS: 20)

Unrestricted free agency is just about over, and it appears the New York Jets will be crowned champions.
The champions of spending, that is.
The Jets have doled out a league-high $179.3 million in total contracts for unrestricted free agents,
according to ESPN's John Clayton, who has an interesting piece on the free agency trends that developed
in 2015. Trailing the Jets are the Jacksonville Jaguars ($174.5 million), Miami Dolphins ($137.2 million),
Philadelphia Eagles ($121.2 million) and Oakland Raiders ($110.8 million).
(On a side note, isn't it interesting that the Jaguars, Dolphins and Raiders have former Jets executives
working in their front office? We're talking about John Idzik, Mike Tannenbaum and Joey Clinkscales,
respectively. Idzik, though, is only a salary-cap consultant. Just saying.)

These contract numbers are misleading because, as we all know, the money isn't fully guaranteed. In fact,
the Jets' total for guaranteed money is $67.9 million -- still a rather large chunk of change.
No team wants to be crowned the champions of spending because, more often than not, it means there
were many holes in the roster, probably due to poor drafting. Such was the case with the Jets. They also
were mandated to spend a lot to stay in compliance with the league's minimum-spending rules. So,
believe it or not, the fiscally conservative Idzik would've been required to cut some big checks if he had
remained on the job. Mike Maccagnan walked into a dream situation -- except for an unsettled
quarterback situation.
Spending doesn't equate to winning, however. Six of the 12 teams that ranked in the top three in freeagent spending from 2011 to 2014 failed to improve their win total, including all three of last year’s top3 spending teams -- the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($147.3 million), Denver Broncos ($127.6 million) and New
York Giants ($110.6 million), per ESPN Stats & Information. Those three teams saw their win total decline.
How 'bout the champs? The New England Patriots finished 16th in free-agent spending. The more the
game changes, the more it stays the same. Success still hinges on drafting and developing talent.
As Clayton notes, unrestricted free agency ends Monday.
The signing period once ran through June 1, but it was shortened to May 12 to help players find jobs
before organized team activities and minicamps. Starting Tuesday, signings no longer count toward the
computation of compensatory picks. The remaining 138 unrestricted free agents will become "street" free
agents, and they don't factor into the compensatory formula -- so look for a bunch of signings Tuesday.
For instance, don't be surprised if former Jets safety Dawan Landry signs with the Buffalo Bills and reunites
with coach Rex Ryan.
Aside from Landry, the Jets' other unrestricted free agents are Michael Vick, Chris Johnson, Greg Salas,
John Conner and Jermaine Cunningham.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – In the matter of a just a few hours last December, New York Jets second year safety
Rontez Miles went from getting ready for his second NFL appearance to possibly losing his right leg to
amputation. Now fully healthy, Miles is back on the field again after a scare six months ago that almost
cost him a limb.
It was the middle of December and Miles was activated to the roster after spending a good chunk of the
season on the practice squad. The hard-hitting Miles, who played his college football at tiny California
(Pennsylvania) but has loads of potential, sustained an injury in practice that led to a diagnosis of
Compartment Syndrome. The hit he suffered that Thursday in practice caused the blood in Miles' leg to
stop moving, leading to some pain and discomfort.
It was a routine, overcast December morning and a normal practice for the Jets. Miles broke on a slant
route and a defensive back and a wide receiver simultaneously ran through his right leg while he was in
the air trying to make a play on the ball. He went down in a world of hurt but eventually got up, dusted it

off and finished practice. He didn't think anything of the pain, he said, he just wanted to get back to
practice.
He went through the full weightlifting session after practice. An under the radar player, someone on the
cusp of making the roster, Miles' statement to be on the two-deep would be enhanced with a start or two
at the end of the year. He wanted to play in this game.
In the locker room after, he even sported a brace on his leg and despite this he boldly said that he would
play that Sunday. Instead, John Mellody, the Jets' head athletic trainer, was rushing him to the hospital
upon a close look at the leg.
“If John Mellody hadn't taken me and I was looked at, who knows what could have happened. Could have
been devastating. Basically your leg can hold so much pressure and mine was beyond the limit. They had
to cut it open immediately,” Miles told Metro last week. He had surgery that same day. “That's one of the
possibilities, amputation. But the fact that John Mellody caught it – he said if he was wrong about what
he saw then good for me. But he didn't want to risk it.”
So Miles went in just a few hours from a game that he hoped would be a big moment in his career to
possibly losing his leg. He was on the active roster and looked like he might see some snaps not just on
special teams but also in the secondary, a big step in his career and development. Now he was wondering
if he might ever be healthy again and walk unassisted.
Not surprisingly, Miles ended up missing the rest of the season. On Friday, he was in the team's facility as
he has been much of the calendar year. He's working hard and looking forward to getting back to where
he was at last year, challenging for the two-deep.
“Way better. If I had sustained the injury early last season, I would have been back midseason. It just
happened that it was the last two to three weeks. I've been going since Phase 1. Really no limitations or
anything like that,” Miles said. “I did my rehab near Pittsburgh and it was great. Was good to be back for
a bit. Now I'm feeling good, it's not bothering me at all. I'm able to do do everything. Really excited to be
back.
“If it wasn't for John Mellody who knows what might be the case right now. Who knows, he might have
saved my career, you know? Maybe my leg too. You just don't know.”
