However, traditional insulin pumps are cumbersome, require tubing, and need to be disconnected during activities like sports, swimming, and bathing. Insulet Corporation was founded in July 2000 with the goal of finding a better option for diabetes patients, one that would make living with the disease easier. Insulet’s solution is the OmniPod Insulin Management System, a unique approach offering all the benefits of insulin pump therapy with fewer issues: no tubing, waterproof, and automated, virtually pain-free cannula insertion via a Pod and handheld personal diabetes manager (PDM) that communicate wirelessly. Battling for a Voice in a Competitive Marketplace Despite the strength of this innovation, Insulet operates in a marketplace rife with competition from other insulin pump providers. Both physicians and patients are increasingly challenged to find the time to gather new and credible information through traditional channels. Insulet needed a way to rise above the noise and raise awareness of the benefits of their differentiated product. This goal was especially important within the inperson setting, specifically in meetings between Insulet’s sales force and the physicians who recommend insulin pumps to diabetes patients. Within these in-person meetings, Insulet wanted to: • Immediately gain and retain attention from these doctors who were inundated with sales pitches 1 • Reach deeper levels of engagement and understanding for their solution • Gain real-time feedback during sales calls and test their assumptions about the effectiveness of their marketing assumptions. • Rapidly update the app to stay ahead of the competition. The natural solution was a mobile application that Insulet’s sales force could present through an iPad. After vetting several app-creation solutions, Insulet turned to The Marketing App Cloud from Proscape Technologies. Overcoming Time, Complexity, and Creative Restrictions The Insulet team knew from previous experience that the ability to create and update apps quickly, and remove the long turnaround times typically associated with coding, would be critical to the success of this project. Ramp-up time, costs, and revising content and approving materials were frequent challenges. The time required to create new apps ranges from weeks to months across most industries, with additional stretches to turn around changes to existing apps. The Insulet team wanted to be able to create an app and deploy it quickly, which is difficult when HTML coding is involved. Insulet Project Timeline for Two Apps The agency’s team members underwent training on The Marketing App Cloud platform during several days in December 2014. By early January 2015, they were fully educated and ready to build the two apps for Insulet. Release to Sales Team Apps Launched Signed Contract DECEMBER JANUARY JANUARY 17 2 In the course of the nine days between submitting their first Insulet app and publication, The Marketing App Cloud was able to accommodate 99 changes. Insulet found the end product to be impressive from a deeplevel functionality standpoint. In addition, they described the graphics in the app as spectacular, and were impressed that their agency was able to hit the high notes and deliver an app that that met the business needs in such a tight timeline. Based on the ease they experienced with The Marketing App Cloud, Insulet is now planning to bring a portion of app creation and management in house so that an idea they have in the morning can be deployed to the field quickly. Insulet expects that new resource to learn how to use the Proscape platform quickly, and is especially excited that the app will be in the hands of the creative team, and not a developer or software engineer. Deploying the New App to the Insulet Sales Team The rollout of the two new apps at the recent Insulet national sales meeting was much simpler and easier than they had expected based on other app deployments.
