Using Gmail for Faculty Email at Lehman

Using Gmail for Faculty Email at Lehman
This document explains how to set up a Gmail account to be used in place of your Lehman e-mail account. These
instructions are intended only for faculty, not student, accounts. As noted below, you'll need to also consult the separate
handout, "Forwarding your Lehman Email to your Gmail account (or other email account)".
Step 1. Create a Gmail account.
•
Go to www.gmail.com and click on Create an Account.
•
Enter the requested information.
If you follow the steps in this document correctly, your Gmail address will be invisible to others when using the
account to handle your Lehman e-mail. For the sake of simplicity, however, you might choose a login name
identical to that of your Lehman e-mail login. For example, if your address is
[email protected], you might consider [email protected].
•
Click on I accept. Create my account.
Step 2. Configure your Gmail account.
First, add your Lehman address to your Gmail account.
•
Click on Settings in the upper right-hand corner.
•
Click on Accounts.
•
Click on Add another email address you own.

•
In the Name field, enter your full name. In the Email address field, enter your Lehman email address.
Ignore the Specify a different “reply-to” address option.
•
Click Next Step, then Send Verification.
•
This will send a message to your Lehman e-mail account. (If the message does not arrive, double-check
that you have typed your Lehman address correctly above.) Open the message, and click on the link it
contains. Alternatively, you can return to your Gmail Settings (click on Settings, then Accounts) and
enter the confirmation code provided in the message.
Now, make your Lehman address the default.
•
Click make default next to your Lehman address in your Gmail Settings (click on Settings, then
Accounts).
Messages composed in your Gmail account will now appear to recipients to have originated in your Lehman
account.
Step 3. Test this configuration.
•
Click Compose Mail in your Gmail account. Your Lehman address should appear as the From address (if it
doesn't, return to Step 2 above).
•
In the To field, enter another e-mail address you might have. (If you have no other account besides your Lehman
account, enter your Lehman address).
Enter “Step 3” as the subject line, and send the message. You need not enter anything in the body.
•
•
Go to the To account and open this message. It should have arrived with your Lehman address as the From
address.
You now need to set up your Lehman e-mail account to forward messages to your Gmail account. See
the separate handout, “Forwarding your Lehman Email to your Gmail account (or other email
account)” for instructions.
A note about your Gmail inbox:
Gmail organizes your inbox differently than your Lehman e-mail account. By default, all messages with an identical subject
line will appear grouped together, under a single line. The number in parentheses indicates how many messages are found
in a given thread. This enables you to more easily follow an exchange on a particular topic.
