This session will describe a multi-year program to improve the accessibility of parks and recreation in Philadelphia. Community-based recreation opportunities are a vital part of the rehabilitation process for persons with disabilities. Addressing the need for improving the accessibility of Philadelphia’s parks and recreation centers, Global Abilities developed an accessibility assessment checklist, trained graduate students to conduct site visits. Collaborating partners included city government, nonprofit organizations, rehabilitation students, and park advisory groups. The teams then conducted site visits to twenty parks and recreation centers and drafted accessibility improvement recommendations.
