Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (Peach State LSAMP) University of Georgia’s 2015 Peach State LSAMP "Building Bridges" Summer Institute What is Peach State LSAMP: The Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (Peach State LSAMP) is a program funded by a National Science Foundation grant aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented minority students (African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders) who successfully complete baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Who Can Apply: Incoming first-year students at the University of Georgia who 1) identify as an underrepresented minority, 2) will pursue majors in STEM, and 3) will begin their studies in Fall 2015 are eligible to apply for the Peach State LSAMP “Building Bridges” Summer Institute. Program Description: The Peach State LSAMP "Building Bridges" Summer Institute is an intensive threeweek preparation program that provides students with the opportunity to attend mock STEM classes, become acclimated with UGA’s campus, participate in STEM-related field trips, conduct research lab tours with esteemed UGA faculty, become socially engaged with their program cohort, and attend informational workshops with various student-services departments at UGA. How To Apply: Complete the attached application. In order to receive full consideration for the Peach State LSAMP “Building Bridges” Summer Institute, applications must include the following—1) completed application form, 2) resume, 3) high school transcript, 4) essay, and 5) one letter of recommendation. Application Deadline: All materials are to be submitted via postal mail and must be received at the Peach State LSAMP office by Friday, May 29, 2015. Students will be notified of their acceptance status by Friday, June 5, 2015 at 5:00pm. Important Details: It is important that students schedule their UGA Orientation for any session immediately. The Office of Admissions will move those students who are selected for Summer Bridge to attend the Wednesday, July 8-Thursday, July 9, 2015 Summer Orientation session in order to coincide with our Summer Bridge schedule. The Peach State LSAMP "Building Bridges" Summer Institute will take place from Sunday, July 5, 2015 to Friday, July 24, 2015. Our Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, 2015 at 4:00pm and our Closing Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00am on Friday, July 24, 2015. All participants must attend both the Opening and Closing ceremonies. Family members are welcome at both ceremonies. Professional attire is expected at the Closing Ceremony. Additional Program Benefits: During the academic year, eligible Summer Bridge participants may become Peach State LSAMP scholars. Peach State LSAMP scholars attend monthly professional development workshops, have the opportunity to intern in research labs, may present their research at regional and national STEM conferences, and are provided academic and social support throughout their tenure as undergraduate students at UGA.
