Psychiatric Disorders often affect all life stages. Conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) and schizophrenia often begin during childhood and early adult years, and are then complicated by the effects
of comorbid medical illness, including losing the capacity to make medical decisions. Understanding the biology and
implications of treatment is essential to promote wellness in patients throughout their life span. There is some controversy around the use of psychotropic medications with children and adolescents afflicted with mental illness, specifically ADHD. Questions have arisen regarding how to diagnose and treat ADHD, and some researchers are even
questioning the very existence of this disorder from childhood through adulthood. The population of children under
state care, who are at high risk for psychiatric disorders requiring intensive and extensive intervention, has been of
increasing concern to the public and policy makers alike. Advances in assuring safe and effective care are not always
reaching the treating physician. These gaps in knowledge can be addressed by presenting projects that demonstrate
the effectiveness of programs to protect the safety of individual children.
Moreover, as the population ages, it has become imperative for health care providers to address and promote
intervention and preventive measures for well-being in all life stages. Many physicians are unaware of the major advances in documenting the developmental and biological basis of ADHD, a common disorder for which significant data is available. They also tend to be unaware of advances in predicting the course of schizophrenia, and psychosocial
therapies that can be employed in later life. Furthermore, evidence-based interventions demonstrate how to age successfully and how to use the concept of positive psychiatry in practice. The issue of end of life or palliative care represents a major concern for the public, and it is crucial that physicians become more educated in this area. To that
effect, in the current biennial renewal period which began on July 1, 2013, the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners
mandated a requirement for licensed physicians seeking renewal of their licenses to take 2 CME credits on End of Life
issues.
This conference activity will help bridge the learning gap related to the needed protections when prescribing
psychotropic medications in the treatment of children, the biological and clinical basis in the diagnosis and treatment
of ADHD, and end of life and promotion of successful aging using some psychiatric disorders as illustrations. We are
confident that the information provided during this conference will ultimately improve patient outcome and improve
the effectiveness of psychiatrists in communicating with patients and their families concerning assessment and treatment of psychiatric illness.
Educational Objectives:








Be familiar with the prescribing practices of psychopharmacology in children and adolescents and the psychotropic
prescribing policy for children in out-of-home care
Be able to provide framework for understanding the clinical presentation of ADHD symptoms, the biological bases of ADHD
and its treatment from childhood through young adulthood and the implications for advocacy
Understand issues in the assessment and management of capacity, intoxication, detoxification, and suicidal behavior, as well
as how to maximize effective communication with the general medical care team of medically ill adults with psychiatric disorders in the hospital
Learn similarities and differences between early-onset and late-onset schizophrenia, as well as recognize the predictors of
course and psychosocial therapies in later life
Recognize predictors of successful psychosocial aging in the community and in the mentally ill. Learn the neurocircuitry involved in wisdom and apply strategies to promote successful aging
Learn the concept of Positive Psychiatry
Be familiar with indications for palliative care and its application
Participate in a Q and A assessment to demonstrate understanding of these concepts
