Abducted in 2006 on the outskirts of Paris by a multiracial gang, Ilan Halimi was held for ransom under ghastly conditions for more than three weeks on the theory that since he was Jewish, he must be rich. Faithfully reenacting events from the view of various characters, the story tracks the massive but futile investigation doomed by near-misses and a failure to recognize the case as a hate crime. Meantime, a parallel drama unfolds as powerless loved ones have no choice but to put their trust in the hands of authorities, even as they are tormented by invective-laced phone calls from the captors. 24 Days raises troubling questions about the state of anti-Semitism and race relations in contemporary France. A 340-pound chef living with his mother, he’s been gamely diving into a sea of perpetual diet groups and fitness regimes, and belly flopping. He’s fired from a restaurant salad bar because of his “unpresentable” image; then his rigid weight-loss class dumps him because he keeps gaining pounds instead of shedding them. The relentless pursuit of slim is frustrating for him and for his three seriously overweight buddies in the working-class town of Ramle, Israel. But all that starts to change when Herzl discovers the one place where fat guys can be rock stars: the world of sumo wrestling. In this endearing and poignant comedy, co-directors Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor find both wit and soul in their four big guys’ efforts to master an ancient sport and accept themselves for the (large) people they are. With echoes of The Full Monty in both its blue-collar setting and its themes, A Matter of Size follows its own tender and funny (and Jewish) path from body shame to body celebration, and from loneliness to love. A snack reception will precede the screening. At the age of 18 – away from their houses, family and friends – these young individuals undergo a demanding journey, revealing the core of who they are and who they want to be. From the creators of the PBS-featured documentary Israel Inside: How a Small Nation Makes a Big Difference, this film illustrates how a group of young men and women are protecting not only their homes, but also the shared values of peace, equality, opportunity, democracy, religious tolerance and women’s rights. The lessons they learn along the way are lessons that can be adapted, understood and appreciated by everyone. In an effort to confront her family’s dark past, a punk-chick from California traces her father’s roots back to pre-war Berlin. Her journey takes her to Houston, Paris, Berlin, Prague and Theresientadt. During this voyage she discovers not only how she and her entire family were affected by Hitler’s Final Solution, but also that her family is larger than anyone imagined. She is finally able to leave a tribute to her family on the streets of Berlin and watch while her father is welcomed back to the city by the Mayor of Berlin. Told through the eyes of a second-generation Holocaust survivor, this amazing true account of one family in the big shadow of one of history’s most harrowing times, reveals the emotional impact that is handed down through generations. Shadi Mar’i gives an award-winning performance as Sanfur, a hot-headed Palestinian teenager who feels overshadowed by older brother Ibrahim (Hisham Suleiman), a militant local hero wanted for orchestrating suicide bombings in Israel. Conflicted and vulnerable, young Sanfur is exploited by Israel’s Shin Bet security service and fatherly intel agent Razi (Tsahi Halevy) who establishes a fragile bond with him. As an Israeli plot to assassinate Ibrahim heats up, and conflict erupts among Palestinian factions, loyalties are tested and pressure mounts, leading to a gut-wrenching climax. Shuttling back and forth between conflicting points of view, the film is a raw portrayal of characters torn apart by competing loyalties and impossible moral dilemmas, giving an unparalleled glimpse into the dark and fascinating world of human intelligence. Hermann notifies Fritz Bauer, the state public prosecutor in Frankfurt, who in turn contacts Mossad, Israel’s secret service agency. A carefully choreographed plot by intelligence agents leads to the spectacular capture of Hitler’s right-hand man in 1960. A hit song during the 1930s, “Gloomy Sunday” was notorious for allegedly driving people to suicide. Now it is the inspiration for this marvelous feature film – a love story with a twist. The film flashes back from the 1990s to the early 1930s in Budapest, where three people are caught in a love triangle. Lászlò, a successful Jewish restaurant owner, loves his gorgeous assistant, Ilona. She loves him and the young piantist András, who composes “Gloomy Sunday” for her. Their situation becomes increasingly perilous when a German restaurant patron returns to Budapest as a member of the SS. An earnest kid, he takes to heart his Rabbi’s requirement to help “heal the world.” Imagining himself a savior of sorts, he launches a grand plan to send baseballs to Cuba, a country with a mysterious pull. He knows only that Cubans are poor and love baseball – and that Cuba saved his grandpa’s life. On a hunch, his award-winning filmmaker parents pick up their camera. They know the U.S. embargo with Cuba – and the complications of growing up – will throw their son a curveball. Part travelogue and part coming-of-age story, Havana Curveball is a marvelously crafted tale that provides insights into the bizarre state of relations between the U.S. and Cuba as well as the idealism of youth. ★★★ TRIBECA FILM INSTITUTE CREATIVE PROMISE AWARD SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 8:15 PM STODDARD HALL AUDITORIUM, SMITH COLLEGE NORTHAMPTON Daring to ask questions about her true identity, around which her parents had kept a careful silence through her entire childhood, filmmaker Lacey Schwartz gently but firmly pulls back the curtain on matters of race and family secrets in her deeply personal and fascinating documentary. But her parents’ fraying marriage and her own nagging doubts compelled Schwartz to begin tugging at the threads of her identity. What these people did not expect was that their final destination, America, no longer welcomed them with open arms. Unlike their “refusenik” predecessors, those coming to the U.S. were now burdened with having to prove “reasonable fear of persecution,” a concept simply not understood by those born into maltreatment. Because of this, thousands had their applications for refugee status denied, leaving them in Italy – stateless. With the fall of Communism in 1989, a young generation of Jews began learning their longburied ancestry. The Return focuses on four women in their 20s who face the unique challenge of trying to create an identity in a vacuum, with little knowledge of their heritage. When Comedy Went to School answers this question with an entertaining portrait of this country’s greatest generation of comics – the generation that includes the likes of Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl and Jerry Stiller, all of whom make appearances in the film, telling jokes and telling their stories. The answer is also found in upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains, aka the Borscht Belt, where Jewish immigrants transformed lush farmland into the 20th century’s largest resort complex. Those Catskill hotels and bungalow colonies provided the setting for a remarkable group of young Jewish-American comedians to hone their craft and become worldwide legends. For two weeks each year, we bring the best of Jewish cinema (typically 20 films that screen in more than 10 different venues) to the Valley. Many films that are screened at the PVFF would not find distribution elsewhere in the region. The Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival (PVJFF) owes its success and longevity to the generous contributions of our loyal donors, sponsors and collaborative partners. And over the past two years, we are especially grateful to those who have donated to ensure the festival’s smooth transition to the JCC. Ticket sales cover only 10% of the cost of the festival, making sponsorship and other donations vital. Your support ensures that the PVJFF will thrive in the years to come. We invite you to partner with the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival and help us grow! Your tax-deductible contribution will help us sustain a world-class film festival that celebrates Jewish heritage, engages diverse audiences and builds bridges to understanding. Visit PVJFF.org to donate online or call the JCC at (413) 739-4715 to make a gift.
