Parkmill Teddy Challenge
Introduction
Hello and welcome to Girlguiding West Glamorgan’s Parkmill Teddy Challenge Badge. Thank
you for choosing to work towards this badge and helping us to fundraise towards the
refurbishment of our Guide Centre which we use for training, holidays, fun days and much
more! We all have lots of fun at Parkmill and hope you have fun working towards the badge.
How to use the pack
There are 3 sections to this badge:

Teddy Challenges

Wales Challenges

Starlight Challenges
Each section includes lots of fun things to do. To earn this badge you must complete
challenges from each section:

Rainbows – complete 4 challenges – at least 1 from each section

Brownies – complete 6 challenges – 2 from each section

Guides/Senior section & Adults – complete 8 challenges – at least 2 from
each section
At the end of the pack you will find resources to help you use the pack with your unit.
Please remember when completing your badge that not all challenges will be suitable for all
age groups and you may need to ‘tweak’ some of the activities to suit your individual girls.
Feel free to do this but remember to challenge them at the same time! Please also
remember that all activities should take place according to the policies in the Guiding
Manual so that members are safe while taking part.
Teddy Challenges
Everyone takes their teddy when they go away – try some of these
challenges about our bears.
1. Hold a teddy bears picnic
Why not make a bear mask or bear ears to wear using the template in the pack or a paper
plate and cake cases or use your own imagination!
Have teddy bear shaped sandwiches, pom bear crisps
animal biscuits and gummy
bears to eat!
2. Make a teddy bear out of pony beads or hama beads
3. Make a bean bag bear
4. Hold a famous bear evening
come dressed as Rupert the Bear, eat Paddingtons marmalade sandwiches, play sammies
sweet with jelly bears or even do adventurous activities in the style of Bear Grylls
5. Complete one or two of the bear puzzles at the end of
this pack
6. Make a teddy fridge magnet from fimo, funky foam or
similar
7. Hold a teddy games evening

Play corners using famous teddy bears to name the corners of the rooms

Play beetle, but make the shape of a teddy

Play teddy says (in place of ‘Simon’ says)

Hold a teddy hunt by hiding teddy shapes around your meeting place for the girls
to find
8. Take teddy on an adventure – take pictures of
everywhere he goes and make a scrapbook about his
travels
9. Learn some bear songs or make up a song or rap about a
bear
Wales Challenges
Parkmill is located on the beautiful Gower peninsula in South
Wales. These challenges all relate to the local customs and
traditions and to the beautiful beaches around.
1. Make Welsh cakes, Welsh rarebit or decorate biscuits
with a dragon, daffodil or another Welsh theme
2. Paint a pebble or make a collage out of shells
3. Make a sand picture
Members can colour sand using food colouring then stick it to a picture using PVA glue
in the same way you would with glitter to make a sand based collage.
4. Make a Welsh pin badge
5. Cut out the welsh word cards at the end of the pack and
challenge the girls to match the correct pairs.
6. Using scraps of material, coloured paper or plastic bags
decorate a doll or teddy in traditional Welsh costume or
make a Welsh peg doll.
7. Create a castle out of recycled and scrap materials.
8. Learn a traditional welsh song or ask someone to come to
your unit to teach you a traditional welsh dance
9. Make a dragon puppet using the ideas at the end of the
pack or using your own imagination!
Starlight Challenges
Parkmill Guide Centre is one of the places we can go to
enjoy an overnight stay so why not try some of the
challenges below relating to Parkmill, overnights and going
away.
1. Stay away for at least one night with your unit
2. Go on a night hike/walk with your unit
3. Play some games in the dark
4. Play kims game with things you might take for an
overnight stay
5. Design a postcard from your ideal holiday destination
6. Play Bingo with the areas of Parkmill using the Bingo
cards at the end of this pack
7. Find Parkmill on a map and plan your route from your
meeting place to Parkmill
8. Hold a pyjama party at your unit meeting – don’t forget
your teddy!
9. Play the wide game at the end of the pack, or create
your own with an overnight or Gower theme.

Teddy bear mask
Hama bead and Pony bead patterns
Cut one very long piece of wire. Fold your wire in half and loop it through the
hook. Start with the top row of beads... look at the pattern below as you add
your beads. Take the wire on the left side and string the beads onto the
wire. Lay the beads flat, then take the wire on the right and string them
through the beads as shown in the picture here to the left. Continue to do
this until your Teddy Bear is finished.
Bean Bag Bear
Materials Needed:

Sock (Any colour or size you like)

Dried Beans or Rice

Wool or elastic bands

Felt

Googly Eyes

Craft Glue

Scissors
Instructions:
Start out by filling the sock about 3/4 full of beans or rice. Cut a piece of wool or using an
elastic band tie the sock closed about 1" above the rice, leaving a little slack. Cut off any
extra sock. Divide filled sock almost in half. You will want the toe section of the sock to be
a little smaller as this will be the bean bag bear's head. Tie a piece of yarn tightly around
the sock or use another elastic band where it is divided so you make 2 distinct sections.
You can now use felt to cut out arms, legs, and ears. Glue these into place. Also glue on the
wiggle eyes. Use more felt or other craft supplies to add more details to your bean bag
bear craft.
How to play Sammies Sweet
Girls play in groups, and should have a small plate holding 10-15 sweets of different colours
(in this case gummy bears). One of the group leave the room and the others decide without
touching the sweets which sweet belongs to ‘Sammie’. The girl who left the room returns
and picks a sweet to eat – if it is ‘Sammie’s’ her turn is over, if not she continues to choose
and eat the sweets one at a time until she finds ‘Sammie’s sweet’!

Recipe for Welsh Cakes
You will need:
200g/8oz SR Flour
50g/2oz butter
50g/2oz lard
75g/3oz caste sugar
75g/3oz currants
¼ tsp mixed spice
1 egg
Pinch salt
Milk to mix
Method:
 Sift dry ingredients together
 Rub in fat and mix in dry fruit
 Add beaten egg and little milk to
make a soft dough.
 Roll onto a floured surface to 5mm
(1/4”) thick.
 Cut into rounds using a round cutter
 Cook on a lightly greased traditional
heavy, flat, iron pan (sometimes
called a griddle or girdle), or a good
solid heavy frying pan, with a flat
base, is fine, until golden brown
 Cool and sprinkle with caster sugar
 Serve alone or with butter
Welsh Pin badge
You will need small brass safety pins and seed beads. It is helpful, but not necessary, to
have a small pliers.
You will need 9 small safety pins (8 to hang down and 1 to go across the top). Open a safety
pin, and slip the seed beads onto it following the pattern below. Once all beads are in place,
close the safety pin. You may want to use the pliers to pinch the end of the safety pin so it
will not pop open later. Repeat this step until all the safety pins are beaded.
Now you are ready to put all the beaded pins onto the last safety pin. Open the safety pin
which doesnt have beads on. Use the pliers to slightly pry apart the coil at the end of the
pin.
Slip the loop of the first beaded safety pin onto the empty one. Pull it down to the loop at
the base of the empty pin. Pull it around the loop and up the back-side of the pin. Repeat
this for each beaded safety pin.
Once all your beaded safety pins are on your last pin, use the pliers and squeeze the loop to
close it. You can now pin your new safety pin jewellery onto your shirt, hat, shoelaces, etc.

Welsh Dragon Sock Puppet
You will need:
A red sock
Red craft foam
Scraps of red, yellow and orange craft foam
Red glitter glue
Fabric glue
Googly eyes
Fabric pen
Instructions:
Cut two wings and a tail from red craft foam. Decorate with the glitter glue.
Put the sock over your hand and mark where you want the eyes, wings and tail to go. Now lay
the sock flat and glue on the tail, wings and eyes.
While this is drying make your flames by cutting out a flame shape from yellow foam, a
slightly smaller one from orange foam and an even smaller one from yellow foam. Glue them
together in a pile.
Put on the sock puppet, using your thumb as the lower part of the mouth, and mark where
the flames will go.
Take off the puppet and glue on the flames.
Dragon stick puppet
You will need:
Red Coloured paper
Dragon template (below)
Glue
Small white circle stickers
Black pen
Lollipop sticks or garden canes
Instructions:
Print the template out onto card. Cut it out and use it to draw and cut out a head, mane, tail
and two legs from coloured paper.
Draw around your hand 5 times on coloured paper, or print handprints using poster paint and
cut out. Glue the handprints together and stick on the mane and the head. Add the tail and
two legs. Stick on the two stickers as eyes and with the black pen draw on the pupils,
nostrils and teeth. Fix 2 lollipop sticks or garden canes to the back of the puppet.
Parkmill Bingo
What you need to do:




Print a copy of the bingo card for each player.
Read the place options out and ask the players to write them in whichever box they
would like.
Then call out the places again in a random order, the players cross out the box with
the corresponding place.
You can give prizes for a line and/or a full house!

The Gower Trail Wide Game
Parkmill Guide Centre is located within the Gower Peninsular.
You are going to visit four of the beaches from the area. At the beaches (bases) you will
need to complete a task related to activities associated with the area. On completing the
tasks you will be given a part of a map which when complete will make up the Gower.
Your aim is to put the map together.
Base 1 - Pwll Du
Pwll Du was once a thriving Smugglers haunt.
Let the smugglers know that the coastguard have been tipped off and design a way to warn
them.
Light a candle - as a reward toast some marshmallows.
Play the game Smugglers or creep up on a leader without being seen.
Base 2 – Rhossili
Gower is regarded as one of the finest stretches of coastline which contains some of the
most beautiful beaches.
Complete some of the word searches /puzzles on beaches.
Base 3 – Penmaen
There are lots of walks in the Gower.
Make sure you are prepared, using bin liners and tape make a foul weather jacket.
Or do a simple compass course (eg 10 paces on 125°, 6 paces on 45° etc.)
Base 4 – Oxwich
Gower has a number of castles.
Cross the Moat (water) to the castle using only two pieces of paper to stand on.
Or make a sand castle.
Smugglers
Split the groups of children in this game into two teams-the "Ins" and the "Outs". You need
to have an even number to make it fair. If you have an odd number of players, take turns on
who will sit out and be the referee, or just play with an uneven team.
Decide who will have the "jewel" on the Outs team. The jewel can be a coin, stone, small
toy, or anything that can fit in the palm of your hand without being seen. No one on the Ins
team must know who has the jewel.
If you are on the Ins team - count to 50 while the team is in the spot designated as the
"Den."
If you are on the Outs team - move far away from the Ins group while they are counting.
When the Ins team have finished counting they should yell "Smugglers!" then run towards
the Outs team to tag them.
If you are on the Outs team and are tagged you should open your hand to show whether or
not you have the jewel. Teammates on the Outs team may secretly pass around the jewel as
often as they like to confuse those on the Ins team.
Change sides when the person with the jewel is tagged.
TIP: Every player on the Outs team should hold their hands in a fist as if they are carrying
the jewel to confuse the Ins team players.
