April, May June 2015 Volume 27, Issue 2 THE C OVEY C ALL Quail Hollow State Park Volunteer Association From the President By Rich Keslar By the time this issue is published, the Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event will be done for this year. Thanks to Paula for all of the work for this event and to those who helped. Our next event is the Arts, Craft, & Herb Fair on May 2nd and 3rd. We need help staffing this event including the gift shop. Contact Shelly Quinn or Rich Keslar to help out. If interested in helping, please contact Connie Michaels for the Nature Center and Visitor Center scheduling. Contact Rich Keslar for the gift shop scheduling. See additional articles in this issue about speakers at our monthly meetings. And the help we need for being able to offer Christmas at the Hollow this year. www.quailhollowpark.net INSIDE THIS ISSUE Cross Country Skiing Schedule of Events 2 3 Fran Kitchen CATH 2015 volunteers needed 4 5 Garden Weeding Helpers Wanted We are looking for anyone interested in adopting a garden section around the Manor House to keep the weeds under control. Weeds would have to be removed by pulling or digging them out. Weed killer can only be applied by ODNR ‘certified’ staff. With the rock garden and manor house gardens, there is not enough staff to keep up with this maintenance. The volunteer association is interested in this project because of the events we host such as monthly house tours and the many weddings held inside and outside the Manor House. We are asking for volunteers to "adopt" an area and be responsible for that area for the summer season. Please contact Gary Miller at 330-877-3965 or Rich Keslar at 330-877-1166 for more information. Page 2 The Covey Call Cross Country Skiing We have had a good cross country ski season thanks to Stark Park’s Skiing Basics classes and Mother Nature. Stark Parks held seven training classes on Saturday mornings in January and February. It was a first time visit to Quail Hollow for many of the people attending the classes. There were over 400 visitors to the park during weekends in January, February, and March making use of our ski shop. Kara Musser and Dave Puterbaugh hosted and organized the Skiing Basic classes at Quail Hollow. Kara is Stark Park’s Education Programmer and Dave is their volunteer instructor. Dave has many years of experience doing cross country skiing having operated his own cross country ski rental business at one of the Alliance golf courses. Go to following website for fantastic pictures of the ski enthusiasts and Quail Hollow in action. http://bit.ly/1H0W06x Thank you to Stark Parks’ staff Kara, Nick, and Dave and to Quail Hollow Volunteers Janet, Phyllis, and Julie for spending their weekends at the park. They all spent many hours on Saturday and Sunday serving our visitors. And a thank you to ODNR staff, Jerry and others, for trying to keep up with plowing the roads and parking lots.
